@rk140176 actually I am looking at the website and it's after 17 years you reach the top scale... which was 48,000 per year in 2008 up from 44,000 in 2006 and I know about the deductions and cuts since but it should still come in around 800 euro per week

Why were those protestors aggressive to the police of the state. Do they not think the gardai, who put their lives on the line everyday for the citizens of ireland, are also annoyed by the events of the last few weeks. Their wages are being slashed (they never had celtic tiger wages either)- and yet there they are doing their jobs. I'm all on for peaceful protest, that is a person's right - but the ignorance of these protesters is nearly as annoying as the incompetance of FF.

@fleontrotsky yes hand on heart i only take home 400 per week and i have ten years service as a garda ! once a month we get an allowance cheque for sat sundays worked, and night duty worked which works out after tax an extra 100 per month ! as forovertime i dont do it because 1. we get little or none and 2. tax takes most of it so its not worth it. Ther is a severe genuine misperception of what those of us on the front line public service earn ! of course higher ranks take the piss with pay

I'm not defending it, just saying there's only so much you can call a referendum undemocratic. It's by definition democratic. But with that specific example, there were new issues to vote on (legal guarantees).
I'd probably be loosely along Keynesian lines when talking economics. Stimulus packages don't really seem to work well in small open economies like Ireland, money just leaks abroad. My two cents anyway.

True, but that would be pointless without EU membership, which allows entry to an EU market of 500 million (there's free movement of goods and services within the EU, no customs etc).
You're right though, we lose one and they will leave and the EU aren't at all happy with the Corp Tax rate (French calling it "predatory"). Need to protect that just as much.
If we didn't NEED that money, we wouldn't be borrowing it and thus wouldn't be paying interest. We wouldn't have it otherwise!
