  • no one can imitated maynard ferguson

  • Why wasnt Scott playin this?

  • @HEROxSabre no shit man. Scooters version is wayyyyy better than this one.

  • @cadillacdude1975 I was wonderin 'cause Scooter is in the band...and he sounds SO much better!

  • And anyone who thinks MF is the end all be all needs to take a listen to Cat Anderson

  • I have spent time with Bobby and he is anything but stuck up. Maybe you just didn't warrant his time. That happens to players who think their pooh don't stink, Maybe that fits you to a tee? As your name suggests TooGoodForYou13

  • Bobby Shew is one of the greatest teachers of the instrument in its history. The list of students he has helped is a who's who of great players. Bobby also has emphasima and used to have to carry around oxygen. I guarantee most of the criticism is by some marching band player in po-dunk Indiana who is the best player in a town of 352. The fact that anyone has anything bad to say speaks to the ignorance they own.

  • Okay guys, obviously bobby was having a hard time with this piece but like everybody keeps saying this piece can be done perfect in a studio. And considering that this piece was written for one guy-Maynard-I think he did a hell of a job on the interpretation, he took a piece of paper with a bunch of high notes on it and made music out of it. This piece was never lyrical in any way and what he did by lowering some of the solo parts and rubato tempo was make it into a piece of music.

  • way to much hating going on in these comments... This is live y'all, what are you looking for? Great playing all around, bravo Bobby Shew and the band!

  • Bobby is really a marvelous player, and has "attempted" this tune "in-person" numerous times...balls for trying as I don't know many whou could. The Arturo version is "perfect" b/c it was done IN THE STUDIO. You can make a player like Herb Alpert sound good with "studio magic." In the studio you can stop and rest whenever you want and all mistakes are taken out. Bobby did this LIVE with no editing.

  • @chasefreak i wouldn't call the arturo version "perfect", which sucks bc he was in the studio... I thought scotty did it better live at UNT.

  • hang on dont lets get too critical here bobby is great but remember maynard was the boss no doubt

  • Bobby is one of the great ones. But this is a train wreck. I doubt he'd want to be remembered for it.

  • not bad for a guy with emphysema. Bobby Shew is one of the best musicians you could ever be in the same room with and an all around cool cat. God bless you Bobby

  • Yea I have to agree with people about butchering. I usually like Bobby Shew, but this is definately not his best performance. The band sounds either really unrehearsed or very stiff...

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about the band was great the lead player i didn't watch all of that but he sounded great and the band was good, and bobby stumbled a little but look at how old he is and how clean and accurate and big his sound is.

  • wow. band fail..... shew doesn't know what the hell is going because the band is all over the place. ouch.

  • it sounds like he didnt even look at the piece till the concert. yikes

  • @marchnfever1 who the hell are you to criticize this master? Man people say some stupid shit on the internets!!

  • i just saw Bobby live a few few days ago and even attended his trumpet lecture. Mr. Shew you are phenomenal!

  • ouch, FAIL... i love bobby, but the entire band butchered this song including him

  • that was rough

  • Comment removed

  • todos son unos picados que no saben ni mierda

  • Maybe you can. But then, why aren't you sitting there playing it, instead of trolling on YouTube?

  • because this piece is not published. otherwise, you can bet I'd put my version of this up here with one of the three big bands I play lead trumpet in.

  • anybody wondering why they let Bobby Shew take a dump all over this classic when Engelbright sitting in the trumpet "SECTION" GODDAMN. Check out his version on here.

  • take a dump? shows what little appreciation you have for EVERYONE's talents.

  • this sounds pretty bad. I couldnt do better but shew defineently could. Scooter however owns us all.

  • From this same session you can here Englebright crap all over "Danny Boy". This is one heck of a hard chart and there are not many people EVER that could do it justice like the Boss.

  • Its very difficult on the trumpet he plays to roar and put air through it.

  • The arrangement is dif. and not as good as the original, but they are all still good, bobby is awsome, my teacher has his horn, and mine is similar to it.

