@KleurNeon Not exactly. Mac OS X is based off the original UNIX system, with packages and components found in BSD UNIX, AT&T UNIX, and the Mach kernel from UNIX systems. OS X is a direct ancestor of UNIX, which means that most UNIX applications work perfectly with OS X, HP-UX and other UNIX-based systems. Linux is a completely new operating system with components built to work ground up for PC hardware, and UNIX programs need a bit of porting to work on the GNU/Linux kernel.

@KleurNeon Not exactly. Mac OS X is a direct descendant of the original UNIX from the 70's, with components from UNIX. So are HP-UX and Solaris. This means that most applications designed for UNIX will work perfectly on OS X. GNU/Linux is a brand new OS from the 90's built to work from the ground up with PC hardware. It still is based off the UNIX core, but it is not the same OS. Most apps for UNIX systems require a bit of porting to work on Linux or GNU. So technically, OS X came first.
@daesix And what make you think that? Ubuntu is a slow one, user-friendly doesn't mean much to me now (I am able to install Gentoo/Funtoo without much problems) and I start to dislike Unity. If you want a Gentoo/Funtoo variant that is binary and user-friendly (It's a tad harder than Ubuntu), I think you may like Sabayon.
why is anyone wanting to have a mac-like linux? linux and mac os X are quite different but anyone has its special features. so why doesnt linux have its own style?
Wobbly windows = fail... it's such a cheesy lame effect, eye candy without a purpose, and just slows down the computer and glitches around the screen... Gah I hate when people show random Ubuntu effects that everyone has to suggest it's a better OS. There's a reason Apple's multi-million dollar R&D team didn't implement that kind of a feature.
What exactly makes it jiggle so wondrously (at :35), the Copmiz or AWN, stack applet or file browser applet? I've openSUSE 11.3 and I'd like to only add stacking and that wiggle, if I could.
Simply put, a Mac just functions better than a Linux box. I'd much rather be using a Mac than a Linux box. OS X's Aqua user interface is far superior to Linux. Plus, nine times out of ten, you end up running beta software on Linux. Who wants to be a test guinea pig? Some people just want to use and enjoy their computers. That's what Mac is about: a superior user experience.
ubuntu rocks, i installed it on a old laptop which only had 192mb RAM and it has ATI graphics which blows ubuntu away with the compiz effects, and it runs so much faster then windows xp :) GO UBUNTU! - You cannot blame it bcuz it free! I also got ubuntu installed on my Dell Inspiron 531 machine and it does a great job, bit bad the hardware drivers messes things up so i cannot download them, but i still got good ol' compiz
This OS X debate vs. Ubuntu is pointless. Most Ubuntu users never used Mac (OSX in its appropriate hardware) and therefore cannot understand the level of detail that is put into those computers. The price is high, but the value is there.
I use both OSX and Linux and I don't see any point in making my Mint look like OS X. Gnome+Compiz has plenty of amazing tools that work well! Mac4lin takes away functionality, but cannot make linux function like a Mac. I guess it's style over function here.
i played around with Mandriva for a while. very similar desktop, it all comes down to the gui you wish to run eg gnome etc. I really wanted to stick with it. sadly the bottom line is most apps i use are windows based only. yes i could run am VM i suppose but whats the point running windows inside linux, may as well just run windows.
Why is it every time someone makes a video "Ubuntu that looks like OSX!" or "Ubuntu that looks like Windows 7/Vista" ... they show off all kinds of effects and eye candy that aren't present in OSX/Windows 7? The wobbly windows is always the biggest offender.
Google around for "get ubuntu beta 10.04" - I think it's not in the 'intended for the general populace' stage yet however, and actually it's usually not worth it until the last one or two announced betas.
@TheRobin1232 Well, linux is not for everyone, that´s true. You must have some patient and don´t give up after first problem... I am no PC wizard, but have linux (only) for 2 years and it´s great. Win can go f*ck themself.. But I´d like to try a Mac some time maybe.
LOL @ all the people complaining. They are just showing off their anger because they have no real computer skill whatsoever. To be efficient with a unix type system (not counting OSX since they dumbed it down to the point you can't do any advanced shit), you really need to have at least a moderate skill and understanding. It's built for power and speed, not pretty cpu hogging pointless eyecandy and bad multitasking. All OSes have their different uses. One is a hammer, one is a screwdriver, etc.
i see you point, which one is this? the hammer or the screw driver, if its the screw driver, sadly it doesnt fit all screws either. its like buying a car that can only drive on 10% of the roads. the bottom line is most apps you buy are windows based in my industry, as much as i would prefer to use linux, i cant, im forced to use windows.
This is true and I agree completely. Everyone is a tool. hehe, that's why I have one of each type sitting around me for different situations. I have a mac, a windows machine, a linux desktop and a bunch of linux and BSD servers. I definitely like linux and BSD for server applications, but, you are absolutely right, for desktop usage you can't beat win or mac because of the larger software base.
Java based "OFFICE" system? You mean OpenOffice? It's not Java based. Also, there are other office systems that are lighter weight if you prefer. Also, it is *free*, and yet has better file formats than MS Office. Way to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Crappy is a computer that costs 2400 euros and has exactly the hardware i have inside my 2 years old laptop. Linux is both free and amazing, has desktop effects mac os x cannot dream about and is quick and stable. Perfect for netbooks, notebooks and desktop solutions. Crappy is not the word, believe me. Try Linux before speaking.
@Mariuxtheone How does the silly price tag make the computer itself crappy? I don't agree with what the "suits-in-charge" over at Apple are doing, but claiming that the components are crappy is a bit awkward. Also, you can run OS X, the real deal, on a "normal PC" if that's what you want......you sure seem to have some love for one part of Apple's lineup, at least.
2400 Euros? That is ridiculous. That is like $3200. Man, the EU gets boned when it comes to pricing from American companies. I thought it was bad enough that you guys paid numerically identical prices for Steam games (e.g. $49.99 game in the U.S., is 49.99 Euros in the EU, which is more than $49.99). I can't imagine that many people own Mac computers in Europe. What a shame that Apple is that greedy. Oh well, their loss is the *nix community gain.
@EWnspire@EWnspire You have a Mac which has software you ACTUALLY NEED? *HEART ATTACK* Get Windows if it's software you want. Or if you want it all for free, get Linux.
@Mariuxtheone no, you have to know what linux is, android, ubuntu, linux mint, mandriva, This and much more!!! take your pick. The only thing they are superior in is recording music and stuff like that, depends what yur needs are really, for me it goes joint windows 7 and android then ubuntu with mac4lin and so on...
Right, before you go on a rant with me, I hate linux. I have used it more than once. Every time I use it, it gets worse. So I'm afraid to say macs. are. great.
@Mariuxtheone Well said about Ubuntu Linux. I just downloaded it and I'm loving it so far. Very easy to use for a novice and very, very fast compared to Windows Vista or 7. I love the plug ins!

