Summit access is forbidden when Semeru's activity is too intense. On the summit it's foolish to approach the crater itself and it's advisable to stay out of the area strewn with rocks (these are bombs). It's important for the wind to be in the right direction (that is, not bringing the ash, gas and projectiles in your direction) but generally in early morning this tends to be the case. In the vid the eruption appears closer than it is in reality: an effect due to the sheer size of the flow.
thanks, l will go end of this week and will hike to to top of semeru, camping 4 days. Cold during the day? How can you know where to camp, as u might wake up in the morning and the wind is is coming straight at you from the volcano. Thanks again. Oman
I was up there in July and it was freezing waiting for the sunrise. Daytime temperatures are pleasant. There are 2 camping areas: Jambagan (in a meadow next to a wooden hut) or higher up in the forest just below the tree line (Acropodo). Acropodo is better because it's closer to the summit. This is important because the ascent of the ash cone is demanding. Both campsites are sheltered from eruptions although a night at the top would be exciting (you would need very warm mountain gear).
your advice is great man, thanx heaps. Really looking forward to it, but will stay away from the tourists as much as possible! Have to feel like lm there alone! l heard there were pine forests, lakes and even rainforest, seems like quite a diverse area. Hope 3-4 days is enough to explore all areas. Will post a slideshow of the photos here on you tube when l get back under the name 'the devils pit' just thought of that now! haha. later
We were alone at the camping area and at the summit and during the climb. It's not like sunrise over Bromo! Acropodo seemed to be the only suitable place to camp before the summit climb since nowhere else seemed to be flat (ravines , steep slopes)but if you rummage around you may find simewhere else. Acropodo is just off the path going to the summit which is good when you start before sunrise. Apart from that there are lots of good off the track places to camp on the way to the cone.
This video remind me when I was there peak of Mt.Semeru (Mahameru) on 1997..
First eruption at 6.30 am.that was awsome...thanks
