Why does everyone hate on sweep picking? I mean seriously it's one of the hardest guitar techniques to perform(correctly) and most people just bash people who can do it. Am I missing something?
@jimifriedman18 Cause it really isn't that hard. Alternate picking is WAY harder to do fast. Sweeping is only difficult when you first start out because it's a completely different feel. Once you have sweeping down though, it's more economical and easier to do than most other techniques.
@BloodReverence I don't know. I guess it's just all up to the player. Because for me I'm good at sweeps(my favorite technique) and alternate picking. If anything my worst skill is legato. But alternate picking came alot easier to me than sweeping.

Since I've talked to last I have been going to Berkley here in California. I had a whole semesters worth of musical phrasing and feeling relationships. Why are people debating Dimebag's efforts with this guy's efforts? Pantera pushed the envelope in a HUGE way - name another metal band that has the same power grooves that Pantera had, and/or that influenced as many bands as they did. Dimebag was a great rhythm player, and great lead player also - more based on the EVH old school style. This is not to detract from this guy's skill here - but, they are chalk and cheese, and therfore, cant or shouldnt be compared...

Um, some examples I would say are Mike McCready, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kim Thayil, Jimi Hendrix (obviously), Dimebag Darrell, Adam Jones, Trevor de Brauw, Munaf Rayani, and Jim Martin, for starters.
Not true at all, all those guys are great songwriters as well, and they all play many different styles as well. McCready for example is also an avid jazz musician, as is Thayil. They are some of the most diverse musicians in the last 50 years, I don't know what you're talking about.
No, they don't just play jazz. That was just an example. If you REALLY want to know what they play you'd pick up some albums and hear lots of jazz, blues, folk, metal, rockabilly, ragtime, classical, hell even reggae and some bluegrass if you dig deep enough. That's only for starters. The only ones who I'd say only play very limited styles are Dimebag Darrell and Adam Jones. Not saying anything against Wagoner, cause he's very talented, but it gets faaaaar better. More soulful too.

Actually I got an A- in University for Music Theory. Paul still lacks creativity and differentiation from the rest of the "prog-metal" shit that's going on out there. Anyone who has barely listened to a certain artist is going to say that all their songs sound the same. That's complete bullshit. Paul has written MUCH more creative and complex riffs than Dime has. Paul is known for his dead on performance, and even if he doesn't nail his solo's in one take, that's probably because his shit is a lot harder to play than Dime's is.
And if this music isn't hard to play, then I would LOVE to see you put up a cover of White Walls, then tell me it's easy to play.

I agree with PrisonerInGlass, Pantera is great, but hardly as technical or as difficult as BTBAM. And also BTBAM do a cover of Cemetary Gates. Obviously its vocally different but musically spot on. Not true at all, all those guys are great songwriters as well, and they all play many different styles as well. McCready for example is also an avid jazz musician, as is Thayil. They are some of the most diverse musicians in the last 50 years, I don't know what you're talking about.

No, they don't just play jazz. That was just an example. If you REALLY want to know what they play you'd pick up some albums and hear lots of jazz, blues, folk, metal, rockabilly, ragtime, classical, hell even reggae and some bluegrass if you dig deep enough. That's only for starters. The only ones who I'd say only play very limited styles are Dimebag Darrell and Adam Jones. Not saying anything against Wagoner, cause he's very talented, but it gets faaaaar better. More soulful too.

i dont know if i am more more amazed by his skill or the fact that he is playing just an everyday ibanez s series guitar... i love seeing stuff like that because you always hear/ see your heroes playing on stuff that unless you got to their point of success you couldnt afford it. it still had the factory pickups...even though all of his stuff is probably adjusted and modified to his exact standards its still cool though.

Sweeps are just arpeggios, it's pretty easy to get the stuff down, just hard to syncronize your hands to do sweeps really fast.