  • Bobby is a great trompetisa, I admire a lot.

But Maynard Ferguson is undoubtedly incomparable.

  • I have no idea why anyone would want to argue about who plays/played this tune better/best. The problem is the tune, not the players. It's a stupid tune , nothing is memorable about it , boring melody , predictable arrangement , corny and nothing innovative about it , merely meant to show off Maynards upper register in his early years.

MF was very smart to drop this dog from his repertoire and I hope I never hear anyone ever play it again. I can't stand it.

  • You are exactly right.

  • Admitedly, this piece is insanely difficult. But of the three videos of this tune on You Tube, Bobby shew is a distant third behind Scooter and maynard. Maybe a faster tempo would have helped him get through this. He's shooting up and trying to get a lot of these high notes when the others just slam them out.

  • Two trumpet players should not be compared based on the merits of one live performance each. Two trumpet players should certainly not be compared on a live performance to a recording. Who knows how many takes it took them to get it "just right"? Ludicrous.

  • I disagree.

  • you're crazy man, maynard's tone suffered when he was old but if you say that i have to respectfully doubt that you have heard his original studio version of this tune. Maynard is so well regarded because he was the most musical in the upper register and had the fattest, roundest tone out of anyone

  • Bobby did a great job! Any trumpet player who takes on a Maynard Ferguson chart has a lot of guts. There are no "Wimps" out there who can play a chart like this.

  • could anyone tel me the name of this song please

i have arturo sandoval version absolutely perfect

  • The name of the song is "Maynard Ferguson"

  • The name of the chart is Maynard Ferguson's "Stratospheric". No one played it like Maynard did in 1953. Big, fat, amazing sound. Maynard was like no one.

  • I have an album with Bobby Shew playing this tune. Absolutely nailing it. Bobby has a bit more verve to his sound, a bit brighter than MF's sound. Different but equally good.

The guy is an animal. This video does Bobby no justice. if you are a trumpeter and interested you should do some more research on this guy, he is one of the best trumpeters of our time.

  • We should put this into perspective. This was written for Maynard. It is probably one of the hardest solo trumpet charts to cover but yet Maynard used to do it all the time through many sets in his shows. Even someone like Bobby struggled through it. He is not a hacker by any means. A monster player in his own right!! RIP Maynard!

  • Talk about Shew having a bad day. I still like him, but it definitely wasn't his best performance. The beginning even threw the whole band off! Bobby Shew is still awesome and I admire the courage it took to try to play something that hard in front of all those people

  • I think the camera is skipping, cause it happens a couple more times in the video.

  • people lay off him his bad day is better than your good day!

  • alright now. whos playing this? and who isnt? shut the hell up. you realize how difficult this piece is? and to prep it in what short time. and to have the sound that he has? as the homeboy says hes worked his ass off. and he got the solo for a reason.

  • I thought Bobby played it beautifully, that piece is a ballbuster that ends on a d above DHC. There are very few trumpeters out there today who could come close to playing that chart like Bobby did.

  • Well it certainly didn't deserve a standing ovation. (Bobby nor the band) and that slow tempo was a drag! This just goes to show that Maynard is the greatest trumpet player ever!

  • he totally screwed this performance. listen to Scooter's performance of this song then listen to the version that YouTube has of Maynard performing it on the Ed Sullivan Show and you tell me that this one here is good? this is an insult to even hear it this slow and sloppy. Bobby sure fucked this one up. BAD.

  • are u high?

  • I am a big fan of Bobby's but whenever someone offers a comparison vid like cadillacdude, it's always good to go check it out. I found one w Scooter and UNT band and cadillac is totally correct. Bobby's a legend, but scooter's performance on this one particular piece, was better.

  • thanks junkyman, i wish everyone had a level head for comparing like you showed in this situation.

  • bobby plays this so much better the Engelbright. Engelbright is an overrated nobdy. He can't play anywhere as good as Bobby or Roger. That's why he has to play all the Maynard tribute gigs, because he can't make it in NYC.

  • What? Shew sounds like straight shit.

