Commenters...Why can't we just enjoy the playing for what it is? Was this posted for our adjudication or our enjoyment? Patrick... I really enjoyed your playing, don't ever lose the joy of what music is supposed to be about.
Great performance. The piano sounds like it might be a Baby Grand. I've found most of them to have a hard action and they seem to have a flat sound. It could have been tuned for a standard pitch instead of a universal pitch. I use to have problem's with my little finger's being weak and had to do excerizes to strengthen them.
@gemmaliantinis Probably because you hear Beethoven's work as played by modern instruments. It's hard to translate the same style onto instruments that are made differently. I appreciate Beethoven's music though, I like the way melodies kind of... respond to each other?
You play it way to fast so you often lose control. Master the piece in a slower tempo and then speed up as much as you like. Listen to Barenboim's live version or Gilels. Other than that, congratulations :)
I see Arrau is mentioned here. I saw him back in the early '70s. He was old, but there, in the Milan conservatory, he disappointed me. And a friend of mine. I would say that this young man plays earnestly and his rhythm, maybe not dynamics, is spot on.
i played this back in high school. i carve stone for a living now. i miss playing the piano dearly. i could never play this well now with my hands being so stiff.
thanks. i want to go back to it since things have gotten less demanding in my life now. Chopin,Beethovan,Schubert. i still have some of my old excercise books. and can still sight read very well. its the fingering. it will take some time to make these fingers get back up to speed. use to be skinny, now their fat fingers. thanks na7104. i'm gonna do it.
@na7104 o' one more thing. my old classmates and friends who see me around town. never fail to ask me one question more than any other. "do you still play the piano"? i tell them a white lie. yes.
Chill out about what? I was giving advice on something that a person wants to accomplish. In addition, a lie is lie. You spelt liar wrong, by the way. you can't be serious justin. seriously, I don't think you are serious, one of those silly youtubers just seeking to create a stir. that or you are a serious nitpicker, this is one of the most listenable performances I've come across.
Youth sometimes gives us unconventional things, some of them bad. Even unnsavory. But Patrick has the qualities of promise: tallents that will only expand exponentially as he travels deeper into the music he loves the older he gets. He has a oneness with the soul of the piano, and as my teacher Mrs Sallee used to say, the forerunner to a great pianist is if their soul is one with the instrument. Not only does he have that, he has the wild ideas that characterized the composer's own music, too!!
Just wondering- how long did this take you to learn (or anyone else out their who is learning this song)? I just printed out the first 2 pages and they don't seem like anything too hard. Does it get harder?
Excellent speed, technique, and nerves, you look composed. BUT, your pinky finger sounds weak though around 1:28 - 1:33 and especially at 5:00 - 5:25 - the arpeggio inversions. A few missed notes. Also, try to work on your dynamics. I know it's difficult, but remember, the instrument's full name is pianoforte. Relax a bit more.
@QXQ29 i agree, but in his defense, it sounds like the upper register of the piano is more resistant than it should be. plus it's so tinny and thin - it easily gets drowned out by the left hand. i guess one must adjust accordingly, which he does....somewhat (cf. 3:45).
@coolsnak3 It's the microphone not the piano. You may be a musician but not an engineer, methinks. it's because the mic is closer to the high register. Recording a piano properly is not easy.
well played, but there's much more to beethoven than exuberance and rapturous energy. i don't hear any of the subtle delights in this performance that draw me to beethoven.

