@kriegermeister3000 Just imagine how the 190 would have performed if it had been powered by the DB inverted V12 from the beginning! It outperformed the SpitV with ease in '41. Had it been powered by a V12 from the beginning it would essentially have been a 190D in 1940-41! This was what Kurt Tank wanted the 190 to be, but RLM had already signed off all DB engines to be used by Messerschmitt exclusively.
There are no doubt thet the DB's would have increased performance, but there are some really good advantages to the radial engine as well. The engine acts like an extra shield for the pilot. and the cooling system cannot be damaged(lol). Most radials would keep running even though they had cyllinders damaged.
@FysikFyren Yes it's true and a well known fact. However when it comes to fighter vs fighter performance the inline engine has the advantage smaller cross section and resulting lower drag. The difference is significant, as the early dora pilots discovered. The radial engine is well suited for ground attack planes which are exposed to very dangerous ground fire.
@Helicopterpilot16. Why the hell would they do that? Destroy the original? I'd say, keep it original for the love of god, otherwise its not a WW2 fighter.
@kriegmeister3000 Yes it was powered by a Daimler-Benz inverted V12. The later versions of that engine produced well over 2000 hp with the MW50 (Methanol-Wasser 50/50) injection.
@33vortex Thanks vortex, but this I have known for years. I just thought to throw that out there. The only thing I don't like about the ME109 is the landing gear. It seams too narrow, Many of these planes, in fact a third of them that were built. Crashed on take offs or landings. I read this long ago, The plane in this vid is a want to be. Peace out. and watch your 6
@kriegmeister3000 Yeah, caused the pilots a lot of trouble on the eastern front where airfield conditions were... less than ideal. The FW190 was in so many ways superior to the 109 that it should have replaced it as the main fighter of the LW. Why it didn't is, at least imo, because Willy Messerschmitt had political connections. Kurt Tank was a master in aircraft design. Just look at the FW187 for example. The Ta152C was what he always wanted the 190 to be, but he had to make do with BMW radial.
In Niagra Falls, Ontario (Canada) there is, apparently, a rebuilt (stock) Me-109 with the DB engine ... and it's flyable. These old Hispano a/c are left over from the 1968 movie, "The Battle of Britain" and they were equipped with same engine as the Spitfire. THat's the reason they don't have that sleek, long nose like the WW II era Messerschmitts.
original to the Hispano Suisa 109 was a griffon engine, note the high mounted exhaust, all the DB600 series had low exhaust ports... post war spanish built
This is a Spanish license built example. The engine, if I'm not mistaken is a Hispano built engine. This obviously not a Daimler. You might recall the film Battle of Britain from the late 60's. The Spanish Air Force loaned several of these fighters and several Heinkel 111 (again, Spanish license built) for the aerial scene.
Isn't this a buchon????

Der er sikkert en eller anden der har skrevet det før, men den pågældede maskine er ikke en Bf109. Det er en Buchon. Bygget på licens i Spanien.

That is NOT a Me109! It's a frickin crappy buchon (under)powered by a merlin engine.
Not at all representative of how the 109 performed, looked and sounded like in the air and on the ground.

@33vortex Didn't the real ME 109 have an inverted V-12.

No it doesnt, does not sound like a merlin at all.

It is a Hispano Buchon, merlin powered. Not a normal Bf109.
SmiertSpionem 3 years ago
definitely not a daimler benz! but sounds good as well.
doctordamage123 3 years ago
The exhaust looks wrong. The Me-109 was powered by an inverted V12 so the exhausts were almost even with the wing.
jrkepler 4 years ago
The Buchon was powered by a Merlin, kinda ironic if you think about it
Bergstaller01 3 years ago 2
The Me109 prototype was in fact powered by a rolls royce kestrel :O

Yeah the exhausts were too high

Beautifil Airplane, no doubt, but a spanish Hispano HA 1112 in dusguise, not a Messerschmidt.
