What a blast from the past: I remember seeing that interview in my childhood...no idea where, for in Germany we only had 3 TV stations back then. But I clearly remember them singing that song in Swedish...thanks for posting!
Dick Cavett does have a very ironic style of interview, but I think it shows just how intelligent Abba were ... they kept up with him and even shared jokes. Good stuff.
@helthuismartin Yes, that was his style - very cerebral and complicated and drawn-out, unlike most of the talk show hosts of his day. But that's what made his show so fascinating: you got to know what celebrities really thought.
Cavett has a very individual interviewing style. It probably doesn't translate well for people who are not native English speakers. His comments tend to be very ironic and tongue-in-cheek. I think ABBA were great sports playing along with him and they speak English very well considering it's not their language. Find me 4 Americans who can speak Swedish -- not so easy. ;-)
why did mr. dick have to throw that "home on the range" cole porter cow boy crap on abba? i guess he thought that because they're scandinavians they gave a shit. lol
That's it, sucra, "his nervousness and eccentric appearance", That is why i've been watching cavett since 1969 ! , funny in his own way none the less , thank you !
they are so sweet, decent and natural people, it is a real delight to travel back in time to wwhen the charts were ruled by artists who impressed with their music and not with their ego-problems and their boldness to steal ideas. --- ABBA is probably the most underrated band ever - they are just unbelievably brillant, simply perfect both in composing as in performing!!!
they had so many no 1 singles that it seems unlikey to call them underrated, but i mean the serious music - lovers, who always thought of them as some bunch of marionettes being sold as an image, not as hard working, highly skilled musicians.
And i must admit that i was one of those, too, when i was a kid.
Anyway, they are not just professional, but also very decent, down to earth people, - a rare thing in the glam - biz
its something weird i know, but something in my mind makes me guessing this guy, Dick cavett, has some level parental with George Bush.Call me a retard but thats is I think about it.
Hey I just figured out that it's a good thing these folks decided to use the letters of their first names to spell out the name of their group. It they had used the letters of their last names, they might have come up with somethink like AFUL.
And no, as a matter of fact, I don't have anything better to do.
I've been wondering lately what this bunch would actually sound like without the benefit of a lot of backup musicians and/or overdubbing studio tricks. Looks like I now have my answer: They sound pretty darned good!
It's amazing that in this entire 20+ minute interiew, with the exception of Agnetha asking Bjorn for an English word and a very brief wisecrack to her by Benny about her pants falling down, not one member of the group says a single word directly to any other member the whole time.
I wonder if Cavett had any clue at all what an awkward situation he was walking into when he booked this show.
its IS ugly, not are ugly. what language do you speak that does not differentiate between singular and plural? I am asking seriously because I am learning several language and some dont use is/are in the present tense.
I agree. the comment is a little spooky in 1908 a lady named sally rusa was in the woods looking for a dog until a ghost came and killed her so if ur reading this u will find a bloody body in your closet hanging there haunting you and will kill you and ur family and if u want to stop this just sends this to 6 videos in 30 mins or this will happen good luck" seriously, it creeps me out!!!
haha I was laughing, Agnetha was so excited when the host ask them to read the notes, and Frida was like: "just give me that", oh gosh I just love ABBA!!!Agnetha is adorable and she sang this kind of in the same note she sang "Sliping thru my fingers", amazing how high her voice can reach!!!I think it was a great idea that Frida made the guy say 777 hahaha everything that ABBA does is just so special!
In reference to the comment below, while "Don't Fence Me In" is very characteristic of America and the West particularly, it's not really accurate to call it a patriotic song since America is not referred to and the lyrics of the song could really be applied to anyone, anywhere.
I thought it was hilarious. Their impromtu singing was very good considering they hadn't rehearsed it. Agnatha losing her drawers at 5 was cute in the preceding segment. As always, she's a doll.
Cavett was fine, so was ABBA, especially Agnetha and Bjorn. Awkward moments at times, but to be expected with two couples recently divorced and not speaking their native tongue. ABBA were good sports in trying the song and seemed to be having fun. DC again was looking for a comedy moment, Swedes singing about the wide open range like they were American cowboys. I've read that Bjorn was happy with their choice of Cavett as interviewer, but some unnamed objective they'd had was not achieved.
Go Frida! I like how she asks the Dick to say 777 - why in the world should they have to sing that American song? What does that have to do with anything.
Shooosh, how is that guy allowed to do an interview? =]
Hehehe XD. It's always fun to hear a non-Swedish person trying to make out some of the strange sounds of the Swedish language. XD It must be kinda hard, so I can't blame them, though... (I'm a Swede myself, so I dunno, lol 8P)
@nightwish789 hi there I hope it is not too late but to make the SJ sounds as well the others KJ and so on just try this, try to make the spanish sound of J at the same time you put your mouth like if you were going to say english SH sound. Hälsin.... hej då
"They song in Swedish without rehearsal, an American patriotic song, which has nothing to do with them.
I think they did well, with an idiot for an interviewer, these are a band from a cultured country and did well."
That's an interesting point of view. The fact is, that's not a patriotic song, it's a cultural song. And the US does have a culture--that song is an example.
