  • I played snare!!

  • i played chimes on this for an honor band this songs gives me crazy chills

  • I play this in my high-school concert band- I'm a flute.

Somehow, I doubt that I will be as pro at this piece as these guys are though...

  • i play bass drum and tam tam "gong"

  • My band played this song for contest this year and got all ones even got a 1+ !!! :D

  • I play bass clarinet and literally get ten bars of resting in this entire piece. Not to mention at the beginning of the tune its a killer on breathing. Sure my part has a solo and sounds good together as a band, but I just hate this piece so much cause by the end of this my lower lip is dying.

  • Omg, this just brings back memories of grade 9 concert band... best year of high school ever ='D

  • I'm playing this in my school's band right now for SOMEA this year and for our all district band concert I'm so excited! :)

  • About five years ago I played this at an honors band festival in Ohio, 1st alto sax. Wonderful piece, I had no idea it was so well known... the composer Mr. Reineke directed us. I had no clue he was now the director of the New York Pops!

  • my middle school band is playing this song for band and it is extremely hard at times but amazingly fun

  • amazing song, played it in high school and won every festival we went to. this song is so so so amazing.

  • I play the chimes too in the vjhs band

  • my band is playing this right now. i play the chimes/bells/tambourine part. its fun. i love the piece. lots of running around though.

  • Yeah, my band's doing this song this year. I play 1st trombone, so there are really good parts I get to play. No solos, but still the melody.

  • Our band is doing this this year, and I love it. There are parts that are so thrilling, and parts that are so moving. I play 1st trumpet on it, and I love the beautiful soli at the beginning and the parts where I get to wail. I also enjoyed watching the audience leap out of their seats with the opening timpani part!

  • 2nd parts sounds like mission impossible 3:19

  • Our highschool KILLED the competition at a festival with this song. Why? Cause they're good, and this song is just that amazing. It was truly the best song in the whole festival.

  • @VayneValentine

mine too, GPCHS, Grande Prairie Composite High School in Canada Alberta. im pretty positive we got silver at nationals because of this song, was so nasty.

  • my high school's marching band is using this as the opener and ballad of our show this summer. it's awesome.

  • @ryan47060 mine tooo.......

  • This should be a marching show. That'd be badass. We played this song last night for our "Farewell Seniors" concert and we also platyed American Elegy. If you haven't heard it, you should look it up. Both songs are great.

  • Im playing this song for band

  • my band sounds just as good =)

  • my school is playing this for our spring concert and i am so excited..i love how this song makes you feel

  • What instruments are featured with solos on this song?

  • @hollydinkel we played the begining solo with a euph and a french horn. i played the french horn part and it was wicked!! :) love this song

  • Played this at the 2010 Optimus Festival. 5/5 from each adjudicator. Said we were most likely the best grade 10 band in Canada. Fort Richmond Collegiate high school represent!!

  • well, guess what. . . we got superior on this piece also from all the judicators. But this was not in 2010 this was in 2009. I live in Alberta.

  • This is a really fun easy song to play i played it in 9th grade. I play the french horn.

  • @Rizrazzle93 bull...

  • Is this the entire piece ... I thought that there was another movement ?

  • does this song (during the parts representing the good sister) remind anyone else of the music from edward scissor hands? I.E. 2:01 or 5:49 or 6:08

  • Thats probably because this is the same guy who wrote the music for that. Love it, open fifths and 5/4. Im playing this right now in band, tenor sax. Quite a nice part. Reminds me of O' Fortuna in a couple of places, he refers to several other songs throughout this piece

  • I just got done playing this for my all county band performance. This song is truely amazing if you know the story behind the song, you can actually visualize the two sisters in the struggle of saving eachother

  • same here...wonder if its the same county, haha.

  • very nice song

  • The year after we played the witch and the saint, our band director found us another Rienke piece called Goddess of Fire. It sounds almost the same in some parts. He's not a very original composer

  • >XD I LOVED playing this song so much!!! It was one of the few times our band actually sounded..EPIC!

