So many bullshit rock musicians. From the 60s and 70s. Caring more about making political statements and impressing stupid hippie psychies than music. Every "great" rock musician always throws these lazy excuses, saying music theory will narrow your creativity. Bullshit. Jaco Pastorious is proof that not only is the above statement, made by lazy, attention whorish "rock stars" is bullshit, but down to earth, real music theory can broaden your creativity in so many different ways.
Jaco's face at 7:10 reminds me of Sheldon (The big bang theory)! I almost hear a voice from his head saying "Well, yes indeed. What can I do? I am an evolved superior musician beyond human understanding"
he looks like, if robben ford had a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, the angel would be the eighties robben ford with the massive lappelle's and the shiny shirt and the devil would be jaco in this jumper.
Yeh, Jaco often gives an intelligent answer to a stupid question.
You can see him frown as he tries to make something of the inarticulate crap he just heard. His efforts were worth it, as this interview is the single best bass guitar lesson anyone could find.
im a guitar player.... and in my practicing.... dont much put the jaco in it..... but then there is the spirit of jaco putting it in there a real way.... if it makes any sense.... listen to billy davis

He is an amazing bassist theres no doubt. But i wouldnt consider him the best as he couldnt do slap bass.Slap is a very challenging technique.See Marcus Millers version of Teen town!!
Just cause he didn't do slap isn't a reason to not consider him one of the best and i want to put emphasis on ONE OF THE BEST. I honestly don't think that musicians should be considered better than another because each musician has developed their own style and they have strengths in certain styles and weaknesses in other styles.
But Marcus Miller didn't write Teen Town. ;) Just remember bassplaying isn't a competition. You have your own favorites, others have different ones. Just enjoy it.
yep! he was great!!!! but Steve Bailey or Victor Wooten isn't bad either!!! how the hell anybody can't learn those things anything!!!? cause I can't =(
Jaco was amazing. He is the best bassist of all time.. period!! I mean he was such a creative bass player. He always tried to develop new ways of playing and that's why he's my favourite.
Jaco var helt otrolig, han är den bästa basisten genom tiderna.. inget snack!!Han försökte alltid utveckla nya spelstilar. Så det är därför han är min favorit.
well it's musciality that most bassists lack and i guess that in my opinion it's the one thing that parts the good from the best. so wooten isn't very high up on my list. I'd rather listen to reggie hamilton, stu hamm, jeff beck, marcus miller and mark king... but wooten is GOOD. Not arguing. He's not THAT good in my book. cheers
Does anyone know how long before he died this video was made?
Cheers

A good thing about Jaco is he makes scales which seem tedious fun to play
DudeLove1996 2 years ago 4
Sorry, A good thing about Jaco was that he made scales which seemed like a practice, fun to play and musical.

Of course he's one of the best but hes not an all rounder.

Who is an all rounder? I've never really heard someone who is great with all styles of music and perfect with all techniques that are possible.

What Jaco knew in terms of harmonics and the fretboard makes him truly incredible, he knew the bass BETTER than the back of his hand.
Its all subjective tho, I find slap playing nasty, it just sounds ugly and gratuitous IMO.
Jaco is far from my favorite bass player, but you cannot deny his awesome tallent, same with Miller, Wooten & Clarke.
My favorite bass players are John Paul Jones and James Jamerson. . .
In the words of James Jamerson:
"If you don't feel it, don't play it"
