  • That lord Barnard is only a bollix , cracking song

  • Ceapeann go bhuill an ceol seo go hiontach. My ear's dance upon the stanza and I love you little musgrave and ner a word did say.

  • beautiful, dancing ,sweet , passion , words and music

  • It just doesn't get musically any better than this....

...my many heartfelt thanks go out to Planxty, to Christy, to that wonderful Irish crowd, to lustfor life358, I will be eternally endebted to you all.

  • Fantastic track and a great performance of it. I presume the lyric sheets Christy found must have been too Matty Groves. Or indeed, the one Any learnt from Nic Jones. Either way, its a cracker.

  • Absolute class.Many thanks.

  • LORD BARNARD

  • @MaxWilliamsBristol BERANNARD

  • top top tune

  • My all-time favorite ballad - in its best rendition. I listen to it since the late 70´s - never fails to grab my heart.

  • God I could weep when I hear these lads perform their magic(again and again)

I mean this piece is musical history-yes its THAT BIG) its only been clicked ninety seven thous. times and Lady F'ing Gaga a couple of million clicks, where is the musical comparission? Especially considering that I have personally clicked this piece of poetry at least two thousand times myself (and am still drowing in admiration every time I hear the voices, the harmony, the stillness of the crowd-Irish & Proud of it

  • love it :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Just Beautiful!! Many thanks.

  • This is my all time favourite from Christy.

  • first verse: t'dt'd't'd'td'dttd'td

  • 0 dislikes

  • I will never get enough of this! It totally sweeps me away.

  • Give me a Planxty reunion any day over a Beatles reunion !!!!

  • this has to be one of my all time favorites.

  • I bought the dvd and posted to my brother in New Zealand for his birthday.

He said that he cried, as it reminded him of his youth and following planxty

    on gigs in Lisdoonvarna.

This, he said, was his favourite...mine as well.

  • My dad grew up with Christy, Donal and Liam. He bought this DVD and cried his eyes out watching it. I only saw Christy play for the first time at home in Newbridge a month ago. I was blown away.

    I love this song.

  • Fantastic video!

  • Good old Christy, still sweating up a storm

  • great song

  • This is excellent. Touching and sad, made particularly haunting with some well placed whistle/ pipe solos. One thing that could have added something to this would be a short (30 seconds or so) instrumental by Liam with the whistle.

What am I saying? You can improve on Planxty...

  • One of the best songs i have ever heard.

  • one of my fav songs ever

  • I've always loved this song, this is priceless, pure gold

    thanks

  • so simple, but so beautiful...

  • soooo beautiful...

  • beautiful

  • best song ever!!!!

  • I was lucky enough to be at that gig,,pure genius!!

  • Awesome, I think you are great.

I want the wisdom of the Irish

  • Andy irvine on I think a Moon mandolin, lovely melody of chord's and scale's.

  • Great stuff. Nothing like it.

  • the illen pipe solo in this sends shivers down my spine every time i losten to it absolutely amasing group loved watching these in dublin one of the nicest gigs ive been to

  • one of the saddest songs but one of the most beautiful

  • @SemajSattler Isn't that always the way of it though.

  • From the very first words we sense the tragedy unfolding. Look at Child Ballad 81 for what we think of as the original versions - but how old is it in truth?

  • From the very words of this song we sense the tragedy as inevitable. Look at Child Ballad No. 81 for the original.

  • "It seems the same to me, but I'll say nothing"

  • Elvis fuck off

  • One of the best, I LIKE THIS MORE THAN i LIKE SAUSAGES

  • Truly fantastic!

  • Truly fantastic!

  • FAIRPORT CONVENTION SONG LADS C'MON NOW CHRISTIE SERIOUSLY

    OLDE ENGLISCHE VOLK SONG

  • This song made me think of The Shire.

  • What an AMAZING song.

  • Can it get better? And to this rhetorical question is there only one possible answer! No.

  • seems the same to me,but I'll say nothing... 0:41

  • The Little Musgrave is pure joy. Matty Groves is cool but I just love this. Unbeatable.

  • I absolutely love this tune, thank you so much for posting it! I found it by a mistake, and fell in love with it, the lyrics are so beautiful. And he has a really nice and strong voice.

  • Was at one of those gigs...just brilliant! Some musicians!

  • There are several versions of Matty Groves... Joan Baez has a very good one !!..

  • little musgrave......my hero...

  • class, just f***in class

  • Love to sing this song, it's brilliant

  • The Irish must be proud...a truly GREAT band, they inspired me to one of my paintings (the Well Below the Valley)...can see it as a background on my homepage if at all interested...BUT the subject is the earthiness and wonder of the great Planxty! Thanks so much!

