@fountainchain126 even though I completely disagree, I did not see that as arrogant. At this point of his career, because of his prolific conducting and the immense impact he made in the music world I would say that he earned it.
No way to gauge how future generations will appreciate our music. Its quite possible they will consider the music of Frank Zappa as seminal and beatific and divide time into the pre-Zappa and post Zappa epoch and venerate something called Zappism. Are you a Zappist Brother?

Thank you so very much for posting these studio takes. I have loved this recording of West Side Story for many years and was so excited to see the availability of these videos.
wow...i know from experience how hard some recording sessions can be, but i bet LB made it a little more enjoyable. Always a pleasure to watch the master at work. great vids :)

Kills me to see him conducting with a cigarette in his mouth. Must have driven the wind players nuts- not to mention the non-smoking others. I suppose that we've changed public attitudes about smoking inside buildings even since this was recorded in the 80s, I believe.
I have this recording in my collection and it's helped change my attitude about opera. Still don't like listening to opera unless I'm there and it's live complete w/ costumes and orchestra- then I like it. I'm learning.

Damn. They didn't swing the Jets song; it sounded too mechanical. They didn't capture the jazz feel that Bernstein intended and was there in the movie. I wonder if the singers gave the movie soundtrack a good listen before recording this.
Bernstein was certainly a great of this genre, but I think if you're looking for the man who birthed american musical theatre, you gotta go back at least to Gershwin, if not earlier
um..though ABBA's music is good, it is not nearly enough of a comparison to Bersntein's score of West Side Story. WWS is an adaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet with original music. Unlike MAMMA MIA, story told via pre-existing music. Though both are good, I doubt very much that MAMMA MIA will be considered a classic. What is making it a classic is ABBA's music, of which everyone equates to the 70's, not MAMMA MIA.
wait...isnt mamma mia just a collection of abba songs? i kinda think they just made somekind of plot, and shoved the music in. judging by the movie, which i only saw the tv ads for, it is prolly aimed at old menopausal women.

I find it amusing how Bernstein doesn't know the popular name of what he calls his quintette. Tonight.
Guess he didn't appreciate Stephen Sondheim very much.

not even close to the same level... Bernstein is GENIUS!... not to dis Abba, they have good music, but can't compare to WSS