  • this is good recording

  • You don't have the complete song? :'(

  • Our band just got done playing this song tonite. We totally owned it.

  • Really nice song

  • Delicious song ;D

  • Hmm at 2:57 i was looking at the conductors score, i think myabe a little more of a slur on those notes?

  • Yeah i play bb clarinet, its a really fun piece to play

  • we played this last year for one of our spring concert pieces last year. i'm trying to convince my band director to let us march it next year.

  • i'm so excited to play this piece next year. i was so thrilled when my band director played this in my music appreciation class and told me we were playing it for band. for festival, of course. hopefully anyway.

  • BASS CLARINET SOLO! WOO HOO!

  • I know! i love it! In our band i get to play it!

  • we played this in my marching band a couple years ago. definitely our best show. i love the epicness of this :)

  • my HS played this when in was in jr, high and it was amazing!! gave all us freshman chills!!

  • i played this my freshman year and my first chair player wasnt there so i totally screwed up the solo :/. but you all did an awesome job on this! great job! better than me! GO HORNS!

  • i played this song in high school. i was the baritone solo in the beginning every year we played it

  • Omg, this fitt perfect to pirates of the caribbean, From 3:06

  • this by far the best band ive heard on youtube play this song, similar to my band haha. GREAT JOB!

  • Very good oboe player.

  • yes the oboe was very good and had one of the best tones ive ever heard

  • The band I play in is playing this in a festival in a couple weeks. I am so stoked. This is an incredible song.

  • I typically only listen to Mudvayne, Lamb of God, and other metal bands and icp+Dark lotus but this song is awsome.

  • it sounds so much better when listening to it live and not just recorded. i've only heard it when i was playing it in districts so now it sounds so different.

  • I think this is recorded....not live....(the people aren't moving lol) :P

  • I played this song in junior districts.

  • Teh Pineville High School Band played this song for Festival...We did really well and I have offically fallen in love with this song!!

    Emily

  • I play horn and I we have to play this for NIA next week :( im sooo nervous im going to mock up the horn solo

  • You'll be fine, but Pro Tip #1: always dispense of the liquid in your horn several bars before!

  • That's usually not a problem but about 5 bars before the solo my heart starts beating faster and I get butterflies in my stomach and I start to get nervous and I worry about missing a partial or fracking a note

  • Fair enough. Well, good luck! You are playing a very difficult instrument, so the occasional frack is nothing to worry about.

  • Pure nature of the horn unfortunately! Just think of it as if you were playing it in rehearsal. Breath! I've done that solo a few times (I'm in a number of groups lol, and the piece seems to keep following me around!) of course, I'm in the concert band world not school world anymore....oddly enough, now my sister is playing for festival with my old high school this year! :P She keeps worrying about the same thing, don't sweat it!

  • my marching band did this last year, and it's soooo amazing!!!! I like the second movement best.

  • i agreee..a very fun song...i love the slow parts =) the melody is so nice

  • by far the most fun song ive ever played.

  • Great timpani parts, I like them very much.

    I love this song!

  • I remember playing this in high school..and we only had one french horn player..this song was everyones favorite..it rocked..i hated playing the picclo and flute part..

  • Bellingham high school?

  • woah, this isnt an actual video. hahaha. good recording anyway

we played this song, its sick, especially the trumpet part

  • we are playing it is concert band 10 in high school, great song.

  • what happen to the ending??? that's the best part!!

  • Dude, the flute at the 5/4 is the best part. No doubt.

