I translated it from the dutch subtitles for you. It's as accurate as the dutch subtitles are ;-)
"The most important aspect for me is the enormous wealth of rhythmic variation which emerges from Zappa's music. He combines several different rhythms with eachother. Because of my background i find this ofcourse more interesting than some others might."
I agree with what Boulez says, Zappa is very much apart of the american maverick tradition. Ii've never heard of Zappa mentioning Ives or Carter as influence , but i can definitely see it in his music, especially Carter. Maybe that's just me though.
I think Zappa really had something with these melodies over sus-chords, like in "What will Rumi do?". I never hear anybody doing that, and i think it sounds incredibly beautiful. When the chord isn't minor or major, you have a greater melodic freedom
i know what you mean, like for instance in "the black page", where he has so much going on melodically, using so many different modes/scales, yet the chords are mostly suspended 2nd's
yeah or like in uncle meat, just sus4 or sus2 all the time. Thats make makes the characteristic Zappa-sound, and lydian! in the BP he in the beginning goes back and forth between g and bflat lydian, the whole thing is basically lydian in different keys, judgintg from the bass notes
That's "What will Rumi do?" I believe. Every musician had sheet music except the percussionist, Rumi. It's easy to find. I love this era of Zappa's music especially, as I think he was happiest with the performances, as he was with the Ruth Underwood / Ian / George Duke / Murphy Brock etc band. When I first heard this piece and read the title, I immediately thought of Ruth and his playful affection for her.
it is messed up he could still be alive , if his distrust for all things western would have also applied to the medical industry !

Frank's music and the whole genius of this man is absolutely underrated in this world full of MTV/VIVA etc-BULLSHIT!!!
No Composer/musician be it in the past, today or in future times will ever come near to Frank Zappa, I think. A GENIUS, if ever there was one...
