However, that is not to say that we shouldn't try ot make sure that educational, health and security standards are maintained across all areas of a country so that everyone does have an equal chance and isn't just a victim of random chance. If schools attended mostly be white children get better facilities than those attended by other ethnic groups then that is an issue.
10,000 dollars per student, that's how much we spend in the inner city...private school kids with better facilities and education get it done for 3000 dollars per student.
In other words, if you encourage better facilities and opportunities to kids in inner cities now, coupled with help for families and the social issues that exist in large urban areas, then eventually the cost will come down. As you point out, once those things are in place you spend less than half the amount. You can't just look at a figure without studying the context.
The price is not driven up by poverty, it's driven by a cartel of teacher unions, private schools in appalachia cater to a public as riddled with social ills as the inner city and they out perform every urban school at 3 grand per student.
Wherever you live, to be able to send your child to a private school requires a lot of background stability and relatively privileged circumstances. People who are truly in the grip of serious social problems don't send their children to private schools, they simply can't, so there's no point pretending that they offer a solution. Unfortunately for our tax bills democracies depend on an educated electorate, and we have to guarantee that as children going through the system are future voters.

How on Earth is a voucher system going to guarantee every child a decent education? You'll have to staff the schools for a start, using the very teachers you attack.

What about the white slaves? I think much of America either forgets or isn't taught about the enslavement of white people in this country. Do we hear from the descendents of these people? My great, great grandfather was such when he was brought to America. Should I ask for special treatment/consideration?
"Was" slavery of any race appropriate? Perhaps not, but it was "standard fare" for the time. Thankfully, times have changed.

I looked up the case Ricci v. DeStefano. The lawsuit is over the results of the original test, where no blacks passed. Judge Sotomayor's opinion was "if (the regular) test is going to always put a certain group at the bottom of the pass rate so theyre never, ever going to be promoted, and there is a fair test that could be devised that measures knowledge in a more substantive way, then why shouldnt the city have an opportunity to see if it can develop that?" i.e. make the test easier to pass.

You're missing one big point about reverse discrimination: Those people in that neighborhood need to have a fireman that is 100% ready, able, and competent to do the job. Lives can depend on it! If they keep hiring or promoting people who are not qualified for whatever reason, then the citizens will have a fire department that is not reliable. Jackie's right: If you pass the test, then you pass it and if you don't, you don't get the job. How is this not common sense?

It's not common sense because you're making a huge assumption; that the test was valid and a genuine measure of competency.
This wasn't the same test that had been used in previous examinations (where there wasn't such a marked disparity in the results between black & white applicants). It was a new test, developed by a 3rd party contractor.
The court decision wasn't to hand over jobs to incompetent blacks; it was to evaluate the legitimacy of the new exam.

From what I understand, the test in the Ricci v. DeStefano case was weighted heavily on a written essay portion, one of the most subjective methods of evaluation, and obviously vulnerable to bias.
This isn't a clear cut case of "smart" white people being held back due to "dumb" black people (at least one of the applicants who passed was hispanic; they weren't all caucasian). Furthermore, the judgment was merely to revise the test without so much emphasis on the essay.
Sounds reasonable to me.

Absolutely correct! That's why I'm very concerned for the USA if you think Mr Obama's socialised health care is going to be some sort of an improvement. We've actually had an international charity offer to do cataract surgery for free - as if we were a 3rd world country - because of the huge waiting lists. People regularly die waiting for hospital beds. It regularly takes a couple of years to receive surgery. This is a so-called modern country. Barbaric!

Probably your best vlog yet. Positive discrimination is not really delivering meritocratic equality, as you rightly point out. However, that is not to say that we shouldn't try ot make sure that educational, health and security standards are maintained across all areas of a country so that everyone does have an equal chance and isn't just a victim of random chance. If schools attended mostly be white children get better facilities than those attended by other ethnic groups then that is an issue.

In other words, if you encourage better facilities and opportunities to kids in inner cities now, coupled with help for families and the social issues that exist in large urban areas, then eventually the cost will come down. As you point out, once those things are in place you spend less than half the amount. You can't just look at a figure without studying the context.

Wherever you live, to be able to send your child to a private school requires a lot of background stability and relatively privileged circumstances. People who are truly in the grip of serious social problems don't send their children to private schools, they simply can't, so there's no point pretending that they offer a solution. Unfortunately for our tax bills democracies depend on an educated electorate, and we have to guarantee that as children going through the system are future voters.

The public schools are not suffering from a lack of funds, the public schools are suffering from a stranglehold of teacher unions, and leftist social engineers..the two things private schools do not have. It's called vouchers. That way any kid can get in those private schools.

There's a great number of people who don't make even £30k p.a. In the UK, the starting salary for a teacher is between £16k-£18k, pitiful considering you have to go through four years of University to qualify. Headteachers and Heads of Dept. are well paid, but it is really unfair to claim that teachers on the whole are greedy. How on Earth is a voucher system going to guarantee every child a decent education? You'll have to staff the schools for a start, using the very teachers you attack.

They won't have to staff the schools with the teachers (unions) I attack, because private schools don't HIRE union teachers, they'd be stupid to, and if the teachers want to work for the private schools they have to give up the union. Excellent, this way if they fail they're fired, crazy, fired etc. Clean, passionate professionals will rise, competition in education will refine the system as a whole, a kid takes a three thousand dollar voucher,any kid,and goes to any priv schl he wnts.

Unions don't stop teachers getting fired. The unions are just there to try and attain acceptable pay and working conditions for their members, as well as in some cases a political voice. A teacher who is in incompetent will get sacked regardless of whether they belong to a Union or not. Also, if every child was to be educated, there would have to be a hell of a lot more private schools and larger classes. How can you guarantee standards would be maintained?
