this does look sub-par but the whole not being able to die thing doesn't bother me cause when you think about it, you cant really die that much in modern games anyway. you just restart from the last checkpoint or revive with a pool of infinite lives. its not like old games were if you reach 0 lives, game over, back to start. I think the developers just wanted to cut out the middle man and remove redoing things you already did.
