I remember sometimes you would get the odd game (especially copied cassettes) that would not load properly and ended up with either weird looking sprites or the game crashing at a crucial moment even the game not working at all in some cases. Fab machine though - especially the music. I would love to have mine back again after all these years.
I read: great thing about the c64 it was capable of playing music and you could even play games whilst software was loading!
I was like. Yeah, but why isn't there music in this video? Right at that moment, 1:42 into the video, the music starts! Oh yeah, C64 is a bit slower than the PC, I forgot. :D
These were magical times! One thing I don't miss about the C64 days, is the fact that sometimes the games just didn't work. Even newly bought original copies.
I used to have this for my Commodore. Loved it ! I have been searching for this music for ages. Loading was a pig on those things. Press Play on tape, go to school and by the time u get back it should have loaded :P
My first computer was an Apple IIc, so I... errr *missed out* on loading tape media to play a game, and judging from these load times I'm kind of glad I did, despite this very cool and excellent loading music.
Thank goodness for floppies (and later on, hard drives). : }
Then you'll never understand what we feel when watching these loaders... also if you didnt want it to load you could just fast forward the tape and you would be in like level 10 or so.
Yeah I hear ya, I could totally understand how this feature would be looked on with nostalgia by many. The music was certainly awesome, that's for sure! I am merely looking on it with eyes filtered with modern conveniences.
I didn't know that about hitting Fast Forward. Pretty cool. : )
Originally wayyy back in the day I was used to the ZX spectrum, and soon as i saw that message ensure you stop the tape between each load i Did! between each gap in the data! Why they put that message on their is beyond me anyway...
because this game and many others the datasette was computer controlled anyway and the datasette stopped on its own without any human intevention at the right places!
is that a VIC bug that they had to chop the screen to do the scrolling? in fact I noticed on many C-64 scrolling games that the screen area is somewhat reduced
Damn I forgot just how long these games used to take to load! Funny thing is somehow the catchy loader tunes on various games (Ocean's were always best!) made the wait bearable.
Scary just how much everythign has moved on since I was a kid.....nooooo I feel old now :(
I'm in the US and when I got my C64 as a Christmas present, I also got a datasette with it. I owned exactly ONE commercial game on tape; Zaxxon. It took 15-20 minutes to load and failed half the time. As soon as I got a disk drive, the datasette was tossed in a box, never to be used again. How anyone could put up with those loading times is beyond me! I even bought a Fastload cartridge to speed up disk loading.
This was also the loader tune on Batman the movie, one of my favourite 64 games. I think the was a similar tune on robocop as well. Awesome times that i will always remember. I remeber playing the hollywood collection, lotus and midnight resistance to death.
Lol all you guys are forgetting one vital about these ten minute to load games!
The girls in your lives love them lmao!
Think about it, your partner wants you to cuddle up to her when you are doing some hardcore gaming, pop in a disc into your daystation and your good to go, and your girl goes in a humph
These old games at least they get a bit of playing beforehand so it keeps her happy ha ho
I remember getting the Wheels of Fire compo- and the likes of Powerdrift was good, but Turbo Outrun OWNED them all!
I agree with the negative posts about this game- I loved the arcarde version, and it was damn good on the Spectrum too. I remember playing the speccy version, boasting that the c64 version would best it in every way.
Then, after finally getting it,the joke was on me- what a shite conversion!!:L
I agree with illman74 - the c64 conversion of this game was dire, to be fair this loading sequence was the best part of the game! Wheels of fire the c64 version wasnt worth the cash even though the c64 version of turbo outrun was mind blowing in terms of intro
yet it needed to be on a c64 with the right sid chipset :O
It's such a shame Chase HQ on the C64 was so awful. What a waste of a licence. It could have been the best of them all, but it seems like they ported over the Spectrum version for some reason....I still remember the disappointment I felt at the time. Thank God for Powerdrift and Turbo Outrun. The music brings back memories. Wonderful stuff.
This music brings back memories for me from when I owned a c64. Although most Ocean games were crap.
Incidentally do a search for Keith Chegwin. There's some old TV footage of him at Ocean Software. You'll be able to put faces to some names. Mark R. Jones, Gary Bracey, Dawn Drake, Dave Collier, Johnathan Dunn, William Harbison.
head over heels loader ready for upload give me a couple of days from the date - 15-october 2007 - will be with you no later than 17th its already on my hd as mpeg just got to get it optimised for youtube flv

i tell theee - why does that message appear at the bottom before the loading screen - the datsette stopped on its own - its a load of shit i tell thee
Thats about as good as this version got, after the amazing title screen you're greeted with the most piss poor conversion of the game known to man! The spectrum and amstrad versions were WAAYYY better than this!

Great memories (up until it loaded).
Awful, awful port.
Ocean really were bellends when it came to the c64.
Thank God System 3 (now THERE'S a decent publisher) released the magnificent Turbo Charge a few years later.
