It just doesn't get musically any better than this....
...my many heartfelt thanks go out to Planxty, to Christy, to that wonderful Irish crowd, to lustfor life358, I will be eternally endebted to you all.
Fantastic track and a great performance of it. I presume the lyric sheets Christy found must have been too Matty Groves. Or indeed, the one Any learnt from Nic Jones. Either way, its a cracker.
God I could weep when I hear these lads perform their magic(again and again)
I mean this piece is musical history-yes its THAT BIG) its only been clicked ninety seven thous. times and Lady F'ing Gaga a couple of million clicks, where is the musical comparission? Especially considering that I have personally clicked this piece of poetry at least two thousand times myself (and am still drowing in admiration every time I hear the voices, the harmony, the stillness of the crowd-Irish & Proud of it
My dad grew up with Christy, Donal and Liam. He bought this DVD and cried his eyes out watching it. I only saw Christy play for the first time at home in Newbridge a month ago. I was blown away.
This is excellent. Touching and sad, made particularly haunting with some well placed whistle/ pipe solos. One thing that could have added something to this would be a short (30 seconds or so) instrumental by Liam with the whistle.
the illen pipe solo in this sends shivers down my spine every time i losten to it absolutely amasing group loved watching these in dublin one of the nicest gigs ive been to
From the very first words we sense the tragedy unfolding. Look at Child Ballad 81 for what we think of as the original versions - but how old is it in truth?
I absolutely love this tune, thank you so much for posting it! I found it by a mistake, and fell in love with it, the lyrics are so beautiful. And he has a really nice and strong voice.
The Irish must be proud...a truly GREAT band, they inspired me to one of my paintings (the Well Below the Valley)...can see it as a background on my homepage if at all interested...BUT the subject is the earthiness and wonder of the great Planxty! Thanks so much!
I was hoping to set Nic Jones' version of Little Musgrave as a video response to this, so people can easily explore different interpretations and performances of this ballad, but I think I have already send the video response request a while back, but apparently you haven't accepted it?
@mossie2644 Yes, he did do this song, and very good at that. You can find it on my profile (or just search youtube, you should find it). A duo with Nic and Christy on this song would be sweet... but unfortunately Nic doesn't (or can't) play anymore.
One of the most enchanting songs ever performed. Every time we hear it, It reminds us of our wedding. Honeymooned in Clare. The greatest place on the planet and that's coming from 2 Dubs. God Bless you Christy
I am an atheist but God bless Planxty. Lovely performance. Donal Lunny should be given a nobel prize for services to music. I know it doesn't exist but...
I may, usually, I perform it with three people..he narrator/Lord Donald (as I call him), his wife, and Mattie groves. It changes keys between the dialogue and the narration, so it would take a while for people to learn it...
Little Musgrave es un nombre propio, la canción trata sobre Musgrave que era el personaje principal. Musgrave se acuesta con una mujer casada y lo sorprende el marido y lo mata....aunque en la canción hay muchos más detalles.
God.I @m so lucky.Without gloating or been smug, have been lucky enough to see planxty in 1980, in 2004/5 and Christy about 25 times. Every concert a glorious experience. And it's not all down to Christy; Andy, Liam and Donal are equally, if not more, important.
I heard this for the first time in 1988...an it never fails to make the tears run...i hope to take my wife to see Christy and let her hear that distinctive voice
Thanks guys, fabulous performance! Been listening to the album for 20 years or so now. Saw Christie live in Crawley yonks ago and Liam played at Battle the week after Frayed Knot (my band). We got to chat to him. Nice guy and a truly top player....
planxty's debut album has a great version of follow me up to carlow, .. the battle of glenmalure co wicklow where redcoates got a hiding, from fiach mac hugh o byrne
I have seen this verson replayed many, many times and it still gives me goosebumps. Christie has no equal as an interpreter of great ballads, and what an accompaniment! I especially love Liam's wonderful choruses on the pipes. He is surely the finest vituoso on the Ullean pipes. May they live forever.
yes...this is beautiful version...suggest to also try to find this song as performed & arranged by Nic Jones...you will certainly not be disappointed...i believe it was on his first album..
At 2:25 I'm hearing "Standing by was a little foot page from the ladies court she ran" and from then on the page is referred to as "he" I.e "Everywhere the bridge was broken he'd enter the water and swim"...
I could be wrong though and I'm not complaining it's just an observation. I still listen to this about once a week :D
There wasn't just a 'tune' they learned, Nic never played or recorded just a 'tune'
The guy in the band had Nic's album with the song and the tune on it - in another concert Christy says they listened to the album 'on safari' through the guy's flat but over time has obviously shaped the truth into this half-truth.
If you've never heard Nic Jones' 'Musgrave' then you obviously don't know what you're talking about.
Mighty dismissive, aren't you, rogthedodger? Only one interpretation allowed? It's all personal preference and often probably depends on which version is heard first. To me, Planxty's version is so much more nuanced than Nic Jones' version, which I find rushed ... the guitar almost competes with the voice. Just because somebody likes something you don't doesn't warrant a "you obviously don't know what your'e talking about." Ease up.
This song could go on for an hour and I would still love every second - it is indescribable no word is good enough - I would go as far as saying it is the greatest song ever written. So good post then!! 5*

Poor, cliched and painful.
A cod 'oirish' work-a-day version of the song - listen to Nic Jones to hear a far superior version.
Christy's not being entirely truthful in his intro, they obviously thought they'd cash-in and 'improve' Nic's version and came up with this dross.
Nic for Musgrave, Sandy for Matty, no need for this.
rogthedodger 2 years ago
Actually I was being too kind.
Christy stole this from Nic's version.
There wasn't just a 'tune' they learned, Nic never played or recorded just a 'tune'