He's by far the biggest Maynard wannabe. Are you serious?.. Gotta be kiddin' me. This isn't the first video Shew fucked up a great Maynard tune.

Shew and Roger are garbage, listen to Roger's gonna fly now, the Shews' What's New.

    Are you fuckin' kidding me?

  • Wow... Bobby doesn't sound like Bobby... played with him many times, he usually sounds killin on his lead stuff...

  • sounds like every section has their own tempo.

  • the best solo for this song is from ARTURO FOREVER !!!!

  • kill yourself faggot

  • I'm sure Bobby Shew is a good trumpet player. He's not in Maynard's league--missed notes, bad taste. Sorry, dude. Listen to Maynard's version, also on YouTube.

  • Bobby is AMAZING bebop player, I much prefer that.

  • Nobody asked you. Who cares what you think, you're clueless.

  • scott's killin it!

  • bobby is a great player, i have played a concert with him as lead and he is amazing! but he also can be kindove stuck up!

  • he looks and sounds like the trumpet version of Al Kay, a toronto based tromebonist.

  • you can see him shaking his head after playing it.

he knows he screwed it up.

  • i met andy martin at a tcu jazz festival...he is an AMAZING trombone player

  • Interesting tempo.

  • There are definately players who can take a maynard solo and play it at the same level of talent. Take Arturo Sandoval, his range is even greater than MF's. And what about Vizzuti? He can play anything you put in front of him perfectly.

I think Bobby Shew kicks ass. And I miss Maynard.

  • the first phrase is poor

there is video of scooter doing i so much better

    still he got the notes

  • Dude Bobby sounds killin it's not all about perfection. Yay for high notes

  • Bobby is not Maynard; Maynard is not Bobby. Completely different greats.

I have seen both. Maynard had a way of fire and passion -- he believed and went for it. Bobby has a way of finesse and playing parts with tact and wit. I couldn't imagine duplicating Maynard, Bobby was playing the part that's it. I have heard Bobby nail it to the wall so many times, on this he sounded tired. Plus hard part! Bobby is one of the greats as was Maynard RIP.

  • It doesnt help that bobby suffers from emphesema. So if he sounds tired that is the reason. If you played trumpet you would understand.

  • Not even close to MF, No Vibrato, and he mised half of the original notes

  • that is true though but it was maynard i mean come on nobody can touch him

  • jon faddis

  • No disrespect to Bobby cause he is a great player and he did a nice job but Scooter definitely shoulda played it.

  • I call this music style Musculr Dystrophy Music.

It was the sax section that was outta tune. Flat mostly. The piano and the bass are merely manniquin positions in this band. Cain't hear them atall.

At the end of the song, "Okay Bobby, you worked up an appetite. Go eet a cow."

  • not talking shit but could you do better?

  • Who ME? I ain't no bigg fatt ugly muthafugga.

  • bobby is the man but that band is out of tune i think

  • Where is Wayne Bergeron?

  • funniest thing ever i played a concert w/ bobby and one of our really good trumpet players tryed to out blow bobby and bobby just ripped off into the altisimo range and i started laughing in the middle of the tune at our trumpet player it was so damn funnt

  • I like the faster version better. Not bad though.

  • Very good!!

  • Tell Bobby Shew to sit down and let Engelbright play it. Bobby Shew is sort of an asshole too, and he's no tasteebro and sure as hell no where near THE Maynard Ferguson.

  • I agree that Englebright should have played this one, but Bobby Shew isn't an asshole.

  • Maybe he was just an asshole the day that i met him then. It doesn't matter because i play on his sig. mouthpiece (Marcinkiewicz) and his yamaha sig. horn. Shows how much i dont like him.

  • haha...i play on the shew 1

  • I've met both Shew and Englebright. Bobby is an very nice guy. Scooter is too (even though some of the Tastee Bros stuff is a bit abrasive). NOBODY can touch Maynard's upper register virtuosity on that tune (or any other) - not even Scott.

  • i suppose abrasive is the word (lol)

  • can we stop there? lol

  • I liked it. =)
