I love Chris Potter's composing style. Heaps of his tunes, like this one has a melody (funky as shit) then overlaps another one over the top of it. Never in 4 haha, and Taborn just plays both at the same time with ridiculous ease! aaah!!
at 06:01 , I like how Craig Taborn talks to Chris Potter and keeps grooving on the fender rhodes at the same time, it seemed pretty easy to do for him. Remarquable independance! :)
New to Chris Potter and his Underground. Man Ive missed out the last couple of years!! And the Drummer!! Get all moist in my eyes listening to him. The groove, the pulse, the beat:)
Man I wish I could groove as hard as Nate in odd time signatures. I think that is why he is such a great drummer, he knows how to keep a groove going and interesting at the same time. I also think that although Tabourn (sp?) covers a lot of the low end stuff on the Rhodes, this band wouldn't be able to groove with no bassist without Nate, he grooves that hard.
@boxing1000 Seriously you call this pseudo modern "bullshit"????? There is nothing "bullshit" about music like this, this is raw talent and hard work put into something these guys love. Auto tune artists you can call bullshit cause they don't work nearly as hard or are as passionate as these guys are. Also you're clearly a music tart cause this is full of melody. You shouldn't even bother airing your opinion on music like this. Its not valid cause you just don't get it.
@Mattyfbinks Oh,I am dead serious..and,sure,it might take a lot of work to sound like this but it STILL sounds horrible. If this is full of melody I am sure you hate Trane,Bird,Bergonzi,Grossman etc guys who REALLY are into melody.
@boxing1000 stop getting stuck in the past, those guys were great, but chris potter and all these new guys are just as amazing in their own way, and they all sound incredible and their all expanding on the base of what coltrane , bird, and bergonzi did. if all artists sounded like the oldies music would get pretty damn boring after about two minutes
this song gets me so pumped! i saw these bitches live in NYC a few years ago, first time i had even heard them ever, creamed my pants and shat a walrus. One of my top 5 jazz bands.
Nate Smith is a perfect example of outstanding musicianship. Even when he's playing a shaker he gets into it! No matter what role he's playing, he does it so passionately.
Today for one of my classes a group played this song and it sounded just like this. I mean not just like this clearly cause these guys are amazing but it was really good. I hope i can be as good as this some day.
few years ago, me and my brother won a backstage ticket for jazz festival in Prague, where he was playin' with his band. Photo with him was the first thing to come on mind :) great playa'!
I think I probably scared my neighbours with my shouts of joy over this song, particularly the end of that spectacular drum solo leading into Chris's!
@heatersax Well, that is his new Gold Plated Mark VI. As for his reed/mcp/lig setup...I can't tell you the mouthpiece. But I know for a fact he uses Rico Jazz Selects. And the lig is a Olegature.
Youtube are becoming video rights monopoly tyrants, trying to control what we watch on the internet is like the equivalent of trying to tell apple that every one of their products doesn't have to be thinner then a paper clip. Its just not possible.
Could you please upload ultrahang played by chris potter on this concert, it used be on youtube, but I cant find it anymore! please, thank you very much
I saw these guys at Monterey Jazz Festival. A lot of people left by the end...
The one's who stayed WERE ALL KIDS UNDER 20 YEARS OLD and THEY WERE DIGGING IT!!!
These guys are years ahead of musically. No one understands them yet. These guys are about as good as anything Weather Report and Miles electronic back in the day (I'm old enough to have seen this shit and I'm telling Potter & Company are the real deal).
@ramonlazotrio ...that was a killer show in Monterey!!!! especially liked that one Adam Rogers tune that Chris announced with "adam calls this...Ripples(actually forgot the title but it was a one word title)."
@TheFusionJunkie It would be awesome if you could upload some more of this stuff. All the other youtube vids on "Underground" are usually bad quality or something.
