  • Great Big Sea: the best live band around today. They've got an amazing energy onstage.

  • Best. Song. Ever.

  • @superbanshee666 You think you're smart just because you're insulting bands? If you don't like something, then here's an idea for you: stop watching their videos, and stop insulting everything by them. They do write originals, but maybe you're just too brain dead to find them. You want to be cool? How about do the rest of us a favour and shut up!

  • @superbanshee666 superbanshee's a bitchy little hipster that probably doesn't even know how to scribe a treble cleff. Nobody's impressed by this twit.

  • oopss I mean genuine!! LOL

  • Excellent, raw music with a variety of instruments...none of this cheatin computer wizardry to make a band look better than they are, GBS is genine.

  • alan doyle is a sad excuse for a singer

  • I'm an American born and raised. My grandmother was Canadian and my father recently got his dual citizenship on that basis with the revision of citizenship laws a few years back. I am so jealous of him.

  • @07foxmulder ...no.

  • I'm from the midwest USA, and I have to say I feel so sheltered and ignorant of worldwide music. The crowd looks filled with people my age and I have never heard anything like this before. What are some other good "upbeat" bands from other countries??? please educate me.

  • @OmegaSuperman Look up Spirit of the West-Home For a Rest...best drinking song ever!

  • support N E W F I E talent plz suscribe and check out my channel 709

  • I live in Washington, but I'd love to go to Newfoundland.

  • Sorry for being ignorant but where is Newfoundland? (Enlishman here)

This is basically Irish folk so I'm guessing there is a big Irish heritage there?

  • @jammymoore go on google maps head due west can't miss us! We're the most easterly point on North America. HUGE Irish/English heritage here, we were a republic of Briton til 1949 when we joined Canada as the 10th province.

  • @uglee555 Awww that's really good. So all the old folk in Newfoundland are basically British then? It's great to see people outside the British Isles who have a good respect for proper old fasioned good music! I come from a really rural part of England (Furthest county North West), so there is a strong loving of this music. My respect goes out to you Newfies then, sound like a great bunch! =D

  • sean mcann wants to be a SUPERSTAR hahaha / good luck with that haha. the moron can't write one good original song. / but he proclaims he wants to be a superstar hahahah f n funny.

  • Great song! This live version is better than the album one. Great Big Sea at their best.

  • buddy im from nfld and i is right proud

  • 20 people have no taste in music!!

  • @SuperSmokinGanja i know man!!!

  • Thank god for all the Murphy's in this world!!! i come from a long line of them & won't give them up for anything in the world. They are the best family one could ever ask for. We are well over 250 & still going strong & we all like each other.

  • PASS DA SALT B'YES

  • The Pogues are the best at singing this song. / Shane macgowan and the Pogues are the best Irish/party band you'll ever see. / macgowan is a rocker who drinks a bottle of whiskey on stage. / Alan doyle has a cup of tea before he mutilates a good irish song .

  • majority of newfoundlanders speek with a full south of ireland accent its great more of the worlds elite IRISH

  • Hey danced my butt off to Great Big Sea last weekend in St. Vincents St Mary's Bay. I've lived in California for 26 years never forget how to jig. Partied with my Aunt Peg and my favorite first cousins, if you don't have a good time with them it would be your own fault. Came home with shinsplints LOL

  • @newfie0217 I agree... if you don't have a good time at a Great Big Sea show, it's you, not them!

Although having so much fun that it hurts is something new for me. lol

  • love the song

  • I hope my friends will send me off the Patty Murphy way when my time comes!

  • How is Miley Cyrus in the suggestions?

  • These guys are awesome! Seen them live 3 times now, once in Ottawa and twice in St. John's!!!

  • Saw them live in Toronto last year 2010 fab show and love this video.

  • Thumbs up if you're from the Maritimes!!

  • Canada :)

  • I'm from ontario..and drank with some Newfies out west...they party hard till the sun comes up singing all night...good times. Next trip out east..can't wait

  • There is a town and an island in NFLD with the name Dildo.

  • @fattttas yeas an theirs a queer named fattttas on youtube

  • @fattttas Problem?

  • you must be dead if you don't like this song - it's awesome!

  • Does anyone know the name of the tune they play during the break between the third and last verse? Sounds like maybe a polka or a fast hornpipe?

  • nix geht übers original !

  • I've looked all over Wal-Mart for this album, but no luck.

  • @GunBigotHater try looking in the electronic department, you will have no luck looking in the sports section.. ;)

  • @GunBigotHater Oh How it sucks living in a small town with only a Wal-Mart to provide your musical needs. My local CD shop closed a few months back, :(.

  • @GunBigotHater I'm Canuck but live in Australia. I just bought 5 albums today off itunes. Smashed ass fuck today dancing around my flat like a jackass!

