Am I the only one that hated this movie? When I was a kid I thought this was extremely boring... And I like classical music, but not to watch it like a movie...
This is a piece of animation genius. I had never really thought before about what animators do and how. This seems as though Bernstein wrote the score for the cartoon. Wonderful and even timely.
Yeah it does, it does sort of sound different, but it definitely goes as high as it's supposed to. If it didn't, then it would be in an entirely different key, which it's not in.
... and a great protrait of life itself... in the end, one never knows what could come from the next corner... keep dreaming!... probably you will get your dreams to be true.
Is this a freakin' marvel or what???... Gershwin was certainly inspired. A marvelous song and a great animation... a good portrait of the "crazy 20's".
The genius of George Gershwin. The genius of Al Hirshfeld. The genius of Disney animators (before they sold out). This is awfully close to perfection.
This story told us , that by making a good desition we can change many things
Man1 quit--> man2 gets job--> man tries to get a cab and get a wooden vehicle -->the girl's ball bonces with man1-->ball bounces with the girl's parents office--> Girl parents save her--> ma who got th job takes nagging wife --> man3 makes his dream dancing w/girls--> man1 plays in the band of dancing girls---> parents learn a lesson --> everybody is happy! (except the nagging wife :P )
This animation always uplift me. It's amazing how it depicts the existencial drama of our own lives as something we sometimes think is imposed on us but more often than not is of our own choice; how it tells about the innate capabilities of human beings to turn their lifes to better, whether by outside events or simply by changing of mind; and how it shows that chance links us to one another in very special ways.
I was kind of annoyed when the Essentially Ellington festival for high school jazz bands used this as an audition song...it loses a lot of its character when a bari sax plays the clarinet solo and there's no orchestra.
Only thing i've ever seen that beats Inception, if you know what I mean.
I love this video <3 The music, the animation, the story, EVERYTHING <3
More importantly, the daughter, the un-employed man and the red haired guy has to thank the musician xD If it wasn't by his desicion, everyone would be the same, except for the daughter that she could have died o-o
I love this story more than nothing because it tells you to take the chance when you see it x3 (Everyone except the daughter)
@MyHeavySac Yeah. If I could just be born in like, 1910, live untill the end of the 20's and come back again in the 60's and still be in my early 20's by 2004, that would be great.
@lucaslmgv Its kinda easy... watch each part individually, watch the facial expressions of each and listen to the dramatic music. Actions speak louder then words. If you take time you can realize it. The guy who needed the job, notice how he couldnt pay for his own coffee and had to take from a man who dropped one, how he tried to steal a small apple and how happy he was to get the other guys job at night "since he seems to be a night time kinda guy" as well. Its all about the actions
@lucaslmgv and guess what, alot of people STILL dont get it..... its there for those people.... not you who actually get simple symbolism and can understand actions without hearing words....
this isn't even the original! the music has been transposed up a semi tone!I am playing this and was following the music, they also cut out a bunch of piano solos.
@LuckyB107 I understand what your saying, I am also learning this song. I own 2 versions of this song. The one you are learning is probably the version of the song that Gershwin wrote a few years later after writing the origional version of the song in 1924. The version that Fantasia used was the 1924 version.
EXQUISITE! Falls right in line with Disney's original concept for Fantasia[s]: Forget those (so called) "musical experts"! What would the 'common man' envision in a piece of music.
Anyone who says that this is racist is a racist. Moving on.
This interpretation of the piece is fantastic, and it helps me out too, since my HS orchestra will be playing it in France in 2011. It helps me visualize the story Gershwin was trying to tell.
Rascist?! Not by a long shot! It's an inspiring video, where in the end it all works out for EVERYONE! Great movie, Great animation, make for a great expirience!
i like how disney uses animation to expose people to classic music also its not so bad when they abridge the pieces because it tends to lend to the overall impact of the animation so its not just the original music that makes an impact its the combination
This is such a beautiful depicition of either Harlem or New York City- I love how the music breathes such life into truly amazing animation. The Jazz Age will forever live on because of things such as this- when Disney created art, and not pop stars.
WHOA, that's really weird, for some reason this video has all the pitches raised from the original. I'm guessing it's because of either the program used to upload it onto the computer or YouTube's uploader. It sounds really interesting in a different key though ^_^;;
Its supposed to be the 30's or at least that is what it says in the little booklet that came with the DVD. The song its self however was composed in 1924.
Kindofguitarish, the reference is that no one can get a taxi in New York City...I know I've tried & I'm not a young African-American male....God bless them, I don't know how cab drivers make a living in NYC, they don't seem to run with a lot of fares..... I just love the music and the storyline is very 1940's-ish
there are jobs. just that the people in their positions just aren't happy. It could be the GD but there isn't enough evidence to actually say that. Only one guys is actually poor there... everyone else has other problems. The actual worker doesn't even want to work, he wants to play music.
I can relate myself to the little girl. When I was growing up I played alot of sports, along with tutoring sessions, dance lessons, and singing lessons I rarely had a chance to have fun with my family
