In Canada, that's free and this system works. We pay more taxes, but when we go to doctor, that's free. If we need a operation, we don't have to pay thousands dollars, that's free. And government pays doctors with money of taxes. That's a very good system and this is one of the resons because life epectancy is better in Canada than in US. With this system, all people have fully access to health care, richs and poors.

It's not stupid at all because the poor/broke can still have access to the health care system and they do not have to go even lower into dept like most people in the U.S. So yes, it is nice to live in a country where the government cares about their peoples health to not make it into a cash cow business.
