People are doing that today. (Crazy Guy On a Bike on the Web.) But yes, there was a particular romanticism, the "backpacking through Europe" that seems so retro today. However, Allen was everywhere. When I think of him I certainly don't see him as the American traveller. I see him sitting with some painted elder beside the Ganges, smoking pot and pondering the half-cremated couches floating by.
