Amazing . I so glad tht pizza guy put this out . So amazing how they came together and put a new edge onto folk music . Good music to light and insent and light.... you know wat I mean(:
@chestercopperpot359 Definitely, man! The first time I heard that, I said "YES!" exactly when Jerry did, and kinda chuckled to myself. I tell ya, for a split second I felt like I was right there with him, feeling what he felt.
Thanks for posting..... I have listened to a lot of Jerry Garcia in the last 40 plus years. He can still amaze me with his awesome creativity and his ability to draw more out of a song than anyone knew was there. What gifts the man had. Gone too soon.
Thanks again for posting. It is great to hear ones like this again.
@inlilli1 I don't think that's correct...the group "Old & In The Way" features Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, John Kahn, Richard Greene, and John Hartford. On their first album (also titled "Old & In The Way") I can't find any mention of Tony Rice, although I've found that he contributed some licks to some of David Grisman's quintet.
If you can point me in the direction of some Garcia/Rice collaborations, I'd absolutely love to hear them!
@inlilli1 wow, talk about something that is just completely incorrect. Tony had nothing to do with Old & in the way. They even talk about them getting together for the first time on the pizza tapes
amazing! can still remember the first time i heard the pizza tapes man, this and legion of mary man, best garcia side projects from the dead ever! good post dude
they are called the pizza tapes because they ordered pizza and had no money to tip, so they gave the dude the tape and he lost track of it, years later he found it and sold it...
@nuedair I don't know where you heard that, but none of it is accurate. From Wikipedia:
"Garcia's copy was stolen by a pizza delivery boy and, not long after, Grisman heard a song on the radio in New York. Fans started bringing tapes to Grateful Dead shows for autographs, and shortly after, the band confiscated a box of bootleg CDs of the session.
What makes someone great is their influence, originality and the mark they left, yes Tony is a great player but you are seriously underrating Garcia's wingspan by a LONG shot buddy...
@Ultranothing Sorry, Garcia is just not that great. Not that I don't respect him, but he simply isn't that skilled. Tony Rice, on the other hand...is a phenomenal player. Truly spectacular.
@EpitomeOfBlasphemy It's impossible to say what makes a "guitar player" great. I would say that the only true measure of ones musical "skill" is to gauge it by the impact that person's music has had on society.
And in that regard, I think Garcia takes the cake - hands down.
@jeromekerngarcia "define please? What characteristics make a guitarist 'great'? "
I just found out last night. I was driving into town, and when I turned on the radio (which was tuned to a local college station), I immediately heard just ONE *pluck* of a guitar string; one finger against one fret.
And, as arbitrary and general an action as that may sound - I knew right then, at that very instant, that it was Jerry Garcia. And it was. Not many guitarists with as unique a sound.
@Ultranothing I immediately heard just ONE *pluck* of a guitar string; one finger against one fret.
I know exactly what you mean - Reminds me of riding with my bro-in-law, he's punching buttons on the radio. I hear a >quick< snippet of music and he punches the next button. I say "Go back, that was the Dead!" He says "No way how could you tell in 2 seconds?" "It was Jerry and Phil - go back you'll see." It was "Cumberland" :-) :-) :-)
@EpitomeOfBlasphemy As far as Bluegrass is concerned you may have a point, although I like Jerry's style, simple and extremely melodic; on stage with the Dead it's a different story...on form, a brilliant electric guitarist with a beautifully expressive voice and then there's the songs. It's a matter of opinion in the end.
Whichever one was talking at the end of the recording must have been the stickler of the group. God that guy was obnoxious. Fool has got to learn to play it cool!
@olllHashedFetish jerry, dawg, and tony are all talking. what the hell is wrong with you. the last one to speak on the recording was jerry and all he said was "oh i see".....?
@olllHashedFetish: technically speaking, this was not a recording meant for us to hear... if a pizza boy hadn't swiped Jer's copy & spread it around, this probably never would have been released... it was just a jam session, Jer & Gris were just good about hitting record every time they played... chill man & think of all the b.s. you've ever said at a party... that's what was goin' on here, & we're just lucky to be flies on the wall...
I've got a copy of the tape that was stolen by the Pizza guy and pissed off Grisman/Garcia, which persuaded them to publish the official album, or so is the story I heard. Anyway, there are more words from our idols and several versions of some of the tunes, which seem to have been mixed together for the album. Great stuff! hkhkhmmm no pun intended
yes i have the aibum and theres a lot of writing in it by david grisman explaining the whole thing...pizza boy just jacked the tapes from jerry's counter one evening
ohhhh... i thought they were for real. lol.. it would be funny wouldn't it? i mean they are both old dudes... who no doubt put down a buncha beers befor they recorded.. or weed.. hahahhaha.
It's still a great recording whether Tony farted or not. I just thought I would bring it up because I find humor in farting and it seems like these guys did too. It was probably a real barn-burner too considering all the fuss they made over it. Like true professionals though, they played through the smell and finished the song and I applaud them for it. I personally think he farted. It's a shame it was not picked up on the tape. Maybe one of the players can confirm that Tony did fart.
No, I'm pretty sure Tony farted. I mean everybody farts, why is that so hard to believe? Listen to how Jerry says "hot ones" It's a double entendre. Why would that dude bring up the fact that they used to be called the 'gas'oline brothers? Why would he want him to try to restrain himself from going off and picking some serious shit? He meant for him to restrain his cornhole, not his playing. I think there is enough circumstantial evidence to support the possibility that Tony farted.
My friend explained to me that Tony Rice farted during this. That's why Jerry tells him to try to restrain himself and says I feel we had some "hot ones".
incase some of you didnt know the story of the pizza tapes yes it was when jerry garcia and tony rice met but they recorded their jamming for fun and afterwards they ordered a pizza and the pizza guy found the tape and took it and it was a bootleg for years until they finnaly just made a cd
And at a show a few months later some of the band members confiscated a box of these bootlegs that were being sold at the venue...that's what I've heard.
