  • it is possible for a combination of weed and this music to blow your mind

  • Amazing . I so glad tht pizza guy put this out . So amazing how they came together and put a new edge onto folk music . Good music to light and insent and light.... you know wat I mean(:

  • Yet another filler chat I love from this track is at the end...( Jerry ) " Oh Gosh! Jeeze! Try to restrain yourself Tony! " heeheehee...

  • Pure brilliance...Tony lays down some bad ass lead and jerry acknowledges with a "yes.."..LOVE it....

  • @chestercopperpot359 Definitely, man! The first time I heard that, I said "YES!" exactly when Jerry did, and kinda chuckled to myself. I tell ya, for a split second I felt like I was right there with him, feeling what he felt.

And then I woke up...but anyway...:)

  • Great song! I hate that when I play it people think im playing the theme song to gilligan's island though.. haha

  • strum at 1:58 makes me melt.

  • @monologtube No joke man...Tony and Jerry's styles complimented each other SO much. I catch Tony Rice EVERY time he comes ANYWHERE near me.

  • Thanks for posting..... I have listened to a lot of Jerry Garcia in the last 40 plus years. He can still amaze me with his awesome creativity and his ability to draw more out of a song than anyone knew was there. What gifts the man had. Gone too soon.

Thanks again for posting. It is great to hear ones like this again.

  • its true man

  • this is great and yes i would like to believe that the riceman allowed one to slip during this riveting performance

  • @martinguitar22 Hey, he's Tony Rice, he can pass gas wherever he pleases!

  • wait...what just happened??

  • @ultranothing "This is the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice,..."

no it's not. they were both on old and in the way among other things.

  • @inlilli1 I don't think that's correct...the group "Old & In The Way" features Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, John Kahn, Richard Greene, and John Hartford. On their first album (also titled "Old & In The Way") I can't find any mention of Tony Rice, although I've found that he contributed some licks to some of David Grisman's quintet.

If you can point me in the direction of some Garcia/Rice collaborations, I'd absolutely love to hear them!

  • @inlilli1 wow, talk about something that is just completely incorrect. Tony had nothing to do with Old & in the way. They even talk about them getting together for the first time on the pizza tapes

  • amazing! can still remember the first time i heard the pizza tapes man, this and legion of mary man, best garcia side projects from the dead ever! good post dude

    peace

  • Are you kidding me!!....This is awsome!!...My Grandmother loves it !!

    \

  • One of my favorites!

  • for sure man, i could listen to this on repeat for the rest of my life

  • @atz123ify My friend had a tape of this - we listened to it until the winding snapped on the cassette :) Then I got the CD :)

  • oh my god, that was amazing!

  • @atz123ify Right on, man! People like you are the reason I wanted to share this! Glad you liked it :)

  • yes, yes, yes..two guitar gods together!!!

  • beyond the best, thank you thank you thank you

  • they are called the pizza tapes because they ordered pizza and had no money to tip, so they gave the dude the tape and he lost track of it, years later he found it and sold it...

  • @nuedair I don't know where you heard that, but none of it is accurate. From Wikipedia:

"Garcia's copy was stolen by a pizza delivery boy and, not long after, Grisman heard a song on the radio in New York. Fans started bringing tapes to Grateful Dead shows for autographs, and shortly after, the band confiscated a box of bootleg CDs of the session.

Seven years later, Grisman released the album..."

    Not even close, man.

  • this is my favorite jerry garcia stuff....

  • tony rice Ill never be that good ever

  • @flatopguy Thank you.

  • have you heard him play lead in the dead? his style is his own and unparralled

  • @epitomeoblasphemy dude you are titled to your opion but jerry was is and will be the greatest for years to come

  • @dosed1dosed1000 Better than Tony Rice? What universe are you living in, friend?

  • @flatopguy - Garcia NOT a guitar great....? Wow...!

  • @flatopguy

What makes someone great is their influence, originality and the mark they left, yes Tony is a great player but you are seriously underrating Garcia's wingspan by a LONG shot buddy...

  • Listen to the Garcia/Grisman album, "Shady Grove" and tell me he's not a guitar great, mm'kay? Mmm'kay...

  • @Ultranothing true, but if youre comparing to tony, no.

  • @flatopguy...Garcia NOT a guitar great....? (speechless)

  • @Ultranothing Sorry, Garcia is just not that great. Not that I don't respect him, but he simply isn't that skilled. Tony Rice, on the other hand...is a phenomenal player. Truly spectacular.

  • @EpitomeOfBlasphemy It's impossible to say what makes a "guitar player" great. I would say that the only true measure of ones musical "skill" is to gauge it by the impact that person's music has had on society.

And in that regard, I think Garcia takes the cake - hands down.

  • @Ultranothing then you just called justin beiber a great musician, i am a fan of Garcia, just bein a smart ass

  • @hawvichorst2 Not sure how Justin Bieber's music has an impact on "society". Little girls, perhaps, but not the culture of music as a whole.

