Cette cantate date de l'année 1707. (voir Gilles Cantagrel - Les cantates de J.-S Bach). Livre en français seulement qui porte exclusivement sur les cantates de Bach.
Hmm... I'm on the fence with this one. They are, without doubt, not professionals, but for what they are they do it "correctly". There is a marked absence of mastery, but that doesn't mean that they suck, really they're good for what they are.
Not sure why there's such harsh criticism here. The choir sounds lovely, and glitteringinsanity does a fine job with her solo. This is a young amateur group; what do you expect? It's true that the tempos are a bit slow, I do miss the bassoon part (here played inaudibly on bass) and the conductor gets the date of composition wrong: most scholars think this is one of Bach's earliest cantatas (from 1706 or so), not one of his latest. But kudos for posting the only youtube video of this great work!
My choir (same age as these guys) definitely did this better. The terzetto (mvt.5) was just awful. The tenor needs his ear checked, he is very very flat (0:40 Part2) The other two voices virtually disappear. In mvt.3 the soprano would project so much better if she stood up straight and had air support on her F#'s and G's. The bass section disappears on their low notes. The accompaniment should be only done with a quartet and continuo, so it isn't in the way. And why are they all bobbing around?
It is clear that you are simply making up absurd generalities about this group, for a bunch of "17-19 year olds" if I may quote...this is pretty damn good. Why dont you get off your retired ass, and direct a choir with some of Bach's works...since you seem to be the 'expert'. But that is asking too much...right?
Excuse me Mr Masters and artist in retirement. Before you go throwing around degrees, I think you should check out Paul Laprade's (of RVC) degrees...He has at least 1 masters, and a doctorate, and continues to broaden his education. I also remind you that I have actually been to "live" preformances of this group, and thus have a more perfect understanding of the horrible acoustics of the preforming room in which they preform in, and yet despite that drawback, they continue to do amazing work.
Well, I listened all the way to the end this time, and do wish I hadn't! Look at the other opinions on this performances, they are divided to say the least. You cannot blame the intonation, the wragged entries and the dancing on the accoustics. Defending mediocrity will ensure that your level of performance will never approach Mr Bach numenal imagination.
Wow, harsh YouTube audience..I'm not seeing period instruments so vibrato is fine for me. Who says it has to sound like 1637? Last I checked my calendar it said, "2008". There are authentic period performances out there, go find them. This is not meant to be. I've heard Bach on Accordion and it sounded great. Is that a "period instrument"? Get of your conceited high horse and be grateful groups working hard like this are continuing to bring this beautiful music to the world.
Phuckmycuntt has hit it spot on. this performance blows chunks. No attention to dynamics, vibrato everywhere, continuity destroyed, the choir needs to learn how to stand still, no ornamentation, overall it is crap stuff. They need some lessons on pitch, dynamics, intonation, interpretation, baroque music in general, then they can think about performing this. total shite.
Sounded a competent performance to me. I've heard worse German pronunciation from e.g. University of Illinois choirs, and at the Boulder Bach Festival in Colorado. Yeah, you're not going to get the full Baroque treatment here, but there's something about a live performance... see, this is a recording of something that one should have seen and heard in person -- or sung in. Perfectionists will find things to criticize, but it's good to see SOMEONE is performing Bach's cantatas.
There is always some disatisfied loser who goes around and posts insults about groups and stuff, and phuckmycuntt is one of them...Obviously he never made it to a live preformance of this...and is his rantings are laughable. Rock Valley Chamber Singers are an amazing group, and this recording is a gem; I have been to several other preformances featuring them, and I enjoy their dedication and high level of musical quality.
As a recorded artist now in retirement, and a masters in music I think I have some understanding. By the way my dissertation was on the harmonisation of Bach chorals, so I guess I can claim a passing knowledge of Mr Bach's work.
I always give praise where it is due. This choir's total incompetence is lamentable, but not wholly their fault. The choirmaster should never have allowed them to perform, let alone be recorded here. It is grossly inept. I am only too happy to point the finger.
Utterly hideous. Tuning is laughable, someone tell the choir it is not a dance, the accent grates, the soloistat least has the sense to hide her face behind the music, she does not want the squawking to be associated with her, very wise. Completely tedious, did they rehearse, it would be amazing to practise being this bad.
This is a choir at a community college composed of mainly 17-19-year-olds. I find it odd that someone with as good of taste as you must obviously have spends time cutting down kids interested in the arts on the internet.
I do not blame them for their gross ineptitude, rather it is the choirmaster who is at fault. They are under-rehearsed and should not be exposed to the public. He clearly has absolutely no feel for Mr Bach's music. Maybe they should aim for arrangement's of contemporary popular music, where they could get some easier success.
@glitteringinsanity wow.... tuning is fine in the girls, i mean- the sopranos are really vibrato heavy, and the altos could use a little more and would also do well to sing with a darker tone, but the girls are fine most of the time. the guys, however are upsetting for me, being a tenor. the tenors are very hard to hear, and the basses betray their age with their voices. the soprano solo could definitely have used better rehearsing, otherwise it was about 80% solid, i'd say. (the solo)
Horrid utterly horrid, tedious, hopelessly recorder, with tuning difficulties, did they rehearse at all. Mr Bach would turn in his grave. For God's sake someone tell the choir it is not a dance. Good to see the soloist has the sense to hide her face behind the music as she squawks way through. I never made to the end it was too hideous..
interpretation is too legato and too romantic for the baroque period, top viols overpower the rest of the continuo. The ladies are very shrill with way way too much vibrato. Could be a better blend of voices. Nach - dir there should be a small but distinct break between these two words with the octave jump in the opening vocal motive. Could be much better if singers wouldn't approach this cantata so heavily. opening of the last movement could move more freely. my humble opinion....

We sang this just a few weeks ago, and I think these people did just great! The bobbing was kind of odd, but no big deal.
