I love the Carpenters, and I love to watch Richard play piano, and I love to watch Karen perform in front of the camera, but this special reminded me of the Star Wars Holiday Special, and not in a good way... Still, thanks for uploading it!
Thanks again for posting this, I never knew it existed. Karen did good with the stage routines, especially considering it wasn't her forte. I would've liked to hear her sing an album of standards, a la Andy Williams. She'd been great.
Richard knew to stay away from Disco. That would have tarnished their image of the serious jazz musicians they really were. The 1st official world contact song,an ingenius idea.
A friend took my car for the day, and this Cd was in the player, he started the car and this song came on and he couldn't figure out what the hell was going on...this was only like 4 mos. ago...The D.J. thing fooled him for a minute...
Was never sure about "Calling Occupants." Even as a kid, I thought that aliens and whatnot was an odd topic for a song--especially by the Carpenters! Give me those melancholy love songs, anyday!
And I LOVE the voice over announcer reminding us that Love Boat and Fantasy Island were on tomorrow night and that coming up next was an Olivia Newton John Special! Am sure I called dibs on the TV over my siblings THAT night! :)
Actually, her autopsy report says she died of emetine cardiotoxicity, implying that she swallowed ipecac syrup to induce vomiting in order to maintain the weight she gained following therapy with Dr. Levenkron. Does not sound like recovery to me --- more like switching from anorexia to bulimia.
It is believed she died as a result of the anorexia from a weakened heart. When her weight re-stabilised, the additional strain on her already weak heart meant she passed away from cardiac arrythmia (or an irregular heartbeat). The horrible thing is she was well on the road to recovery, but her body couldn't cope. What a loss.
Not true. She had gained weight up to 108 (normal for her 5'4" frame)after a year of therapy in NYC. She died due to all the abuse that occured prior to being cured.
Who the hell do you think you are? I don't care if I get reported for this but go to hell. That poor soul died from a mental disorder due to people like you. Anorexia is not joking matter, it would be like making fun of a kid with leukemia or an old woman with cancer. YOU AREN'T FUNNY! Plus you have a bad taste in comedy.

Wow - they were so talented. But - tv variety was sub-par. This is embarrassing seeing their talent diluted. Its like a bad saturday night live skit

Karen was a natural in front of the camera. Her movements and delivery of lines looking spontaneous. She would have been a great tv star.

What, you are joking about weight watchers right?

I doubt it. We all want to be thin.

Yeah, but she had anorexia... She weighed 70 lbs I think when she died.
