@lujia My guess is he ran out of bullets...once you start gunning them down, why else would you stop? Especially considering how long the showdown is, and that he's clearly crying.

My guess is before he starts shooting he thinks he's pretty much gonna have to kill them all to escape...although the gun still would have made a pretty handy blunt instrument...and the KIDS don't necessarily know it's empty...maybe they'd back off a second time once they saw he was willing to shoot the first.