  • French Horn all the way guys, and it sucks this song ends right at the good part =(

  • where's the ending D:

  • Haha i was thinking the same thing

  • This song is pretty kool. We are playing it this year for our concert. I play the oboe myself cuz im that kool. xD

  • hell yeah we are just learning this song for my band. i got the timpani part. absolutely love it

  • same here, timp part :)

  • My hiigh school marching band played this last year. I had the chime solo in the beginning

  • This song is just so unbelievable. Was really exciting for me beacause I had the french horn solo at bar 118 :)

  • OMG we played this song like two years ago, it was so fun

  • Stirs something deep in me every time I hear it. Most enjoyable timpani part I've ever played to date (just ahead of Chorale and Shaker Dance. maybe even).

  • Great Timpani part.

Currently playing it in high school with our Symphonic Band, we have contest this weekend with this song.

  • We're going to be playing this for Festival this year :D

  • I love love love love love this song. We played it last year and it was amazing.

  • nice...we don't have any good french horns, so I get to do the French Horn solo at the beginning of the song on my Trombone!!! Awesome use of asymetric meter!

  • i played that my sophomore year in high school, i was in the second best band out of 4 and we did that, it was so bad ass, i loved the upper range for the trumpets, plus the pick a note, me and all the trumpets played half steps, like C against a C# and a B natural against a B flat. it was sick.!!! you sound good, keep up the good work

  • Bham MA?

  • Were playing this piece in community band and I love it.

  • I absolutely love this piece. . .. it's so emotional and brooding. . . yet sweet and light at the same time . ..

  • was this the entire song?

  • i love this i got to play the bass clarinet solo when we played it at my school last year it was so much fun! and i usually dont even like band..lol!!

  • I love this piece :) I'm playing in my band, and I have to do the Oboe solo :)

  • I play it too with my symphonic band . I play Bariton , but i play all solos of bass clarinette . :P

  • that's weird. i play the baritone... is that the same instrument as the bariton? :P yeah my band is playing that this year too (i too get the bass clarinet solos :D)

  • Yes the same instrument . You get bass clarinet solos ? Nice !!!

  • i'm playing this right now i'm my symphonic band. i have the best part....period. bass clarinet baby

  • Hell yeah!

  • I Love this Song Go Flutes!!! LOL

  • I played this with my all district band i was 4th chair solo trumpet. I love the oboe solo

  • Jünge warum hassu nich geleeeäänt

  • If anyone has played this or listened to this song, this is a fine version and the quality of sound is there. LOVE the Bass Clarinet SOLO's. (I Played the Bass Clarinet in this song. Look for 5:14)

  • i agree... BUT! i believe the brass could have been more definitive in the way they played. its hard to explain other than that. I'd definitely give it superiors/ A-

  • Very True.

  • ich liebe dieses stück!

ich habe es bei einer Kapellmeistervorstellprobe gespielt...und habe mich (als Querflötistin)sofort in den querflötenpart verliebt! =)

  • great recording! wish the whole song was up!! i love steven rieneke pieces... i played this a couple years ago, as well as pilatus, and am playing raging river this year.

  • Good performance. I really enjoyed playing this in band (I'm a horn player). I agree with otherwise44. When we played this it went from super quiet to obscenely loud

  • Jugendblassorchester Ellwangen!

    Look at the score!

  • We're plaing this right now in band too. My favorite!

  • there is not enough crescendos and decrescendos,it's a bit stagnant. Also I feel there is intensity/passion lacking in this version, in my band it was pretty intense.

When I played it in band, it was my favorite song.

  • this is good in all but it's too fast in the parts where its supposed to be slow. and aren't the tympani's at 5:53 or a crazy snare or something? it's seems like theres something missing, i'm just not sure what. is it just me?

  • anyone know why i cant watch it?

  • lol.. i think its just a picture :P

  • no, i mean, out of all the videos on youtube, this is the only one that wont load on my computer... the little spinning dots just keep spinning...

  • its not working...

