I am wanting a darbuka but I don't know how to pick one out. What should the size of the head be? And what is Meinl? What are the preferred darbuka made of?
@dakoata121212 darbukas come in different sizes. the most common size is commonly referred to as "tabla". The head should be a little over 8 inches in diameter and should be somewhere around 17 or 18 inches tall.
-Meinl is a German percussion company that has started to mass-produce darbukas that are similar to cheap Turkish models. If you live in a place where only these are available, or if you are not too serious about learning the darbuka, then these are fine. Otherwise they are crap.
@dakoata121212 some people prefer darbukas made from different things based on the type of music they are playing and personal preference. The best Turkish players are using darbukas made from clay with a head of fish, but there are still a lot of great darbukas made from aluminum with plastic heads..and these are much better for more humid weather where a natural skin head will not stay in tune.
Wood darbukas and fiberglass darbukas are not very good for a authentic sound.
