The only similarity is that both are engine features having to do with cam actuation, but they are actually very different. VTEC is a a stepped operation with two sets of cam lobes, at a fixed rpm the engine switches to a completely different cam profile. There is cam profile A and profile B, each with fixed lift, timing, and lobes and the engine switches between the two.
VVTi is a continuously variable cam phasing, where the degree of the cam varies throughout the rev range depending on many factors, and the cam lobes and lift are fixed.
i very much doubt its from a gt4 as the stock gt4 tranny is not up to it , even the rally gt4's used Xtrac transmisions , different everything including hubs , shafts the lot .
ok ppl need to chillax w/ the arguments here. honda makes nice cars yea... but that's totally irrelevant here. the point of this video is to showcase the amazing ability of this lightweight corolla to burn dirt n rubber in the new S2000 racing class. Its a WRC car. and plz don't yell about stuff comparing diff. engines. remember that the 3s-ge was made all the way back in 1991 and still kicks ass...
While on the topic of boasting about honda's power out put please remember that ultimate tuning power is dominated by not Honda and its limp fisted N/A engines but Toyota 2jzgte and Nissan RB26dett motors and any tuner will tel you the toyota is easier to tune and will churn out 600hp on stock internals. No honda can do that ...... I love to hear those aluminum blocks go bang bang!!LOL
Congrats for the TRD TEAM .. I'm so happy you guys came back to Rally with a Toyota .. I would Love to see Toyota Create a rally car to compete with Mitsubishi EVO and Subaru WRC rally cars .. Proud to be a Toyota Fan .. it's all about Quality Genuine Parts
Wow. A video like this really brings the losers out who have NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.
The car uses a Toyota BEAMS 3S-GE 2.0 Litre engine that revs to 8500rpm (class limit). The running gear is taken from a Celica GT4 (read: 4wd), and retrofitted to the Corolla.
The racing class it is homologated for is SUPER 2000 rally. This DOES NOT MEAN it uses the Honda S2000's F20C motor.
Control gearbox? That is a very good idea! I like that.
Wouldn't the rest of the running gear be from the Celica then? Probably custom driveshafts, but the diffs and axles would be from a GT4 I would have thought. Why change something that works so well!
Not sure, you'd have to ask the TRD Aus people. The GT4 is getting pretty old now. Not putting it down that I'm sure things have developed further since then.
Dude. Either that car has a sequential trasmission or that guy can SHIFT! And I doubt it is. Sounds like three pedals to me. So, wow. Among many other things in this video, awesome driver at least when it comes to shifting.
Well it sounds to me like you know what you are talking about and I really have no idea what I'm talking about. But I would think that without synchros you would shift slower because you'd have to wait for engine speed to match up. But I don't really know what a dog engagement is.
you claim the nsx is a super car you dont know your facts mate, Dori kings N2 spec TRD AE-86 will destroy any nsx any place any time anywhere any how by the way my the age differance is about 20 years and another thing my mum drives a honda shita. TOYOTA all the way honda are to rice to rice
Lol...the Amuse S2300 GT1 is the NEW touge monster. It also won a battle against the 600hp touge max moster MCR Skyline GTR. What makes you think that outdated Corolla will even come close? Too much Initial D for you kid.
hmm...thats why a 2jz twin turbo supra would smoke an s2k any day ....and the new scion fuse is going to be coming out with 400 hp stock ...still dont kno all the specs
And teknocky you bag out honda engines and then quote the specs of this RACE spec engine like it's the ducks nuts. the engine in the honda s2000 has 9k rpm redline and makes 240-250 hp in STOCK form. do decent I/H/E mods and you are looking at ~260hp in a road car. toyota have yet to release anything close for a production car. As good as toyotas are they are a distant second when it compared to hondas mass production of hi po NA engines.
Well...if you haven't noticed...that's the only thing their good at !!!! Working with NA engines...Have they ever made a turbocharged engine(except the honda city and those crappy lil cars)?? NO...Toyota has made tons of turbocharged cars...'Cuz toyota CAN!...They 3S-GTE can reach over 700hp...can the F20c do that ?
god, you toyota fans are so insecure about hondas. The DOHC b series honda engines crap all over the 4AGE 20v in NA form at equivalent mod levels. then you have the K20A (DC5R integra) and F20C (S2000) engines which toyota haven't come close to for a production car the 1.8 vvtl engine, while on paper looks like the B18C7 doesn't come close in real drivability or response to modification. Honda are also the only jap marque to produce a car to match euro super cars of its period, in the NSX.
The current cars go faster than the old Group B cars. So you could then conculde that the difference is what they should and look like on the road.
More to the point the S2000 is supposed to compete with the current group N cars. You'd have to agree that an S2000 changing at 8500rpm beats a group N car changing around the 4500 mark!
Pure engineering trying to control what was massive power at the time. Ah, we're talking FIA spec group N rally cars with a 34mm air restrictor (think that's the size). I guess they could rev to 8000 but what on earth for, there's no power up there!!!
looks and sounds great Neil!!! Well done to all the boys and girls down there @ TRD! I presume you have come along way with damper rates since this video... but its a good start!
You guys are dumb. This is by no means a honda engine. It dosen't sound like a rattle can. It's a 2 Liter 255HP engine with an 8500rpm limiter for the S2000 Class.
who ever thinks toyota would put a honda motor in one of there rally cars isnt to bright the old 4A-GE 20 valve black top would still go harder than any crappy honda motor out there go the rolla keep up the good work good luck to simon & sue evans in 2007 go hard
if you guys read the video description.... The guy who posted the video even said that this is a corolla speced out to s2000 specifications. S2000 stands for Super 2000 as in FIA's Super 2000 specifications. NOT S2k.... s2000 does not automatically mean the honda.
The car in the video is the new Toyota Corolla homologated to the FIA's Super 2000 (S2000) specifications. It will compete in the Australian Rally Championship.
Why would Toyota out a honda engine on their car when they have a 3S-GTE that's much better than the Honda S2000's engine? The answer to your question is probably no.
This is one "coordinated" video. =p

The cars in the S2000 class are not allowed turbochargers, they are normally aspirated, so the engine is a 3S-GE, not a 3S-GTE.

I don't think the running gear is from a GT4. I'm pretty sure it's running the control sequential shift box for the category.

It's probably a racing gearbox with straight cut gears, a gearbox without synchros and a 'dog' engagement.
