  • Hey, i ahve problem in mudbox with extracting displacment map, there is some problems on Terrain_LP, cann`t get it working smooth, tried to make bigger search distance but still some some holes in Terrain_LP! :(

  • This is helpful!

  • So here is the first part

  • I have a problem, photoshop is asking me to choose a embeded colour profile because the image doesnt support one.. and do not colour manage is greyed out! help?

  • I have to say, you are a amazing and thank you very much for these tutorials! :D

I did helder pinto's cryengine 3 tutorials and saw there was barriers with CE3 default terrain tools and this opened a whole new door to me!

I was wondering if I could download these to use a references incase I forget things, since my internet is terrible and I had to wait for this to buffer for a long time.. my isp is a piece of garbage.

  • i would love to be a level designer, in fact i will.

  • I've been dying to find someone doing a full long tutorial for this stuff im crazy about learning this Thanks a bunch man!

  • I used 512 x 512 in cm and it turned out huge and a lot bigger to yours, I think I did something wrong

  • I`ve a question,

I saw you have Blender. So I wanted to ask, if I can bake out Normalmaps like this in Blender?

I don´t want to buy any of this expensive stuff, especially not maya (over 1000$ just to creat a plane).

  • Following you're steps exactly, Mudbox fails to render the displacement map because the target model has no UV. I didn't see you create a UV for you're plane at any time, so why doesn't Mudbox give you the same error? Creating a UV within Mudbox results in a horrible UV and very distorted results. Any ideas?

  • @s13n1 I should clarify my comment. If you create a UV for you're plane object (low poly) within Mudbox, it will do a very bad job and you will end up with an unusable height-map output. Did you're plane have a UV already created by Maya? You only need a UV for the low poly Plane, not the high poly terrain. So you can import a terrain and sclupt it in Mudbox then bake the displacement map onto the low poly plane.

  • @s13n1 ya the UVs were automatically created for the low poly plane used for baking my texture maps. You dont need UVs for the highpoly terrain.

  • @wenda111287

Um sorry but how do you get that smooth lightning and sculpting in Mudbox at the beginning?Mine is way more rough so that every box of the grid is lighted seperatly and my sculpting is not that smooth as yours, even though the grid is 8x8.

  • @Sourushurakku change brush strengths and sizes, lighting hold right mouse button and click smooth shading and other stuff.

  • dude this is amazing. i am going to work through these. never made an enviroment but thats what i want to do and your tutorial is really nice.

  • I'm having a problem exporting the displacement map from Mudbox and importing into Photoshop. I'm using Mudbox 2012 and PS CS5. The tif comes in as a black and white file but no gray tones. Like a sillouette... Any ideas?

  • @pgulbis Nevermind I figured it out. Instead of just dragging to PS, you can go to File --> Open As --> Select the TIF file and select File Type as TIF. Very strange but it works ;)

  • @pgulbis oh nvm thank you! lol

  • @pgulbis doesnt work for me actually -_-

  • @pgulbis Im also getting this problem, did you find a way to fix it?

  • @wenda111287 Hey man, do you have a website? Id love to see more of your stuff.

  • @ZAFR1C Thanks, I'm currently working on my portfolio at the very moment, I'll post videos of my work on my youtube channel as soon as its done :)

  • @wenda111287 Really amazing terrain work. I wish you were as good at l4d as you are at landscape modelling =)

  • Can you do a terrain without World Machine, it is so expensive to buy for me, so i want to know how to make terrain just in Mudbox/Zbrush Max/Maya and then export it to UDK/CryEngine

  • @Bo3082 Ofcourse you can, I'm currently training myself to do so. You just need to be very familiar with each brush in mudbox and paint your color map inside mudbox :).

  • @wenda111287 Stupid question but how can I export the plane as object? Because atm I'm creating all kind of files that can not be opened by world machine. Do I have to install an additional plug-in/s?

  • @Bo3082 err you can afford Mudbox/Zbrush which are around 500$ each and 3dsmax or maya which are over 1000$ each but you can't afford World Machine which costs 89$??? Something smells fishy here... If you're going to pirate at least admit to it.

  • @pgulbis He very well could have been using trails, my friend. Just a thought.

  • @pgulbis mudbox/maya/max and any other autodesk software you can get for free on a student license, like I did.

  • I would love to be able to download your knowledge of this stuff directly into my brain xD. Seems like a lot of work though to create just a single terrain grid, but the results are amazing!

  • I'm working on my first landscape while following the tut. I'm pretty new to this, and have a question. I'm just wondering how come it's a 2048 by 2048 texture for a 512 by 512 plane? How do you calculate that based on your plane size?

