Have you considered building a wood gasification stove? ToneWrench has a good video of his one. They extremely simple, and look like they burn fairly clean, but I don't really know. Just an idea.

Have you ever heard of a hand pick? They're not a common tool, but that would be a lot better for punching wholes in things than the solutions you went with. I have an old one that's got the pick head on one side and a hammer head on the other. Comes in handy sometimes.
