This is a very sensible video. The visually impaired people can really move on their own, especially now that there are technological devices that are continually being introduced to assist them in their daily. One of which is the availability of cell phones with big buttons as well as screen with bright display and large texts. We market such product and there are already a lot of visually impaired people who confirmed that such phone design is very helpful for them.
to teolin2194 the video was not trying to they are babies...if you watched the video and payed attention is mentioned to only help people as needed!!! that means to let them try to as much on their own as possible but if people did not help them at all how would people get through life they need help at sometimes but this video was teaching people not to over help them.
I don't like this either. My friend walks just fine and blind people don't like when sighted try to ask them if they need help all the time. The thing with handling money was important but the rest was not how it really is. Blind people are not babies!
This is stupid. The first time I watched it, I thought it was cool, but she doesn't even know what visually impaired people are capable of. I climbed Kilimanjaro this summer with 7 other blind and visually impaired people, and that's not even counting what Erik Weihenmayer did, climbing all the seven summits.
That being said, I did like when she secribed the levels of impairment. That's something I struggle describing to people.
I am deaf-blind & use a guide dog and yes hearing dogs/service dog use bright colored vests. A guide dog does not. They only are allowed to ware specialized harness. There are about 20 or so guide dog school in America. I attended Guiding Eyes for the Blind and got a white lab who i love to death.
I wish more people understood that there are all types and levels of impairment and most people find a way to do the things they want with a little imagination and modifications etc.
This is bullshit. We don't need to be coddled like children. Treat us like anyone else. We don't need any special treatment. These people don't know anything. I'm very dissapointed with their perspective on the visually impaired.
This just made me mad. I mean we can ask for help on our own if we need it but we're not completely helpless. The biggest thing I struggle with is fitting in, not with walking or anything this video tries to tell people is so.
Thanks for backing me up. I really hate when they make vids like this. It gives the wrong impression of us and we don't need to be treated like children. We want to be thought of as independant. I'm visually impaired and I can cross streets and ride the bus without any problems. And if someone asks to help me cross the damn street, I'll rip them a new one. cause they should be smart enough to know that visually impaired does NOT mean mentally disabled.
exactly, its a shame that they didn't show the visually impaired actually doing something! when they showed the older lady walking she was barely moving!! Not to mention she wasn't even holding her cane properly!
i agree with you, my name is josh, all my life ive been corrected to(which means with glasses or contacts) 20-200 the i guess limit for being "legally blind" just recently i was diagnosed at 20-100, but i still know the the struggles we all go through i can ride a bike just fine, my friend has trusted me to drive his car, and i did just fine, thethink people need to take a better perspecive on this crap, the video was somewhat informative but the tone was patronizing we are not mentally disabled
I'be been blind since birth. The term "seeing eye dog" is only used for guide dogs that graduated from the school "The Seeing Eye". Dogs from other schools, or owner trained dogs are called "guide dogs" or in parts of Canada "dog guides". Also I was told the dog you show at the crosswalk is most likely a "hearing dog" for the DEAF. I was told it's not wearing a harness but a cape that looks orange. It could also be a service dog, but orange usually means a dog for the deaf.
this is pretty cheesy and inaccurate...coming from someone who is visually impaired

The visually impaired just can not see as sight people
They could do everything else, but they are lack of opportunity.

"the most basic of tasks can be anything but..." are you serious? do you really think we're that stupid? geesh.
"the biggest challenge that most visually impaired people have is walking..." last time i checked, i'm blind, not paralyzed.
no wonder people think we can't do anything. it's videos like these.

The only barrier that those with visual disabilities have is the ignorance and stupidity of others.

I know a legally-blind woman who has gone to college with a blind cane and Braille! Too bad they don't show THAT in this video!

As far as I know, a "seeing eye dog" is any guide dog for the blind. Not sure about the orange vest.
