  • for a 17 year old, its kinda cool that the first video game I played was the Intelivision.

  • sintermoon can you message me what about the COLECOVISION was a later rip off from the Mattel Intellivision ?

  • I had this console it was my dads this was the best console ever released for its time my dad bout it in 1980 and i had it in 1983 as was born 22 may 1979 the system was beter then any Japanese console it was the best American quality at its best . can you reply to me i would like to chat to you it brings back so many memorys to me . thank you great video .sinistermoon

  • I just got one from a yard sale, 10$ with five games all with original boxes, packaging, manuals, and overlays (what a steal!). The system has few scratches here and there, but overall looks great. The problem is I can't actually play it for a few days because my oldest tv doesn't even support the input, so I ordered an RCA to RF adapter. I'm worried that even though it is in great condition, it might not work since it's just old. Do you think it will work?

  • You lost me when you liked the controller.

  • @klaitu2

How many Intellivisions have you played over the years?

  • @sinistermoon 1 intellivision, and 2 intellivision II's.. and the controllers barely worked for all of them straight out of the box. They became completely useless after you used them for awhile.

  • @klaitu2

They have all worked great for me. And that is out of the box or very used.

  • @klaitu2 what do you do. slam them on the floor? mine work great after all the years my dad gave me mine model 1 and both controllers still work

  • i just bought an intellivision II with the voice module and 11 games for $20. totally worth it

  • Awesome review, you really took us back to the time. :D I'm looking to get a PS3, Sega Saturn, and Atari 2600 sometime in the future but after I get those this one's next on my list. It looks to have a really unique controller, sharp graphics, classic sound, and most importantly a really great and unique library, with games like Snafu, Buzz Bombers, Tron Deadly Discs, Mouse Trap, Space Battle, and Mission X. :D I can't wait to get my hands on this thing, I'm willing to at the most spend 150$.

  • i love/hate this thing, any reccomendations?

  • @rejectofsoul24

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Tron Deadly Discs, He-man, Thunder Castle, Pac-Man, Demon Attack, Night Stalker, all of the Intellivoice games.

  • My first system as well. It was great for it's age, and it is still more reliable then the original NES. But they aren't exactly cheap to pick up anymore. Most of them are going for $100+ on ebay, if you want one that works.

  • The Pause feature was called Intermission Code in the Manual. I still refer to it as Intermission code and not Pause even though it is basicly the first Pause in a video game system. I thinks some Colecovision games had a pause, don't know about the Atari 7800 or 5200 but I do remember the Sega Master System had a pause button on the console. The NES was the first system I owned after Intellivision that had a Pause feature. After the NES every system had a pause button.

  • @dallase1

The 5200 had a pause button on the controller. And the 7800 had a pause button on the console.

  • @sinistermoon

The 5200 had it on the controller? That's pretty cool.

I guess the reason the 7800 had the pause on the console was because it used the same controllers as the 2600 but why couldn't they just make the 7800 controllers look like the 2600 with more then one button and maybe a button in the front for pause?

  • @dallase1

Actually no, the 7800 didn't use the same controllers as the 2600. I mean you could use the 2600 controllers on it to play 2600 games if you wanted. But most 7800 games used 2 buttons, not one like 2600 games. I highly suggest the European 7800 controllers over the American ones if you get a 7800. The Euro ones are more like NES controllers.

  • This is very interesting!

  • oh, you usin a tv with no cable plug? thats wat kind of intellivision my dad has. just hook it up to the tv's cable. oh wait, that other thing you gotta pluig it into. forgoy about that. well you dont always hav to. you might be able to work it but not always. i love intellivision

  • My only regret was that the Atari 2600 was my first console. Pac-Man was the game.

It brings a tear to my eye knowing that I could have asked for an Intellivision way back then, but Pac-Man was the game that sold the Atari 2600.

Too bad the controllers really hurt my thumbs. That was the major downfall of the system.

  • What kind of cable do you use to hook it up to the TV? I bought an Intellivision last year that didn't have a TV hookup cord, so I haven't been able to play it.

  • @mergus

I use a RF shielded cable and the little adapter thing. I will send you a link to an ebay auction.

  • I remember sneaking downstairs at 2am on sat mornings to play my older brothers Intellivision! I think just sneaking around at that hour when I was 6 added to the intense fun of the entire deal! I used to LOVE Advanced D&D, holy shit when you would "hear" the dragons or demons breathing while going through the caves used to terrify me. I just watched a video of that here on youtube and brought back SO MANY memories :)

  • I purchased my first Intellivision last Saturday at a yard sale, I got it for 12 bucks and like 20 games, the games looked like Atari kinda with frogger and all so I cleaned the 30 year old single owner machine through and through with some minor repairs to the joy pads and wholla works like a charm! I just love it so much, now I have it shinned up and inside my entertainment cabinet.