  • @Ultranothing well my generation, he's taken over quite severely, very sad

  • @Ultranothing why does it seem like every arguement gets to justin bieber at some point? if you dont really like him why did you bring him up?

  • @beatlesrock354 I didn't bring him up...

  • @EpitomeOfBlasphemy - define please? What characteristics make a guitarist "great"?

  • @jeromekerngarcia "define please? What characteristics make a guitarist 'great'? "

I just found out last night. I was driving into town, and when I turned on the radio (which was tuned to a local college station), I immediately heard just ONE *pluck* of a guitar string; one finger against one fret.

And, as arbitrary and general an action as that may sound - I knew right then, at that very instant, that it was Jerry Garcia. And it was. Not many guitarists with as unique a sound.

  • @Ultranothing I immediately heard just ONE *pluck* of a guitar string; one finger against one fret.

I know exactly what you mean - Reminds me of riding with my bro-in-law, he's punching buttons on the radio. I hear a >quick< snippet of music and he punches the next button. I say "Go back, that was the Dead!" He says "No way how could you tell in 2 seconds?" "It was Jerry and Phil - go back you'll see." It was "Cumberland" :-) :-) :-)

  • @EpitomeOfBlasphemy As far as Bluegrass is concerned you may have a point, although I like Jerry's style, simple and extremely melodic; on stage with the Dead it's a different story...on form, a brilliant electric guitarist with a beautifully expressive voice and then there's the songs. It's a matter of opinion in the end.

  • @EpitomeOfBlasphemy That's blasphemy......oh, I get it.

  • @EpitomeOfBlasphemy

maybe not on studio albums, but there's no doubt jerrys better live

  • @Ultranothing this version's better than the one on "Shady Grove"

  • @lonsumtravlr I CONCUR!

  • @Ultranothing absurd

  • @Ultranothing absurd, jerry's a great

  • @timfootew I CONCUR!

  • ebbene si sono incntrati ed anno suonato alla perfezione######grandi ...jerry ###ed TONY RICE

  • As if!!!! All of these guys are legends now! I remember crackin' this dough in the late 80's at a record store in Santa Barbara! I'm OLD!

  • @4Maxalot me too

  • Whichever one was talking at the end of the recording must have been the stickler of the group. God that guy was obnoxious. Fool has got to learn to play it cool!

  • Besides that it's an amazing take of the folk song. I like how it rolls smoothly with an occasional back-beat.

  • Respond to this video...

  • I think that was Jerry..

  • @olllHashedFetish jerry, dawg, and tony are all talking. what the hell is wrong with you. the last one to speak on the recording was jerry and all he said was "oh i see".....?

  • @olllHashedFetish: technically speaking, this was not a recording meant for us to hear... if a pizza boy hadn't swiped Jer's copy & spread it around, this probably never would have been released... it was just a jam session, Jer & Gris were just good about hitting record every time they played... chill man & think of all the b.s. you've ever said at a party... that's what was goin' on here, & we're just lucky to be flies on the wall...

  • i tried doing that but it wouldn't save as a ringtone. what format did you choose?

  • Norman Blake would approve... sweeet!!

  • This is probably just some spam bullshit, but that actually does sound cool. Thanks bye.

  • I've got a copy of the tape that was stolen by the Pizza guy and pissed off Grisman/Garcia, which persuaded them to publish the official album, or so is the story I heard. Anyway, there are more words from our idols and several versions of some of the tunes, which seem to have been mixed together for the album. Great stuff! hkhkhmmm no pun intended

  • fantastic picking, the song is 3 chords but who the hell can make it sound like that

  • They released a two disc set of these. It's called "Shady Grove". Has a fat book of cool pics and info.

  • Check out "Grateful Dawg" DVD

  • They just showed that on Starz.. Thank the lord for DVR

  • Hey do you have other Pizza Tapes songs? Drifting too far from the shore??

  • wow is there anyone who appreciates the signifigance of this album?

  • Yeah, me! :)

  • The best of all time!! :)

  • YES

  • i appreciates 90% of jerrys work but i love dawg music

  • @oldschoolpunkchris1 only 90%? bite your tounge sir.

  • i only read this today but i had to say how funny i thought it was

  • @BeLa1only no, only you 1only

  • @BeLa1only no one but you...

  • i think you can hear it at 1:12 - 1:14.

i heard that these were called the pizza tapes cause the pizza guy walked in and stole them off the table?

  • yes i have the aibum and theres a lot of writing in it by david grisman explaining the whole thing...pizza boy just jacked the tapes from jerry's counter one evening

  • i swear i didn't hear any farts. hahahahahha hah ah haaaa... yall must be dudes! Maybe they eat a lot of pinto's or something, who knows...

  • there was NO flatulence on here they was discussing the intensity of the song! that would have been funny though...LL

  • ohhhh... i thought they were for real. lol.. it would be funny wouldn't it? i mean they are both old dudes... who no doubt put down a buncha beers befor they recorded.. or weed.. hahahhaha.

