I read from an online interview that Win Butler said that he smashed that guitar because it had been giving him problems. I think he'd been using it for a long time. Strings were breaking during performances and other things, so he decided to get rid of it in style. I'd say he put it out of it's misery!

@Cacabambolade Not planned at all. His string broke at one point, and that's extremely annoying when you're playing guitar. like a small but very painful paper cut...I guess that's why he broke the other strings at the end and then smashed the guitar. Halfhearted maybe, but he was obviously tired.