  • @CDNSMOKEJUMPER flat ??? wtf we don't call them that over here in canada u been away too long .lol

  • you b'ys are a party. nuff said.

  • I wish I was from Newfoundland, BC seems so dosile!

  • @mtrenchfan - Meh, I lived in Newfoundland for 19yrs. It wasnt that great at all. Maybe if youre 60 and retired its great.

Been living in Alberta for 4yrs and I love it. I take summer trips to BC with my dirt bike hitting trails along the way. Nothing in NFLD besides some scenery. St Johns is the only worthy place on the island, while Musgrave Harbor, in my opinion, has the nicest beach on the island.

  • Wish I could rock the accordian like him...

  • Can't help but love this song. GBS, the best live band around today!

  • anyone else lustin' after the guy playing the mandolin, or is it just me? :D

  • @acceptance91 his name is Alan Doyle and yes every time i watch him perform :D

  • like if you agree that the base player is f-ing sexy!!!!!!!!!

  • This song sucks after 3:32

  • That's exactly how I want it to play out when I die.....party all night

  • @nickatnite6969 are you from Newfoundland?

  • @newfieboy2010 I am from Nova Scotia but live in Ontario as I am posted here with the Canadian Forces. Although I am from the mainland, I have nothing but respect for Newfoundlanders and I haven't met one that I didn't like!

  • @nickatnite6969 It is good that you show respect towards Newfoundlanders, and i'm glad that you see them for who they truly are, caring, and hospitable people. The reason i asked you if you were from Newfoundland is that when a lot of people say the term "Newfie" and they aren't from Newfoundland, it is often said out of disrespect. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to explain what you meant by it. Good luck with the Canadian Forces, I wish you the best :)

  • @nickatnite6969 I too am from NS and have worked in NL many many times, the greatest experience i've had...every cottage we stopped into on a Friday night i was offered a full meal...any type of booze, and I was a complete stranger...excellent excellent place to be...the Newfies know how to live

  • @pclle I agree with you. I must say that their hospitality extends well beyond the borders of Newfoundland though. Being in the Canadian Forces has given me opportunity to work with many Newfoundlanders and party with them as well. Couldn't ask for a better crew to drink with!

  • @nickatnite6969 same, im from halifax but posted to edmonton and i got a few newfoundlander friends out here that crack me up

  • @nickatnite6969 what part of Nova Scotia you from

  • @tazdf12 I'm from Beaverbank. How bout you?

  • @nickatnite6969 clicked down sorry it was supposed to be a thumb up

  • @nickatnite6969 ahhhhhhhhhhhh bi she is nice to see u likes islanders ( i am from C.B) but you are still a fawken mainlander ...... haven't met one that i liked , but i agree with ya on the fact that nefies are a nice bunch fawk all u mainlanders wish u was islanders .................LMAO CHEERS

  • Happy St Patricks Day!!!!

  • rip pat murphy..and cheers to you

  • So Whas This " They Winked At One And An Udder ? LOL

  • I respect the band for modernizing the classics, but to be honest, I much prefer the old versions over this, like Ryan's fancy, for instance.

  • @ACDCNut55 Classics are great, but this has the feel and spirit of a wake. You don't need to watch the video to see the grins and winks in their eyes.

  • This whole concert has to be the best show they ever played.

  • 17 people weren't offered drinks when Murphy died.

  • Phi Alpha Paddy Murphy!

  • Paddy Murphy!!!

  • Me and friends have a pact, we when of us passes away, we're gonna play this song and pay homage the the late with a few drinks.

  • @ratherBEaREDNECK I totally would. Don't moarn over someone's death. Life is happy no matter what! Celebrate the dead guy's life! not his death!

  • Damn Newfies, they'll find any excuse to have a brew :)

  • @nickatnite6969 You have no idea! :P

  • @nickatnite6969 don't need an excuse everyone else does

  • @nickatnite6969 lol im part newfie, =)

  • amgine how good these guys would be if they recorded in a studio...

  • i wish they would do a tour of the west coast.

  • This song has two interpretations:

    1) Sarcastically, in a "death of Scrooge" kind of way. "Hooray, he's dead!"

or 2) Let's celebrate in his memory! Drinks all around in memory of Pat!

Personally, I prefer the second. I hope my funeral is like that.

  • @ldcnuke The song is a NewFoundLand folk song. The songs one true interpretation is that they are celebrating that Patty Murphy is finally dead. This is given away in the line 'They said it was a sin and a shame as they winked at one another' also another hint is the putting the bottle with the body to keep the whiskey cold.

  • the good ole days when the band kicked ASS!

  • Seeing these guys for the first time in less than a month from now here in Halifax, can't f***king wait!!!!!!!

