Goldfish easily live for more than 10 years, your fish weren't old or over grown, so they probably did die from the effects of overcrowding. If they lived in a pond, it's quite likely they would live for over 20 years.

When this was taken I had 4 fish. Now I am down to 2, the biggest ones are all that remain, the other 2 have died. Not as a result of overcrowding, but old age. I have had them since Fall of 04.

Your tank looks cool. But is not cool because it's to small for that many goldfish. Try upgrading and making it even better.