  • great song but very boring opening for tuba players lol, its one dam note

  • yay we're playing this in band! :D I love this song! I love the oboe in this song, it's so beautiful. The whole song takes my breath away. lol "If Goddess of Fire and Fate of the Gods had a baby, this would be it." since this has both songs in it. XD

  • We played this in my high school band last year. Although we did not have any French Horn players at the time we did have a ContraBass Clarinet that sounded just awsome. In the first bar with the timpanis we made my conductor's 5 year old girl cried because we came in so powerfully and scared her. Truly Steven Rieneke (sp) is a great composer. I love the way that he always brings in sections of 10/8 time.

  • this song just does not sound the same without the massively now rummble of the concert bass clarinet.

  • lol I'm playing this in band this year for concert festival in march, I play the horn, it's got some good parts, but not a very hard piece, just difficult to get a lot of contrast out of dynamically in some parts.

  • were playing this in band!!!!!

  • do you have the full version for this song??

  • This sounds great! I'm playing this at school! I'm the snare player, and In the same band as Alexeipaish. This is tons of fun to play.

Any words of advice from snare players? I find this much easier to play in traditional then match..

  • i play the bari sax in this song im in 8th grade its pretty hard for bari sax alot of low notes that you have to hold for a long time but its pretty cool song

  • dude we played this song in my my 8th grade symphonic band and we got a 1 at contest.

  • Hey jpopper24, I'm also playing this in my 9th grade band. Yeah its great.

    Nice playing nice sound.

    GO BERRI!!

  • we're playing this song in my 9th grade band right now. i play bass clarinet and i actually have melody and solo's on this song instead of whole notes like usual. i love this song!!!!

  • Oh! I forgot, but why are there old geysers on there?

  • where's the rest of the song? Anyway this song is awesome and long

  • this is an amazing song, i'm so glad my school is doing it...I get to play the crazy timp opening. I know you're jealous :P

  • this song is awesome as a french horn player i enjoy soo much its so cleverly written makes me feel like i have more then OOM PAA haha goood to have melody and solos

  • I played this my junior year in high school in an honors band based out of Ohio Northern University as a first flute player. I will never get tired of hearing this song being played! Steven Reineke did and amazing job on turning this old German story into a song.

  • I whent with my highschool band to japan for a sister-city concert and we played this.....it was fun! (I was on second clarinet)

  • We play this song in our senior concert band. Its the most beautiful song we've ever played.

  • whos playing this? it was really good. i hate it when i have to listen to out of tune crap!

  • Basically, it is said there were twins, Helena and Sybilla. Helena went to a convent, Sibylla remained hom. Suddenly they both manifested powers of seeing the future. Helena was revered as a saint, while it was said that Sybilla was a witch. Sybilla was arrested. Helena returned home to free her twin, they escaped into the forest, but were caught. Helena drank poison and died in her sister's arms as they were surrounded. Sybilla heart-broken,escaped into the woods and was never heard from again.

  • There's a really tragic story to accompany this song...it made me cry when i heard it after i heard the story. I'll post it in the next comment.

  • what happend to the end of the song?

  • laural i mean bean

  • wooo, fast.. it sure sounds good this fast, but lot of details were left out.

  • If you like this song then youll LOVE FANTASIA on a theme by Thomas tallis

    IT IS AMAZING

  • the Oakmont Marching Spartans received 5 stars in everything except colorguard, in which they received 4, in this song for their second to last show. It was fantastic.

  • That's right, we did!

  • I loooooove this song.

  • our 8th grade symphonic band plays this song! it our competition song we are taking up to Chicago!!!!

  • we played this song in our marching show! We won state too!

  • i played this last year, it was fucking amazing, by far the best song we have played.

we sounded like, exactly like this.

  • OMFG at 4/10, that was PILATUS!!!!

  • yeah sometimes it sounds just like pilatus

  • reineke is awesome, played pilatus, goddess of fire, river of life, the witch and the saint and where eagles soar

  • @ 2/48 it would have been cool, if they had a choir with it.

  • sound like pilatus: mtn of dragons

  • but it was alot faster on some parts

  • my band played this last year(2006) for marching band season in louisville Kentucky, i play alto saxophone.
