This particular greeting was a customary greeting of those aliens which must be pronounced CORRECTLY, or otherwise the aliens would be offended, and it would start a war.

He had to practice for awhile to get this down. In other words, cue cards wouldn't have helped.

This is from the TNG ep "The Big Goodbye." Picard has to speak in some alien's language before they'll speak with the Federation, or some such thing!

Indeed, as a symbol of respect, this race required envoys to say this greeting perfectly before they would even answer comms. As I remember, Picard did - but I still think the aliens should have responded with