  • The Intelly controllers WERE horrible. The bulk of Mattel's library consisted of adaptations of traditional card and board games, sans for its sports titles. Some were very good. Unfortunately the Intelly library has not aged well. Hardware does not sell software. Once Coleco entered the fray the Intellivision was completely buried.

  • @Kirlian196

They are not horrible. Just because you don't know how to use them means nothing to me. And the Intellivision library has aged well. Much better than a lot of Atari 2600 games. Have you played Baseball or Pac-man on the Atari 2600? Total crap! But the Intellivision's version of both of those games are amazing! The bulk of Mattel's library was NOT board and card games! Do some research before posting BS in my comment section.

  • Both those tiles were redeemed in later incarnations (aka Ms Pac Man). I owned and INTV model 3, as such I do believe that I am capable of making an assessment on the viability of the Mattel controllers. Mattel was delegated to pure leftovers on the arcade front (yes I owned the INTV incarnation of MLB -- it was fair). How is that Coleco completely buried it? It does have it's strengths but the whole story must be put into context.

  • Again hardware does NOT sell software. Initially Mattel made good ground but once it reached market saturation with the sports crowd sports it rapidly ran out of steam. Sports titles alone were not enough to dethrone Atari. Eventually Atari pretty much caught up with titles like Star Gate.

  • i own one but it stoped working a year ago :(

  • I loved the Intellivision the first time around, and now too. Had some great games on it.

  • Glad to hear that this is someone else's favorite console too! It was the first one I owned, and when it bit the dust, my parents bought an Intellevision II for us kids to keep us entertained.

We had everything. The voice module, the synthesizer, and the keyboard computer thing. BUT as some parents seem to do, they got rid of all of that plus the large library of games we had. Still makes me sad to think about...

  • the baseball game for me is still the funnest baseball title I have ever played.

I thought Astrosmash was pretty cool and Snafu was a family favorite. The first two Dungeons & Dragons game was a lot of fun as well.

    ♫ ♪ ♫

  • My first system was an Intellivision II, I have so many memories and stories. I still wish i had mine and all the games(i had a lot of games and a few rare ones). My controllers stopped working and this was long before the Internet and Ebay so i had no clue that it could be fixed one day(Toys R Us stopped selling them and i was clueless). So it was sold at a garage sale. I need to buy another one when i get some money. I have a lot of different systems but the Intellivision will always be #1.

  • Our INTV has been a family affair too. My dad played it so It's what I learned on before Nintendo. We never owned an Atari until I bought a Jaguar, INTV is always fun to go back to.

  • I love intellivision I got mine with ten games for seven dollars yesterday I was so happy to see it for that cheap, and I havent stopped playing utopia, and astrosmash since, I know that this system sold pretty good but what year did it get discounted?

  • Excellent video, i'm subbing!!

  • Too tight cartridge slot? I never noticed lol

  • i'd heard loads of bad stuff about the controller. I have to say, I find it easy to use, I don't even have to put the overlays in to remember the controls!! The wheel is awsome. Only critisism is the pressure needed to press the side buttons, quicly get sore but hey, get sore playing most consoles and for how awsome and reliable and fun this console is, I can easily forgive it that!!

  • I've got loads of consoles and I just got one of these the other day with 23 games. I have to say, it's bloody awsome and is quickly becoming my favourite console :o)

  • well thats not very nice that ur mom just donated ur intellivision without asking

  • Nice vid! It is times like this that i am glad over that i only have 9 Intellivision systems. 8 original systems and one Intv III. And of course, over 200 boxed and complete games.. ;)

  • Very nice! Really enjoyed watching this video. 5 Stars!

  • ColecoVision had some of the same rumours, like the telephone-like controllers that are perfectly fine. The IntelliVision was one of the most innovative consoles of the time! I just wish I had the Original, not the Model 2.

  • i totally agree! almost all the new games for the next gen consoles, such as the 360, are almost all shooters! im okay with shooters once in a while but the intellivision games are all different and creative. i have an intellivision (but it doesn't work) and im biddin on one on ebay.

  • Haha yeah I totally agree with all the games now days being shooters. Right now in my stack of PS3 almost all of them are shooters. Shooters are good but I would really like to see more of a variety. Good luck on getting another Intellivision. You might want to go by shopgoodwill(dot)com if it doesn't work out for you.

  • Excellent review, sinistermoon! I look forward to more Intellivision game reviews!

  • I need to pick up Loco-Motion - I totally forgot about that game.