  • at what point in the song did he fart?..this should probably be documented...in this age of information.......pphhhllllbbtttt

  • I believe he farted throughout the song. One. Continuous. Unending. Five Minute. Eight Second. Cheese and Curds. Rip Fest.

  • all farts aside,, =P

is this pic the bootleg cover? cuz the official looks different..

  • No, I actually made that one with Photoshop :)

  • It's still a great recording whether Tony farted or not. I just thought I would bring it up because I find humor in farting and it seems like these guys did too. It was probably a real barn-burner too considering all the fuss they made over it. Like true professionals though, they played through the smell and finished the song and I applaud them for it. I personally think he farted. It's a shame it was not picked up on the tape. Maybe one of the players can confirm that Tony did fart.

  • This conversation is so great...I agree farts are, and always will be, hilarious. I think Jerry would appreciate this kind of mindless dialectic....

  • Lol here we have a great proformance and the most important thin we can post is...."Did tony fart?" wow lol i love it!!!!! only on youtube

  • @billkatgeemaildotcom THIS is the highest rated comment? A fart joke?

  • No, I'm pretty sure Tony farted. I mean everybody farts, why is that so hard to believe? Listen to how Jerry says "hot ones" It's a double entendre. Why would that dude bring up the fact that they used to be called the 'gas'oline brothers? Why would he want him to try to restrain himself from going off and picking some serious shit? He meant for him to restrain his cornhole, not his playing. I think there is enough circumstantial evidence to support the possibility that Tony farted.

  • too funny!

  • thats the stupid thing ever, 'he farted'? seriously? he was refering to Tony 'going-off' and picking some serious shit, a 'hot-one'..

  • "that was great, woo... smokin" i think that says it all

  • My friend explained to me that Tony Rice farted during this. That's why Jerry tells him to try to restrain himself and says I feel we had some "hot ones".

  • the gasoline brothers!!! hahaha!!!

  • Your friend is an idiot

  • the audio at the end is possibly my favorite rare hendrix jam, so sad

  • what is it?

  • search on youtube extremely rare hendrix, should be the first one, instrumental. Ive got an improv cover of it that i think is second.

  • Thanks for posting stuff like this. This is a dieing form of music and to have these greats collaberating together here is awesome.

  • incase some of you didnt know the story of the pizza tapes yes it was when jerry garcia and tony rice met but they recorded their jamming for fun and afterwards they ordered a pizza and the pizza guy found the tape and took it and it was a bootleg for years until they finnaly just made a cd

  • And at a show a few months later some of the band members confiscated a box of these bootlegs that were being sold at the venue...that's what I've heard.

  • If you don't own the Pizza Tapes, I advise you to get it!

  • Good advice for any fan!

  • Jerry Lives!

  • the "smoking grass boys"....

  • <3333333

  • I love that "yes" Tony is rippin Jerry is Stoked.

  • I love this song and this version. Thanks for posting! Long live Jerry and the Dead!

  • Yeah, that definitely is a Jerry-ism.

  • This song reminds me of so many summer nights spent with good friends. Thank you :)

  • This song is pleasing to the mind.

  • who says "try to restrain yourself tony" in this? is that jerry or grisman?

  • i think its jerry!!

  • Jerry. Tony Rice is one hell of a player, no doubt. This one never gets old to listen to for me.

  • That's definitely Jerry

  • wish to see here on youtube the beautiful version of Jerry and David Knockin' on heaven's door, from Pizza Tapes. thanks

  • Sure thing! It may take some time, but subscribe to my channel and I you'll know when it's up! ;)

  • that's nice! thank you

  • letgoletjerry

  • make that Garcia, Grisman, and Rice... Mr Tony is doing all those little guitar runs, and most definitely worth checking out in his own right... as well as in other Grisman collaborations

  • Who are you talking to?

  • my pappy told me that story, he's a killer bluegrass player. i love bluegrass! :)

  • it's because they got together and had pizza while playing. Is the story I heard.

  • Obi1123, if you're going to visit every one of my videos only to post half-truths and lies, could you at least TRY to be funny?

Garcia's copy was stolen by a pizza delivery boy and, not long after, Grisman heard a song on the radio in New York. Fans started bringing tapes to Grateful Dead shows for autographs, and shortly after, the band confiscated a box of bootleg CDs of the session. The session was released for public sale a few years later.

  • Great Great Stuff ty vm

  • peaches in the summertime, apples in the fall

  • if I cant have the girl I love, I won't have one at all...

  • Is that how that goes?

  • This is probably the best Garcia and Grisman album.

  • This and "Shady Grove" the album of the same name.

  • I've searched for a while to find this one since I first heard this version - the best.

  • agreed. good stuff

  • this is what i was looking for.

  • See :) I thought so. This is my favorite version too -

    2:05 -> 2:30 - sicky.

  • this is great, i love the dynamics jerry brings to the table...incredible
