Probably wasn't 'hit' but curled up to sleep by crawling under the front lip where there is a cosy gap before the engine and they didn't realise he was in there, modern engine wouldn't have gotten hot enough to burn him! My driving instructor had a cat sleeping on his engine at night.

@cycmpdf Actually, the lower grill in those bumpers isn't all that strong. I work at a body shop so and deal with bumpers daily. He wouldn't get "sliced apart" by it.
Behind that grill is a hollow spot (where he got trapped) and behind that is the AC condenser and the radiator is behind that. The fans are behind the radiator.
The rad and condenser are actually pretty soft too, and are mounted on rubber bushings.
One lucky coyote for sure, but the story is quite possible.
