I dont think showing a split screen with you walking really shows us ANYTHING, You should do a side by side comparison of one WITH the steadicam and one with OUT.
Immediately after I built mine I realized that the side handle did exactly the same thing you mentioned. I took the side handle off and it's much steadier now. I hold the whole thing with one hand.
we made one, it cost about $15 and works great, its all about how you use it, you gotta PRACTICE... you know the thing about the arms making it turn, its like a little league pitcher saying his curve ball didnt break, YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE over and over to master it, OR ANYTHING, Liked the review, but dont write this little guy off, IMO it can add a lot to amature videos for not much cash, if you take the time to learn how it works best in your hands. Keep up the good work!
i believe there is one improvement that could be made to this. The shot could be even more stable if the base were the camera sits was attached to a "ball joint". The image would be more stable.
One trick, if you have an HD camcorder, is to shoot further away than you normally would. This way when you process your Steadycam footage with Smoothcam in FCP, you can stabilize it down and still get the proper shot with room to crop to 720p to post on Vimeo or burn to DVD. $14 plus some overnight Smoothcam analysis vs. $3,000 for a Steadicam with an Arm and Vest - it's a good deal for those of us who are on a budget :)
It's an amazing device for $14. I love mine - fits in a travel shaving bag! I have a cheap quickmount release from eBay on top so I can switch it to my tripod in seconds. Obviously it's not going to compare to something like a Steadycam Merlin, but if you learn some tricks on how to hold it and combine it with the Smoothcam filter in Final Cut Pro, you can get some really amazing results.
Mine works pretty well. It takes some practice. Don't expect professional results. I get much nicer footage with my mini-DV camera than I can holding it with the built in grip. The small DV Camera I have shoots a great picture on a tripod, but I just can't hold it still handheld. The $14 tripod helps a lot. I am pleased. With my cheap bike grips, I've only got $19 into it.
for the top 10" pipe...buy a 5" nipple close. thats what i did and it works even with out the weight. also try attaching a tripod head instead of the piece of wood. one other thing...practice makes perfect.
Um... the murder video was supposed to be funny? I dunno, I thought that bit was really good. I didn't laugh. I'd describe it as interesting/creepy... not "hilarious".
truly amazing video, i can imagine the work that must have gone into this, ,many hours, thank you sanity source for letting my eyes view such precious material. Im going to subscribe cuz this guy has great vids, ( like the rest of you ppl should ) :P
Fun to make but not very effective. I've had much more success using a Cam Caddie it was only $38 and it's very effective keeping my shots smooth.

Can't this effect be achieved by attaching a counterweight to a closed tripod?

the whole rig inst that great. im trying to find a cheap gimbal. or make one.
SanitySource 3 years ago
Use a toilet plunger head as a gimbal. Its soft and rubbery and can absorb / tilt similar to a gimbal.

Thanks for the review. The short murder video was hilarious by the way. Was the narration made up after the footage was shot?