  • @InterFiction100

Hi there, the size of the plane doesn't matter that much, what matters the most is the size of your heightmap. I used a 512x512 plane just as a personal preference to work with in mudbox. I could've worked with a 256x256 or 1024x1024 plane and have the same result in the end.

  • Haha you apologized for your english, jesus, i didn't even notice que tu étais français xD Tu as vécu à l'étranger, c'est pas possible pour un français d'avoir un accent aussi bon ^^

    Thanks from Noors, PC.

  • hi my scrape tool doesnt seem to work with stamps any idea why?

  • @zxcottonxz add another subdivision, and increase the strenth and make sure you choose a stamp.

  • Please answer this question. How do i install macros? I looked it up on how to install them but when i put the macro Coastal_overlays in the coverage library folder and reopen WM, it doesnt appear in the macros. Please help soon, thanks and love your tutorials.

  • @peacefulwarrior96 i have the same problem please help

  • @thefozzybeer I think i have figured out the solution. If you have downloaded the basic edition or free WM, then you must have the full version in order to install macros. The free one doesn't allow installation of macros. Thats my guess otherwise i got nothing else.

  • @peacefulwarrior96 thanks!!!

  • When I go to view my TIFF file in Photoshop CS5 I get " The RGB document "XX_g200.tif" has a file format that does not support embedded color profiles." When I assign a working RGB the image goes black and white....... Help? :P

  • Nice tutorial! ;) Ive sent u pm with a question , with picture url included, hope you have time to answer ;) good work ;)

  • Can i run mudbox with intel i7 263qm, 4gb ram and nvidia gt525m (windows 7 64bit)?

I tried mudbox 2011 32bit, 2012 32 and 64 bit, when i double click it nothing happens. Maya and 3ds max 64bit are working fine!

    (sorry for my bad english)

  • @GaGiCF Your system should be able to run it. If not, then make sure to check the minimum system requirements. Also not the Nvidia geforce cards do not work to well with 3D programs such as this as it CAN create problems.

  • i cant figure out how to move around in mudbox :O pls help

  • @Tileproxy hold down ALT and click and drag, also mouse wheel or right click and drag

  • @imnotstpid thanks alot!

  • love you (homo)

  • If anyone is having trouble exporting the plane as an OBJ, make sure you've got the plugin "objExport.mll" turned on in the Plug-in Manager under "Window -> Settings/Preferences"

  • i need help. i do everything you say. but when i import the texture to world machine is somehow stretched. could you explain that? the only difference is that i use diferent FOV, yours is 50, i put 65. nothing more. whats going on?

  • awesome tutorial!

  • ok i think i HAVE to shoot a question. I need to make a terrain that it will be the ground of Jerusalem. How can i define the mesurment in naya for map size? And what is the size of this map in real units? they say that city will take some 4X4km. How much bigger is this than yr map?

  • @slagnecro

Hi, it all depends on the resolution of your heightmap (2048x2048 = approx 2km²; 4096x4096 = approx 4=km² in cryengine) when imported into cryengine with a 1 meter/unit.

  • @wenda111287 Thank you so much man! Your help is priceless! When i finish my project, i will mimic your behaviour. I will post it on my wsite just to be public. Afterall, in cgart, its not the tools should be mystical but imagination of the artist.

  • When I open the displacement map inside the World machine, the result in 3D view is like LINEAR (Stairs-like). What am I doing wrong? The displacement image looks fine and smoothed (anti-alias) in photoshop though.

  • @letmego11

It needs to be in 16bit format.

  • great freaking tutorial bro, keep it up

  • Is worldmachine essential for this processor or do you just use it to speed up your workflow?

  • this tutorial made me decide not to make maps for crysis...i had no idea this kind of work went into it...4 different programs and 8 hours....but i have much more respect for the games i do play though its hard knowing i don't have what it takes ...but very educational to know how it all works.

  • @thelaughingman79 You don't have to do it this way, it's just how he does it.

  • @thelaughingman79 It's got nothing to do with mapping for Crysis. This is also how this man chooses to make environments for UDK, or any other engine. It's an awesome pipeline that produces results far better than normal results. Look up a normal CryEngine 3 terrain tutorial, it could take a few seconds if you want.

  • I got so flustered that it took me a second to find the like button.

  • Hello, I have just wanted to say thank you 10.000 times for this tutorial. This is one of the best and most detailed tutorials i have ever seen. Quallity of terrain is amazing, i am doing it right now i just hope that it will work for Unity engine.

  • Awesome job man! And how do they perform ingame? Because there are so detailed... Thanks again man!

  • I am amazed it looks like a painting thanks for this

  • this is aawesome

  • very few people would actually take the time to do this, I greatly appreciate it.

  • Awesome tutorial! Thank you very much! ^^
