@Bballinjosh physics could work just fine. Springboards are held in place, you guessed it, by a very tough spring. It's always tensed. Think of a mouse trap. Normally a jumper only gets back a fraction of the energy in the pushback, which is why they jump higher using it. However, it broke and all of the force went right into the jumper, catapulting him. Kinetic energy can be a bitch.
