Definitely funny, and I also believe if you grabbed people at random from "certain" American streets you'd get a similar response. It really depends on where you are. I don't know if this is an American phenomenon, but lots of people tend to purge everything they learned in school shortly after graduating. Also, the country is not exactly a tiny place so most people don't get out and visit these places or talk about them, its not like they're right around the corner.

Of all the things like this I've seen, it's like street hypnosis. Maybe Americans are just more open minded and a bit more vulnerable in some way ? American public schools aren't so far behind European schools that we can't catch up, for example, this year an Arizona law went into effect that a child can't graduate from the third grade unless he can read at a third grade level. It depends upon which European country you are referring to. Each country has different stats. Some European countries lag behind the United States and there are European countries that are ahead of it. *shrugs*

We have a real academic problem in the U.S. We have lowered the acceptable SAT scores in order to accommodate the less fortunate in our country, while depriving the smarter students of a good education.

I can tell you there are a number of countries that are worse off... unfortunately. Did you know Finnish children don't attend school until age seven? I worked with tourists for 10 years, and the only way the Americans fitted the stereotypes were that the women were definately louder and bossier than us.( They were also fatter - but so what? )They were always friendly, interested, cheerful and polite - including the kids! They were our favourite tourist groups, after Australians (Australians have the same wonderful sense of humour as the British, only they are more friendly.)

I am not saying I would like these people to take part in voting in the government which would be in charge of my country for, er, 8 years or so, but I can only speak from experience of several years working in a major tourist destination... given the choice between dealing with an amiable, interested, cheerful redneck or someone who was well-informed but frosty and morose (naming Keine Nationalitäten) I know which I preferred.

i think what we learned here is that Americans who live in the south are dumber than those who live in the north. Or maybe it seems like that to me since I live in the most literate city in the US

Don't be mean to the yanks! I worked with tourists for 10 years, and the only way the Americans fitted the stereotypes were that the women were definately louder and bossier than us.( They were also fatter - but so what? )They were always friendly, interested, cheerful and polite - including the kids! They were our favourite tourist groups, after Australians (Australians have the same wonderful sense of humour as the British, only they are more friendly.)

That's your prerogative. I am not saying I would like these people to take part in voting in the government which would be in charge of my country for, er, 8 years or so, but I can only speak from experience of several years working in a major tourist destination... given the choice between dealing with an amiable, interested, cheerful redneck or someone who was well-informed but frosty and morose (naming Keine Nationalitäten) I know which I preferred.

you can tell most of those people were just being polite and friendly. most of them knew where those landmarks were, and just smiled and agreed with the host to be polite and/or were playing along with the joke. they clearly said where the originals were, and then the host said, "noooo, it's in australia", and they just smiled and let him do his gag.

As someone who has actually liked most of the many Americans I've met, it's quite hard to maintain a balance on here, though, because the Glenn Beck contingent do tend to hang around these forums like a fart in a spacesuit, frothing at the mouth at any perceived criticism.

Hmm... can;t agree with you on the Glenn Beck front; he strikes me as seriously mentally ill. I agree with you about Americans from the north, though - they get a really unfair press; some of the nicest, most tolerant, intelligent, enlightened people I ever met, and a real pleasure to deal with. They do tend to be burdened with the south, though; on trips to different southern states, unfortunately I definately found the majority of them were heading toward Jerry Springer territory and beyond.

Haha. When push comes to shove i judge people on what they do, not what they are. If someone is stupid in my books i wont criticise, i like to think decisions decide a person. I would also like to point out that tolerance is key, and yes some people we cant tolerate, but there are not many, call me weird but at times i think genuine good intelligent folk are even exploited on Springer. "Caught"?...They admit to all their sketches. I doubt they'd have people their pulling stunts on in the thank-yous in the credits. (Such as in the case of the Julian vs Sheikh Hilali and Anthony Mundine sketch) It's the difference between organised sketches and stunts. Its not about money so much as the actual drive to travel. Where there's a will...which is ingrained pretty much everywhere except for the States. Just no idea about the world at large. Know this attitude from family in america.
