  • Jelly Roll said in an interview in the 40s that Scott Joplin helped him compose parts of this piece. Joplin most likely wrote a basic melody with harmonic progressions, and Morton then rearranged and played it in his own special way.

  • beyond perfect

  • Perfect

  • Where is the stomping?

  • @professor314 A "stomp" is a type of music; it doesn't necessarily mean the performer is doing any stomping.

  • Very nice rendition. A great left hand too!

  • @timzydecozahn You could have a great left hand if you could stretch to reach an 11th with your pinky & thumb too. I'm waiting for Max to post some Fats Waller renditions.

  • the best! goog job :)

  • Both ways of pronouncing the word are acceptable. The version you suggest is used commonly in the United States, but as Max is Canadian, of course he uses the pronunciation with the first syllable stressed, which is most common worldwide.

  • Ah yes, very true, but merely from a performers perspective, it's simply a better idea.

As far as the "worldwide" perspective, if you use IPA to break the word apart (which is the International Phonetic Alphabet that is used worldwide by singers in order to understand different languages), then the pronunciation I gave was actually simplified and incorrect, but it still got the point across.

  • i like this version of king porter a lot....it has everything it should....the morton sound, and the pianist interpretation and point of view close to the style...its not only the notes on the lead sheet..

rhythmically has a great treatment too.

i agree with all...its a great version here on youtube.

  • exelent performance and sound

  • People say that Elvis didn't die. This video shows that JRM didn't die either.

Seriously: This is a great mix of the best bits out of Jelly Roll's various recordings of this, plus the player's own contributions in the Jelly Roll style. Most importantly, it still grooves (swings) in the same way.

  • Best version of this tune on Youtube. This sounds like Morton, but the take we never heard from him! Jelly is smiling down and he's got his diamond tooth back :D

  • I like the version which max has in his profile, if that one was with such a good quality asi this one it would be awesome

  • Boy his playing has really come along over the past years.

  • Absolutely superb! What a joy to listen to.

  • Max plays one of the best King Porter Stomps around. Not to mention this is on a 9 foot Yamaha. Way to go Max!

  • Couldn't agree more with ya. The best live King Porter I heard. Which sheet version did you use, or played thou by ear? Merry Christmas and thanks for uploading.

  • fantastic!
