This tune was used in an episode of the famous documentary THE WORLD AT WAR. The episode covered "The Phoney War" along the Maginot Line and Trenet's "BOUMS" were synchronised with film footage of those massive French guns going-off and his "at-at-at-at-at" sound with footage of machine guns. For a moment, the concept of war was quite humourous!
Belle canzoni di tanti anni fa che come :" Paris sera toujours Paris " (M.Chevalier) e " Drei rote rosen " ( L.Andersen) , ci ricordano anche come i nostri genitori si trovassero anche negli anni cruciali della WW2
God, I love Charles! Todays artists should be more like him. You just don't see that kind of class anymore. Besides, he managed to be fun, classy and loving at the same time - a truly remarkable man!
the clock says tic-tac, the birds near the lake pic-pic, gloo-gloo sing all the turkeys, and the pretty bell sings ding-dung-dong. But BOOM, when your heart beats "boom", everything with it booms, and this is love's awakening. Everything has changed since yesterday (= since i'm in love and my heart jumps in my chest, everything/one seems to echo with it and beats at the same tempo). :-)
In Tintin's Land of black gold, Hergé uses this song as advrtising song for a road helping society "boum quand votre moteur fait boum la dépanneuse Simoun viendra vous dépanner" (boum when your motor makes boum -explodes- the tow truck Simoun will come to help you).
Trenet was never as copious as Brel - but at his best his words are at least as good, and his tunes are better.
Between the wars France was in an almost continuous state of anxiety about the possibility of being bombarded by German artillery (as had happened to Paris in WWI). To turn this anxiety into a joke is sheer genius.
In France, there are (and were) really great singers. I really love this song and I recommend to listen songs of Olivia Ruiz. She is amazing. Congratulations from Spain.
@Fourra Who are comparing here? I am only speaking about French singers. From my point of view, Olivia Ruiz is a great singer, are there any problem? Can I express my opinion? I don´t know why I am answering to you, all opinion shouldn't be published.
@MegaDarkness69 It means "boom" describing the sound of the heartbeat of a person in love. You might want to check out the link to a literal translation in the box below the clip. Imho, the childlike echoisms are meant to emphasise the naive, pure aspects of love, as opposed to the you-can-lick-my-lollipop-lyrics of our times...
@brassens66 it is sad, that one year after this, the boum boum boum, would not be from the heart's feelings, but rather from the bombs & the cannonade that would engulf much of the world, & that, one way or the other, have yet to leave Humanity alone...
@brassens66 I wish I was born around the turn of the last century, and know I don't mean 2000 O_O. People were definitely different back then. But I do appreciate and am grateful for having an abundance of food and modern medicine nowadays. That is probably the only good thing about today.
@cacti111 People always need a mix of cosiness and fighting challenge. So in tough times, people were longing for just being nice and warm hearted. But in times of abundance, we admire tough warriors and the cool ... It's in our genes, I guess. We are kind of stupid that way, aren't we? :-)
@DVA5212 It is possible that 'boum' (sometimes spelled 'boom' in French, too - according to Petit Robert dictionary ) for (annual school) celebration came in use only later like in the 1950s. Anyway, here in the song, it's really just like the English interjection Boom! for the sound. No party but a very individual experience of one's heart beat.
@DVA5212 Boum is the word for party used by young people, called so maybe because it is noisy with the music and the shouting of joy of the young people. The word is not new: i am 60 and we used it in my youth (during the sixties). brassens66 is right, there it means what you feel when your heart beats very strongly, especially from pleasure concerning this song.
Me and my brother used to hear this all the time when we were kids (ten years ago) at our Aunty's house in France. Hadn't heard it again before today and now we're all singing along again.
What a fine gentleman and a superstar. Charles was friends with the likes of his U.S. counterparts....Charlie Chaplin and the great Louis Armstrong. Wow!!!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful part of music history with us :) Best, "J "
Ameriican journalist A.J. Liebling visited a French soldiers' Christmas party on the Maginot Line in '39 in an underground bunker, and all the soldiers were singing Boum, pounding on the tables-- the hit of the season.
Brilliant! It is a lighthearted and whimsical song, but Trenet uses to the maximum the natural syntax and rhythms of the French language.
It's about 2 : 30 minutes on any Charles Trenet cd, but in the 1930s, this was a standard duration for songs. And in movies they usually don't play the whole song anyway.
