theyre pulling the prop through to clear any oil deposited in the lower cylenders. If you dont do that, you have a HUGE chance of blowing out said lower cylenders. The mags and fuel are shut off to minimise firing of the engine
Generalsirdouglas, they HAVE an electric starter on this aircraft. This is done with all radial engines before they start up a cold engine. It is to prevent a hydraulic lock becouse overnight the oil runs into to cilinders at the underside of the engine. This is not dangerous to do. Actually, it is dangerous to dont before starting. Learn about engines before adding comment the way you do. Now you look like a fool to those who know.
@jpsholland This may sound like a stupid question, but i know nothing about radial engines. But if the rings are good how can the oil leak past them into the cylinders?
@themaytagrepairman Piston rings are not fully tight. They must have a small gap which allows the steel ring to expand when the engine becomes hot. Otherwise the cilinders as wel as the piston be damaged when the engine heats up. This gap, when the enigine is cooled down again is enough to leak oil overnight into the combustion chamber of the lower end cilinders. Oil cant be compressed, so when starting without primering the engine lock the piston and bend the piston rod.
umm perhaps the spark plugs have been disengauged so they can turn the engine to clear the oil from the botton cylenders. btw its starts with some complicated intertia cranker

It is needed otherwise you get hydraulic lock in the lower cyclinder as the oil slowly seeps past the rings. Trying to start it would cause damage.
This is all the fun of Radails :-D
Not for the weak softc*#k pilots i work with who only want to fly turbines

Piss on that. I'd have to get an electric starter on that thing. Very dangerous way to prop a plane off.