Jerry: Oh, Noel! Yeah, the one who plays the bongos...
yeah really. I've been watching performances of the Waldstien, only first movement, looking for a performance that starts out at pp for a hour and out of 13 performances I've watched the first few minutes of I still have found one.
I love his left hand. Out of all the performances I've heard of this sonata his left hand stands out as absolutely perfect. The left hand needs to stay strong and firm;it's what grounds the right hand;controls it;atleast it tries to. I love the tempo of this piece. My problem is with your articulation of the long scalar runs. They're not light enough. If you listen to Horowitz or Kemph or especially Gilels, it's as if the melody line is weightless. Long gossamer threads of silk. Can't hear that here
YOU are an EXCELLENT pianist! Great job on the Sonata! I have a question for you. I have played Chopin's Ballade in G Minor, and I'm half way through Chopin's Sonata in B Minor, 4th movement. Technically, do you think I'm capable of playing the Waldstein Sonata first mvmt? When I took piano lessons 30 years I retained what I learned duing that 5 year period. I'm just not sure if I can play this piece. I know at some point, I'll need a teach for assistance with dynamics IF I'm capable.
The first movement isn't really that terrible - the third movement is the scary stuff. If you're playing stuff like the B Minor and the 1st Ballade, you can cope with the Waldstein's 1st mov.
I find it quite good. easy to judge, but do you see his age: he has time to get older as Arrau and mature his play
I find quite good things here: the tempo is very well kept, good technique, but I would watch the lento passages: 1:05-1:60and all the others:PLEASE! make it less hard, less accents, no romantic, Otherwise, just need to be more calm...
The bright tempo of this piece is hardly the most difficult of its technical demands. Fast notes aren't what makes this movement so remarkable. These is something else amazing happening here (if you look/listen closely)
Although romanticism happened at a specific point in chronological history, all of these movements,(classical, impressionist, modern, post-modern etc) are largely defined by philosophical ideals that translate into stylistic qualities. The idea of the "Hero" is a romantic one.
There are some redeeming aspects of this performance, but a great deal of the detail is missing. I think that a thorough analysis or a better understanding of the structure could lead to a more informed way of playing. For example, in the second 'period' of the first subordinate theme, the melody is lost by the upper voice triplets. (this happens again in the Recapitulation) Voices suddenly disappear many times during this performance.
I thought that Romantic merely designated a period of time and not necessarily a style. That said, the piece is definitely of the Classical period, though the later of the Classical and therefore about as near Romantic as can be without being Romantic itself. I should think that Baroque music is far more removed without losing a sense of refinement, in any case. Regardless, you play quite agreeably to me, though I find the fermata only a little too long considering your choice of speed.
mantiene la velocidad ,, he
Terrific! I love this sonata, especially the first movement. I also enjoy a bright piano where every note sparkles. You play with great energy, clear articulation, and nice dynamic constrasts. I didn't always hear your grace notes. It would be good to bring out your top notes more in the chordal "chorale" sections. Overall, two thumbs up!!
good rithmic performance. I also prefer (and do it myself) this speed, and do not think that the one of Arrau is a great interpretation, but only a very professional one. for the great I intend Yves Nat, Schnabel and, more away, Backhaus and Kempff. i'd like to listen to the 2nd nad 3rd
This speed is not the right one. Have you seen that it's Allegro, and it's in 4/4 and not 2/2. You can count in Allegro (120-144) and realize that Arrau's interpretation is within those limits. Arrau said in his 80th birthday that he had just understood Beethoven not until then. He's the one that played Beethoven the most in the 20th Century. He's studied with Martin Kaiser in the beggining of the century, (Czerny's pupil, and as you may be know, Czerny is Beethoven's pupil).
Good job overall. Good tempo, much faster than Arrau's although you slowed down too much between 6:12 to 6:22. From 1:28 to 1:34, on the repeat, and 4:57 to 5:25, the "pinky" notes can use a little more emphasis to bring out the melody.
much better than Arrau? lol. better than you or me, perhaps, but also like me Mr. Merrill still makes common mistakes -- smooshed up triplets, rushed melody lines, etc. While Merrill is in control 99% of the time, Arrau is in control 100% of the time. Furthermore, any serious musician can play this piece blazingly fast, but it takes a master like Arrau to make a slow tempo work.
All that said, I hope that I can play this piece half as well as Merrill by the time I have my senior recital in May.
Much better playing on offer here than your Mendelssohn op.14. You have progressed very well since that. It's all about choosing the correct pieces for your ability, i don't condone ambitious virtuosic pieces unless it comes easily. Always think of the listener and whether you truly believe you can do a piece justice(at that particular moment in your career). Listening to this made me feel relaxed and i could enjoy the playing as you were able to control the piece and not the piece control you.
first of all, i'd like to say that this was comletely amazing interpretation, really good¡¡¡, u got great sense of rythm , nonetheles, looks like were on a hurry, just try to breath a bit more, anyway, great interpretation¡¡¡¡¡
I liked it. I was looking for something on the perky side and this foot the bill, and with control too. The other performances I've seen are too slow.
The comments aren't posted because it's unique perfection! Very nice style and technique. What can folks really say? Other than - SUPERB! I will be looking for Patrick Merrill CD's in stores (soon) I hope! =o)
hand off the left hand, and just as soon as I began to pick up on it disappeared.I am not sure that you are conscious of it,because you never exploited it.Please develop that and accentuate it.I liked
I cant believe nobody has posted any comments on this video. Man, great job. I really enjoyed your interpretation. By any chance, do you have the 2nd and 3rd movemnets as well? I would be delighted to watch them as well!!
fantastic talent!! but it is being played too fast! slow it down some, a little more pedal in places, and a little more emotion and it will perfect.

Your ability to move your fingers rivals that of Glen Gould.

mantiene la velocidad ,, he

Terrific! I love this sonata, especially the first movement. I also enjoy a bright piano where every note sparkles. You play with great energy, clear articulation, and nice dynamic constrasts. I didn't always hear your grace notes. It would be good to bring out your top notes more in the chordal "chorale" sections. Overall, two thumbs up!!

i would hi-5 you if 'twere possible to do so right now. Beethoven is my weakest point in playing...its too articulated for me haha.
great work man. I havent heard this sonata performed much...but im sure it could be up there on the Top 10 List

ostinp 4 years ago

What occurs bewteen the phrases is lovely and expressive. The phrases themselves are just a
mechanistic equivalent of 100,000 others performances given this last century.

good rithmic performance. I also prefer (and do it myself) this speed, and do not think that the one of Arrau is a great interpretation, but only a very professional one. for the great I intend Yves Nat, Schnabel and, more away, Backhaus and Kempff. i'd like to listen to the 2nd nad 3rd
clubisas 4 years ago

From 1:28 to 1:34, on the repeat, and 4:57 to 5:25, the "pinky" notes can use a little more emphasis to bring out the melody.
schou017 4 years ago
much better than arrau in my opinion.. just need a little more practice in some parts, and you will be the king of this piece :)
mayorde18 4 years ago
much better than Arrau? lol. better than you or me, perhaps, but also like me Mr.

Sometimes you almost got into playing the right
hand off the left hand, and just as soon as I began to pick up on it disappeared.I am not sure that you are conscious of it,because you never exploited it.Please develop that and accentuate it.I liked
some of your dynamic swellings and would invite
you to do more of that. Thanks and good luck.
smithsherman 4 years ago
I liked your sense of vivacity...largely conveyed by
your preference to play on the front side of the
beat.I think it would be even more effective,if
you varied it on and behind the beat.I very much
like your sense of punctuated detache for the
left hand sforzandi. If you played with the structural
call and answer elements more through accelerandi
and rallentandi,it would make the structure more
interesting,...because then we couldn't take it
for granted as listeners.

I cant believe nobody has posted any comments on this video. Man, great job. I really enjoyed your interpretation. By any chance, do you have the 2nd and 3rd movemnets as well? I would be delighted to watch them as well!!
