And look at some other rappers during that time, LL COOL J, Beastie Boys, Sugarhill gang (the poineers of rap music), Queen Latifah, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, RUN DMC, Leader's of a New School (Busta Rhymes was in that group)... these were successful rappers back in the day. Also watch In Living Color, you'll see many old school rappers, it's a good show to watch I recommend it.
