Svalbard The Dark Season

I visited Svalbard in July and since then I'm yearning almost every day to go back! I really want to go in March. It's just such a magical place with a special atmosphere and interesting people.

My cousin lived in oslo so i think if had a chance to go there i'll also visit longyearbyen!

I just love it at first sight and also take a break from a hot climate in thailand!

NO. from mid April to Mid August there is midnight sun in Longyearbyen / Svalbard, that means 24 hours sun, so it is very hard to see any aurora on the daylight sky.

Lets say, I have my own engine for electricity, and my own foodsupply. I just build a house in the middle of nowhere without having to ask about it? Just bring the material and just build whatever I want, wherever I want? Even though its all up to me to manage by myself. No taxes? No license for anything?

Well. Atleast I think the norwegian government knows more about it than for example the greeks. So what does it mean, free zone? What are the limits of a free zone?

Oh my. And are you okay with that? My personal opinion is that Norway should close Svalbard, and have it for private use only, or atleast give the rights out more carefully.

well every country who signed the contract (as I have read) is allowed to build in Svalbard, before it was more russians then norwegians in Svalbard, it has decreased though

What countries signed the contract? I don't know how things are over there. But I would feel very suspicious towards the Russians =) I really don't trust them. Nor do I trust the Americans who are building the seedsvault. But what do I know.

The russians have invested a lot now on projects in Svalbard this year, so I expect a lot more russians moving there
