They were unstoppable at this time. I was fortunate to catch several shows soon after this one, including 11/30/94 and 12/1/94 which are now Live PHiSH releases. What a mind-blowing time!
I saw Oysterhead at the Hill Auditorium but I would have rather saw Phish there. I just love that were in Michigan while this video tape was being filmed. But it makes me sad that don't have this much fun in Michigan anymore. Come back!!

someday i may tell, the tale of ?tangle when into you your world i fell. anybody know what song this is from? i know i recognize it but i just cant place it.... mike and trey were singing it right there at the end.
that just made me so happy. If I had to convince a non phish-head that phish was the best band ever, I would show them this bluegrass set of videos. It really captures the whole like "phish as a spectacle live" or like the "these guys are incredible musicians" thype of thing
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Im a phish head, and these guys might be awesome musicians, but lets not forget they did have to HIRE Rev. to teach them bluegrass. Bluegrass consists of 3 root chords G-C-D. Non the less Phish is great
Trey admitted he didn't even care for bluegrass early on, but respected it. As you can tell it grew on him and you can even hear glimpses of it throughout their vault of music
well.. .lets not over simplify blue grass, there are a lot of secondary dominants and cool chords changes and most importantly the extreme rhythmic complexity and tempo!
I play bluegrass music and I really love Phish. I have always been ambivalent about their bluegrass stuff. But I have to say this video heartens me about their sincerity. Seeing Mike try to play the banjo and being so utterly BASIC in it--it makes me feel good about my own skill. He is quite competent on the bass, no doubt about that. This stuff is great.
Sorry but I agree, post 99 phish is a shadow of what they were. I'm sorry but being a phan doesn't mean I have to check my ears and brains at the door. People grow old, even the people you like the best. Unfortunately that often sabotages skills and post 2000 ( 99 actually ) phish shows are no where near as explosive as prior years, especially 95-98.
i know what you mean, but i just saw them 6/18/2009 and that was fuckin explosive, trey's sober now maybe that was it but they blew away anything i've ever heard them do. The cool thing is you truly can compare, because on their website you can download their full concert from that day or from many concerts through the years. the show on 6/18/09, download that and tell me they don't sound as good as ever.
Look I have 1000's of hours of Phish that I listen to on shuffle every day. Don't get me wrong, I completely get down to 99-00 jams such as the heralded 2000 back on the train.Hmmm, ok let me put it this way, if I am having a good night, feeling good and I am looking for a specific phish jam that will set it just right, 4/10 it will be 97/98.Those two years the poignancy of the band was right on point. Also they were just more fun in their prior years. Look up youtube vids of the first antelope.

I think Trey generally nailed the flatpicking parts. His rhytm isn't go-awful, it's just a little less than it could be, with no bass runs. It's in there though. I'd let him play guitar in my band....
Jeez.... I wish I knew what I wrote. It must have been pretty offensive, so I apologize for that. I really love Phish and listen to them probably more than any other band right now.

Jeez, I really hope you guys aren't seriously critiquing their "true bluegrass skills". You've got fishman on mandolin and page on bass?!? Just appreciate the balls they had to even take this experiment on. This truly encapsulates the curiosity that made them so great. Thanks so much for posting this jlaughli.