  • deadly

  • these bring many great memories when I toured Ireland in the early 70s

  • I was hoping to set Nic Jones' version of Little Musgrave as a video response to this, so people can easily explore different interpretations and performances of this ballad, but I think I have already send the video response request a while back, but apparently you haven't accepted it?

  • @wrongwayup

did'nt know nic did it he's class gonna check it out

would like to c nic and christy do it together!!!...........musical intercourse!!!!

  • @mossie2644 Yes, he did do this song, and very good at that. You can find it on my profile (or just search youtube, you should find it). A duo with Nic and Christy on this song would be sweet... but unfortunately Nic doesn't (or can't) play anymore.

  • @wrongwayup

yeah i know he can't play anymore tragic just dreaming

  • @mossie2644 Yeah, definitely tragic, especially if you imagine what more beautiful music he could have made in the last 20 years...

  • can you send this video to me

  • @Matthewbiggin yes I can pm me your details

  • one of the best songs and best versions of all time

  • One of the most enchanting songs ever performed. Every time we hear it, It reminds us of our wedding. Honeymooned in Clare. The greatest place on the planet and that's coming from 2 Dubs. God Bless you Christy

  • what does he say at 0:41 ?

  • He says "seems the same to me, but i'll say nothing"

  • Thank you. Peace

  • @lustforlife358

"Seems the same to me, but I'll say nuthin'"

A great, great song, and a great reunion DVD.

  • @lustforlife358 brilliant :L

  • @lustforlife358 What did he ask.. to play it slower or change key or something?

  • It seems the same to me but I'll say nuthin'

  • he says 'seems the same to me but il say nothing.'

  • seems the same to me,but I'll say nothing : )

  • @TuretPremer he says "seems the same to me but i'll say nothing"

  • I LOVE THIS VERSION OF THIS SONG

  • One of the songs that keeps me sane in this mad, mad, world

  • I am an atheist but God bless Planxty. Lovely performance. Donal Lunny should be given a nobel prize for services to music. I know it doesn't exist but...

  • @franklymike - totally agree !!

  • @franklymike planxty are pagans

  • he was given a grammy tho!

  • @franklymike ...so am i ..but sometimes listening to christy..or on top of brandon..i feel a presence.....

  • @franklymike It exists, but it's called The Polar Prize. It's ABBA-money that is behind it. :)

  • @franklymike I'm glad that these Guys are proof enough to make you believe in God.

  • @tombnelson nothing to do with God, Their Irish

  • @paulhmull What is that supposed to mean? The Irish have been some of the most devoted people.

  • im a complete metal head but i make an exception for planxty their brilliant !!! vicar street concerts were amazing !!

  • good morning this morning - didellee - Hello there - I'll be back after 11

  • 204

  • If I'm not mistaken I send a video response to this a few days ago, of Nic Jones performing Little Musgrave. I'd appreciate it if you accept it? :)

I tried sending it again, but the video doesn't show up in the list, so that means the response wasn't accepted (yet).

  • You don't see many musicians pour their heart and soul in to their music as these fine men always do.

  • I sing a version called "Matty Groves" which is very similar...a different melody, but the same story.

  • Is'nt "the raggle taggle gypsy" a similar story too??

  • I believe so...similar..buts its a common storyline in old music.

  • will you be posting your version of "Matty Groves"

  • I may, usually, I perform it with three people..he narrator/Lord Donald (as I call him), his wife, and Mattie groves. It changes keys between the dialogue and the narration, so it would take a while for people to learn it...

  • @lustforlife358 Fairport Convention's is absolutely fantastic.

  • @deathbybagpipes Post it!

  • its the name of the man in the song

  • sorry, can any one tell me what LITTLE MUSGRAVE means? I'm from southamerica and i'm not familiar to the word Musgrave

    tks in advance to anyone!

  • its the name of the man in the song

  • @countrydreamer66 its a name

  • Little Musgrave es un nombre propio, la canción trata sobre Musgrave que era el personaje principal. Musgrave se acuesta con una mujer casada y lo sorprende el marido y lo mata....aunque en la canción hay muchos más detalles.

  • Come to Holland soon please!!!

  • God.I @m so lucky.Without gloating or been smug, have been lucky enough to see planxty in 1980, in 2004/5 and Christy about 25 times. Every concert a glorious experience. And it's not all down to Christy; Andy, Liam and Donal are equally, if not more, important.

  • @asburystan lucky...

  • This is incredible. Terrific performace meets wonderful writing in an unforgettable ten minutes.

  • the whore was having sly love with a midnight creeper

  • wonderful - heroes

  • Beautiful rendition!!!!! Doc Watson recorded this with the traditional tune.

