Cavett has a very individual interviewing style. It probably doesn't translate well for people who are not native English speakers. His comments tend to be very ironic and tongue-in-cheek. I think ABBA were great sports playing along with him and they speak English very well considering it's not their language.  Find me 4 Americans who can speak Swedish -- not so easy. ;-)

Many times, when watching Dick Cavette inteview his guests,

it felt like I was watching a really smart high school kid who was struggling to play up the show to the rest of his schoolmates.

I would've preferred that he just concentrated on really trying to get to know his guests more than trying to go for a laugh.

Still, it was good to see an ABBA inteview.

Cavett was fine, so was ABBA, especially Agnetha and Bjorn. Awkward moments at times, but to be expected with two couples recently divorced and not speaking their native tongue. ABBA were good sports in trying the song and seemed to be having fun. DC again was looking for a comedy moment, Swedes singing about the wide open range like they were American cowboys. I've read that Bjorn was happy with their choice of Cavett as interviewer, but some unnamed objective they'd had was not achieved.
