Hey Colin, Just a little tip on cutting with knife, hatchet or chisel. Take a pencil and draw out the shape on your wood you want to end up with before you cut. That will give you a reference point or guide to go by.We have an old saying in carpentry,,,,measure and mark twice and cut once. Hope this helps. Cheers, Bill
Good job, you are working on the details you want. The way this is progressing it looks like you have given the project alot of thought. Look how far it has come already. I missed the uprights being done don't know, watch all the emails about new videos ???. Errors are how we learn and expand our knowledge. At 10X you sounded like a chipmunk knawing on a piece of wood when you were using the hatchet.
- any way glad to see that you've advanced past folding/hand saws, - olchevyman is right, keep an eye out for old drawknives or spokeshaves tho I've had good luck with using plate glass shards and welding gloves, and even pieces broken out of old porcelain sinks and thrones. -just a thought, check out sawbucks @ wikipedia, once
you've cut up a cord or 2held in place by the saw buck, you'll look for ways to create a substitute in the out doors good luck Big Al
good job - I'm looking at a buck saw with a center brace that my granther replaced,it looks as tho he found a rough cut piece 1'' by *'' that had knots with centers at approximately 23''
The plank was cut down to just under 25'', then the ends were center notched down freeing the knots creating near perfect ' U 's the wood around the former knot holes is harder denser and had some natural pitch in it acting as glue at low temps and lube at hi temps
Very nice.....Wood working takes time, on something like that you would be better off using a drawknife, Im sure you could find some old ones around for not much....Very good job for a hatchet
Hi Colin, Found the high speed part very funny, don't u think ? Sorry you cut too far, is that pinewood, because pine has that behaviour (splitting to far)
Great stuff, really enjoyed that, I love the mega fast chipping! Just an idea to get that curve without it splitting down and taking off the tenon shoulders is to jigsaw the basic shape you want then finish the sculpting of it with a knife.
@Slash28ACR Thank you very much Flash, I like the idea of the jigsaw but really wanted to try it with hand tools. I guess I need to be more patient next time and take my time and more care over the project :-)
think you can save that horizontal piece Colin. Round off the sharp edges. Put one of the verticals on one end. Coat the horizontal from the shoulder towards the center with glue. Now take some paracord and wrap from the shoulder towards the center. Now do the same on the other side. The extra width added by the paracord will prevent the verticals from shifting along the horizontal bar and add support. Even if you have already made a replacement...It may just be worth trying.
@RDPproject Thanks Rob, yeah I had been experimenting using jute twine, seems to work good, I think I need to shave it down a bit before I put it on though. Good to hear from you my friend, hope you are doing well.
ray mears would be proud! hell i'm proud! practice is a bitch, but we keep trying. i love the fact that you showed your f*ck up it made me enjoy this vid all that much more!
Great vid Col, the high speed editing works a treat!, so sorry that it didnt end up the way u wanted, trial and error my friend, but the solution you have come with sounds like a pure winner! Glad to see the Husky is doing its job very well pls keep making these quality vids, i learn smthing with every one, best wishes and take care my dear friend
@TheDishD Thank you very much Dishy :-) Yeah I was really disappointed with how it turned out, in too much for a rush to get it done and make the video I think. Lesson learn. Thanks for all you great support my friend, ps you need to teach me your dance moves :-)
@ColinOutdoors No prob's Col and il teach u my dance moves, if afterwards, u play the part of Godzilla for me, i have a blade i want to test...;p Jokes bro, and you'll keep m'lad you'll keep haha take care brother. =]
Good try, Col. What will version 4 look like? Looks like the snow has melted some in your neighborhood. We just got a new dump this morning, but it turned to rain, and is not a factor on the roads anyway. You're like a kid in a candy store with that high speed effect.
@sabr686 Thanks Sabr, need to rethink the design before I try again. Yeah all the snow has gone, hopefully no more this winter. Lol yeah I am loving the high speed, what do you think of it? Any good?
When you make an over cut on a shoulder like that a fix you can is to insert a wooden peg to replace the shoulder. That is quicker than a total do over. You may want to cut down on the caffiene before you start a wood working project. You were really amped up there. You were moving so fast it's a wonder the wood didn't spontaneously combust from the friction. :-D Good video mate,
@ColinOutdoors You're very welcome and you take care as well. Great videos Colin. I'm planning a bushcraft weekend in the Fall of 2011 for all of us youtubers that can make it to have a Bushcrafters Jamboree in the Hoosier National Forest here in southern Indiana. I want to invite local Boy Scout troops to visit and be taught some bits of the bushcraft we all love to share so much. God willing you can attend. More on this later.
@hoosierarcher Thank you very much for the kind offer my friend. I doubt I would be able to afford coming over but it sounds like a great weekend you have planned. I wish you all the best my friend :-)