  • This is the first song I was old enough to really listen to. I've always loved it. My ma and pa had this band in common when they first met, too.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this

  • i love this tune

    i smoke and listen

  • FAB - stands the test of time!

  • I heard this for the first time in 1988...an it never fails to make the tears run...i hope to take my wife to see Christy and let her hear that distinctive voice

  • don't he'll fuck her while you're out hunting

  • My goodness , just brilliant!!!

  • Thanks guys, fabulous performance! Been listening to the album for 20 years or so now. Saw Christie live in Crawley yonks ago and Liam played at Battle the week after Frayed Knot (my band). We got to chat to him. Nice guy and a truly top player....

  • Andy Irvine's mandolin and Donal Lunny's bouzouki make the make such a beautiful sound together, its like nothing i've ever heard

  • first time I've heard this song , marvellous , just marvellous

  • planxty's debut album has a great version of follow me up to carlow, .. the battle of glenmalure co wicklow where redcoates got a hiding, from fiach mac hugh o byrne

  • I have seen this verson replayed many, many times and it still gives me goosebumps. Christie has no equal as an interpreter of great ballads, and what an accompaniment! I especially love Liam's wonderful choruses on the pipes. He is surely the finest vituoso on the Ullean pipes. May they live forever.

  • This Pipes rocks.....fantastic

  • Pure class .... what else can you say

  • yes...this is beautiful version...suggest to also try to find this song as performed & arranged by Nic Jones...you will certainly not be disappointed...i believe it was on his first album..

  • This is one of my favourite songs and performed brilliantly....I just can't help notice that the foot page in this version changes sex :p

Still the best by rendition though :D

  • No, listen to it again--"he" is a foot-page serving the lady, but he's always a "he."

You're right, I think this is the best rendition.

  • At 2:25 I'm hearing "Standing by was a little foot page from the ladies court she ran" and from then on the page is referred to as "he" I.e "Everywhere the bridge was broken he'd enter the water and swim"...

I could be wrong though and I'm not complaining it's just an observation. I still listen to this about once a week :D

  • It's "from the Lady's coach he ran" ! Get it now??!!!

  • Aha that explains it ^^ I was getting court and coach mixed up thanks :)

  • heard christy sing this at the barrowlands it just blew me away, brill

  • This is unbelievable. What a concert this must have been.

    Thank God for Planxty.

  • Poor, cliched and painful.

A cod 'oirish' work-a-day version of the song - listen to Nic Jones to hear a far superior version.

Christy's not being entirely truthful in his intro, they obviously thought they'd cash-in and 'improve' Nic's version and came up with this dross.

Nic for Musgrave, Sandy for Matty, no need for this.

  • Actually I was being too kind.

Christy stole this from Nic's version.

There wasn't just a 'tune' they learned, Nic never played or recorded just a 'tune'

The guy in the band had Nic's album with the song and the tune on it - in another concert Christy says they listened to the album 'on safari' through the guy's flat but over time has obviously shaped the truth into this half-truth.

If you've never heard Nic Jones' 'Musgrave' then you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

  • Mighty dismissive, aren't you, rogthedodger? Only one interpretation allowed? It's all personal preference and often probably depends on which version is heard first. To me, Planxty's version is so much more nuanced than Nic Jones' version, which I find rushed ... the guitar almost competes with the voice. Just because somebody likes something you don't doesn't warrant a "you obviously don't know what your'e talking about." Ease up.

  • matty groves....

  • just incredible!!! it true, this song could go on for hours!! thanks for posting!!!!!!!

  • My favourite song ever.

  • The Planxty Live 2004 DVD is available for U.S. mail order from Chivalry Music.

  • Thanks

  • This song could go on for an hour and I would still love every second - it is indescribable no word is good enough - I would go as far as saying it is the greatest song ever written. So good post then!! 5*

  • Thanks most kindly for this gem. I only recently had found the audio of Planxty's version of this INCREDIBLE song, which I 1st heard on a John Wesley Harding tribute CD of Nic Jones songs

  • Beautiful. Greetings from your celtic brethren across the watter.

  • more than a state....more a state of mind..one of the greatest concerts ever

  • this is one of my favourite songs. i would play it constantly when i was 16 and sing along quietly. it always reminds me of summer and romance. this was and always will be my preferred version.

  • Thanks mate for this. I've tried to buy the dvd...no luck.

    Great to see this.

  • great song and great story, and ofcourse a fine performance

  • Thanks for posting... great song... missed it.. was there that night

  • Great video. Love Christy Moore's amusing comment at the beginning. Brilliant song and this is one of my favourite versions of it.