  • Man, I sure miss Uncle Murphy....

  • best version is from Fiddlers Green.

  • who was patty murphy?

  • Me and my Cousin sang this song in a pub during our trip to Scotland. Nobody know knew who these guys were

  • great big sea is a fine fine band that thee Irish and thee rest can be fuuuckin proud of

  • Thumbs up if u live in Newfoundland or are from Newfoundland ( i am from and live in NL.)

  • This song will be played at my funeral

  • this is the number one played song at one of my local bars, good stuff I tell ya. People go nuts for it.

  • the lead singer looks like a tool, but good song...

  • just a great song for drinkin

  • somebody needs to put these guys in a movie with adam sandler, john travolta, eddie murphy, bill murray, chuck norris, and weegee

  • How could they diss-respect my Dad like that!!!!!!!!

    ;)

  • Im a metal head from birth to grave, but hell ill listen to this between the way.

  • @REVAN2338

Couldn't have said it better myself

  • The dislike bar is the size of biebers dick

  • @yoko81 why would you remark on the size of a little boys dick? thats disgusting

  • @yoko81 17 inches?! You give the kid WAY too much credit. Like seriously. Rethink that statement.

  • @ldcnuke This is Canada man, we use centimeters here.

  • @Faranya469 17cm is still way too much.

  • @yoko81 justin beiber has a dick?

  • When I went to Scotland a few weeks ago, me and my cousins went into a pub and after a few drinks Me and my Cousin started singing this song. I recommend singing this song in a pub in another country, makes ya feel very Canadian

  • @TAG037 Did they know the song...my brother and I play cletic/folk. Want ot go over there.

  • @TAG037 They had no idea what the hell was going on. They looked at us like a couple of drunks who singing about guy named patty murphy and the night he died

  • My father took his girlfriend to see them instead of me. We have been GBS fans for years, she had never heard of them. I did not speak to my dad for two weeks.

  • How can you possibly not love this song?

  • How can you not LOVE GBS!! They are SOOOO ADDICTIVE them grrreat canadian lads! Keep playin!!

  • perfect song to be bawled when drunk as hell xD

  • @klickthemaster damn your right

  • i heard it in state of play and it sounded great

  • great video

  • Bell Island Thats with a B

  • I just love GBS but this song maybe my fav

  • Uncle louie!

  • ok, really need to get this dvd! Thanks for posting...they just came to Boston, Friday night, and this song was sssoo hard to understand (acoustics and the loudness of the instruments, sadly) .. but those who knew the words went WILD! My throat still hurts! lOVE "THE BOYS"! peace...

  • i love how whenever they introduce each other they say theyre from Gull Island, Newfoundland... the tiny island outside witless bay thats home to tens of thousands of sea birds and no people... its where all the boat tours bring tourists to see puffins... and nobody knows the difference lol

  • @CrashAndBurn35 ive been to over 10 of GBS concerts and ive never herd them introduce shawn as being from gull island, if you listen to alan he says bell island witch is a small island just off the coast of st johns.

  • @rsttrucker he actually does say Gull Island.

  • @CrashAndBurn35 Gull Island is actually also a small community on the shore... named after the nesting island itself, of course. Sean's dad is from there.

  • You don't have to be drunk to enjoy GBS, but as Russell Crowe will tell ya whiskey makes a good thing better 'eh?

  • NOW I WANT BEER!!! LOVE IT!!

  • thats a newfie for ya

  • awesome song...man this makes me drink....

  • love it that o'doyle was in the new robin hood movie too. pretty kickass if you ask me. and this song was also at the beginning of state of play...ANOTHER russell crowe movie.

  • 16 thumbs down are Justin Bebier fans.

  • @scotty4142

Let's be fair. People probably aren't usually sober when they look this song up. The thumbs down button is far too close to the thumbs up button. : )

  • You'll love this too. I can't get it out of my head.

  • Nice, I got the new dvd with this song on it. They just can't sound bad.

  • I never noticed that Alan Doyle sings higher harmony and Bob sings baritone when Sean sings lead, Usually, if Alan sings lead, then Sean is the higher voice because he is the natural tenor.

  • Im a 50 something female from the arse end of Australian, Known as Tasmania and this is the best music for so many years that I have heard. Great Big Sea please you just have to come to Tasmania.....I would feel I had died and gone to heaven if you came to visit us

  • Thumbs up if you think that Sean looks like Tory from Mythbusters.

  • love this song

  • Makes you wonder if they get a little drunk before each show and song haha.

  • Bob Hallett...the only man who can make the accordion sexy.

  • I want to learn to play this on violin

  • i love this song. i don't know many of them, but this one is excellent.

  • I