And I know we disagree about the controller. I still think it's total b.s. and a shoddy design. But it is a great system.

  • do you really need like 20 buttons

  • 16 buttons. I know that is a really big number for an Atari fanboy such as yourself. But when thinking about a PS3 controller it has 16 buttons as well. You see Intellivision was an advanced piece of technology that was too awesome for the standard moron to understand. It is funny to know that after all these years people are still morons. I am getting another 7800 soon. It has 2 buttons!

  • We need you on the front lines defending the best video game system ever!

Here, here! Intellivision was my 1st too. The controller complaints are over-hyped. I think they are great.

Yeah, what's up with the secret santa? No $5 cut-off limit?

  • Awesome vid man! I am really looking forward to the Intv reviews!

  • It's funny how the prices of consoles is still strikingly similar after 25 years. Great vid man.

  • Oh and I agree, I hate when people bash any console. OK maybe some consoles deserve it but as they say "Don't knock it until you try it" that is why I got a CDi recently, many people were like WHY? WHY? It sucks, well maybe it does but until I have tried the system and several games I cannot say. Also, even if a console isn't the greatest I try to be objective and compare it to what was availble WHEN IT WAS RELEASED not judge it by today's standards and even then I still try to be fair/objective

  • I find most consoles are knocked by fan-boys! Personally, i like all consoles as you've said. They're all good in their own way.

  • Yeah...I never had this. I was an Atari Kid. But I may pick one up if I see it. But kids today base their logic on the AVGN's video. go fig...

  • Cool bud. Yeah I obtained an INTVII having never owned one back in the day (though I seem to remember borrowing one for a few days with LOCK N CHASE) I admit it was pretty sweet. Funny how I was interested in it even waaaayy back then because I admit I was impressed by the graphics compared to the ATARI 2600. So cool man that you recognize it's awesomeness. I don't complain about ANY controller man, it just takes time to adjust. Keep up the great videos.

  • Very nice video my good friend. Bring on that INTV lovin.

  • Nothing wrong with tight slot. I remember the Intellivision had great versions of Pac Man and Astro Smash.

  • Mmmm tight slots :D

  • kids on youtube are dumb, they watch the AVGN and think he's serious, so then they try to act like him in attempts to become "cool" or some shit.

  • Sweet. I'd love to get myself one some day, along with an Atari 2600.

  • What happened to the original unit you had?

But people frickin bash consoles Etc. just because they saw an AVGN video and it fucking pisses me off.

  • Breathe Larry... breath... ;-)

  • :D I just hate people who cast their ipinion on a game just because of what the AVGN said.

Look at Ghostbusters, he panned it, but it's not a bad game, I loved it myself as a kid. He just had no clue how to play it properly.

  • You have to realize, as I have when talking to James, he's out to make whatever game/system what have you he's reviewing to look bad, as that is just the style he reviews. Don't get me wrong I love watching his latest releases, but I definitely don't go counting on him for gospel of games/systems, and neither should anyone here.

  • When did you speak to James?

  • I replied to u directly.

  • Did you have B17 BALMER? :D

  • WHAT A SHIT LOAD OF FUCK!

No I don't have B-17 Bomber right now. A great game but right now I have other Intellivision games that I want to get first. Plus I have an Atari 7800 coming in soon so I want to get some of those titles before B-17 as well.

  • The place I just bought the Intellivision II from has an Intellivoice in the box also. I wonder what they want for it as they are usually really good prices and give me a deal (since I keep them in buisness lol) Didn't know about the gold labels is voice. I'll keep that in mind. My Intellivision is WAY tighter than that! That might be a good thing meaning it didn't get used much? My Intelli II is much easier to put games in they actually kinda "pop" right into place.

  • I think you should do a video..."Why the Intellivision is better then the Atari2600 and the Commodor 64" and tell us that it is all ballin and shit....BALLIN!

  • Walla Walla was too lame to carry these. No one even carried games till the NES came out.

  • That's a high roller Secret Santa. This one does get a lot of flack... and I like the controller too. Slot is find too. It makes a lot of sense to model the controller off of the 80's TV remote.

  • I like this system, but PS1 and SNES are some of my favorite systems.

  • Great review, Had a Intelli over here in Blighty back in '82 and enjoyed it esp the "Snafu" game that i think came with the console.

It was and still is a classic console and one i do miss and regret selling.

  • I'm sure a lot of people who bitch about Intellivision only do so because they saw AVGN's review on the console.

  • Yes I hate how a lot of people start to bash a lot of games just because avgn did so. Not all the games he reviews are as bad as he makes them seem. Like back to the future, I actually enjoy that game (the music sucks thou :)

  • cool
