Beautiful Kestrel! I'm a General falconer. Been flying solely Red-Tails, but I'll be trapping me an American Kessie, Lord willing. Going to try and get it on sparrows and starlings.
How many hours a day do you need to train and man kestrels? I want to start falconry but I have school taking 6 hours of every day except weekends (Im 13).
Kestrels are SO small the backpack is a pain to "install" plus I find it slows the bird down. The way I do it I have found it is VERY light and easy to use remove and replace....
I notice she is flying with a neck mounted transmitter. I flew a couple of kestrels with transmitters mounted with #10 rubber bands and the birds always seemed to go crazy when it was first put it on. Do you ever see anything like that or is it me?
Man alive your a good falconer.... It would be really neat if you could do a video with some tips or sumthin for the less experienced falconers... I could really use some pointers
I don't see any jesses in this video. Do you take them off for hunting her for some reason?
Or did I miss them?
Even if she didn't catch anything spectacular it's a nice vid!
I would if I could, but I live about 9 miles west of the GWB on the Jersey side. There's plenty of places to hunt around, but I live 'just' a little too far from most of the good ones for convenience. The parks close and large enough are too often too crowded and after that its mostly graveyards and golf courses!
I'm also interested in becoming a member of the falconry community. I'd like to own a kestrel. I'm 21 living in north central pa. Do you know how I can go about doing this?
Starlings, House sparrows, mice/rats/gophers, grasshoppers, dragonflies. She has caught frogs, lizards and even a snake. There is a few ducks on that farm and mice go into the duck shed to steal food. She got a bite on her foot from a huge gopher and has not gone for any gophers or rats since. She will still jump on a mouse.
whats the name of the music???

Can you still effectivly hunt kestrels on regular fields without tall grass?
TheKeiraner 2 years ago
@TheKeiraner
If there is something to hunt in the field you can hunt it. The prey usually hides in patches of tall grass or bushes.

Great vid! I'm an apprentice falconer, and noticed that your transmitter is on her keel... any reason this is better than a backpack mount?

I use seamless hair ties (no metal). Works great and they preen it right into their feathers.

Jesses are removed for hunting. I don't take the chance of them getting caught somewhere.

Check with your state hawking club. IF you are in California the California Hawking Club has a great website with plenty of info.