@Cigydd It depends alot too on the GPU/CPU and much more on the settings. Any Linux distro with a vanilla kernel is just GNU/Linux. Also, believe it or not, Windows consume less battery, as said and benchmarked by Phoronix (or about the same, doesn't remember well)
@Darkteammadfiz OK, and how did Phoronix or so configure the Linux system for the test? Presuming they used the default settings, it's considerable for the Linux community to improve the installation-default settings when a laptop machine is detected :-) When it depends on the settings of the tested operating systems, no test can be accurate or appropriate to evaluate the operating system as a whole. This is much much dependant on current configurations compared. But the defaults count :-)
@Mariuxtheone Well mate i agree with you but there is only one problem is that windows is too known and well by saying this is that Programmers dont wanna develop software for linuxOS becouse people dont use linux and that is a shame becouse well i use linux all the time and im a programmer, im a huge programmer not even close to a real programmer becouse im only 14 well i know C++, BASIC, but the point is that its time to make ubuntu a real OS more computers should bring ubuntu !!!
@ctsincebay Well true but as we know elemantary basic was apart of our lives so....i will count it as a programming language just becouse it made my choise of becoming a programmer !
@Mariuxtheone Tried Linux. It's epic. Epic I tell you! But you are horribly wrong if you think Apple products are crappy. There are addons for OS X, just as there are in Linux, albeit not as many. As far as Linux goes, out of the 4 computers I have, 3 are running Linux, one is a Mac.

Ubuntu is a neat toy, but you can't do crap on it. I'm a photographer and I need to process 500 20MB images in 1 hour. An easy task with Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Bridge. NOT AN EASY TASK IN UBUNTU! I have, but never boot to it since I just can't get any real work done.
Also the java based OFFICE system feels so sloppy, and I have a very powerful PC, so it's not my specs.
Win7 runs everything. I only boot ubuntu to show it off. woowee. nice party trick.
Well, Windows is dominating the market share, because it's famous. That's it. They people are going to the store, buying a PC because it's the only thing they know. But almost everybody who gets in touch with Linux and Macintosh is starting to prefer this systems. I don't think they are doing bad anyway :)
@INTBoff Well, here's the thing. I like Ubuntu. I do. It's fun, free, and offers many alternate solutions. But Windows offers complete hardware and software recognition. At least, it does to the extent that I need it. I'm getting into graphical design and video editing. While Ubuntu offers some nifty alt's for free, they offer nothing in the way of professional level editors/VFX programs. At least nothing that is constantly supported like Adobe AE, P.Pro, or FCP, or even Apple Motion....

@INTBoff ACTUALLY, they have tried selling computers with Linux on them many times -- but it always fails because it's a bitch to use, and lacks very much compatibility. Windows sells so frequently because it's fast, stable, and easy to use.
yeah they are doing something right. They are providing enormous amount of vagisil for users like yourself with every mac purchase... so after buying your computer, you can apply vagisil quickly on your vagina to prevent rashes or any itchyness/ discomfort. (Dirty underpants of Steve Jobs included... for reference purposes of course. ) You ugly panty sniffer.
It's NOT easier to use than Mac OS X. Maybe for those, who grew up with computers, but not for many other people. You're right: the community is way better than the big companies, and I rellay like Ubuntu myself, but I don't claim that it's easier to use than every other system, because it isn't.
U'r right! I deleted Microsoft Windows XP Pro and installed Ubuntu Linux!! IT'S BEST!! If you don't believe, burn/buy/get4free the ubuntu CD/DVD and test it whitout makeovers to u'r machine. But remember, if you select the ''Try ubuntu whitout makeovers'' it's slow, cuz it's running of CD.
Ubuntu is awesome.

@Mariuxtheone Tried Linux. It's epic. Epic I tell you! But you are horribly wrong if you think Apple products are crappy. There are addons for OS X, just as there are in Linux, albeit not as many. As far as Linux goes, out of the 4 computers I have, 3 are running Linux, one is a Mac.

lolwut? Linux is useful in many ways. It's useful for hacking.

Nice thing about Ubuntu: You can alway count on finding what you need on Google.

What does "process" mean?
OpenOffice is not the fastet that's true. What do you need what Abiword or Gnumeric cannot do?

I have a OS X but not Ubuntu.

I don't know about you, but those big companies pretty much dominate the market share, so they must be doing something right.
vaiol123 2 years ago

Actually OS X is easier...

this looks nice, but you could seriously just make a hackintosh if you wanted to, and get all the mac apps.
when i made ubuntu look like this the usability became worse, and after a few months on mac i returned to vista, and now windows 7
