  • whats the name of he song that plays at the begining? :p

  • I remember my gramma telling me about painting on stockings... i'm kind of glad we don't have the pressure of needing to wear stockings today!! i hate the darn things.

    Great video Peter!!!!

  • I really appricate listening to your stories.

Much better than a lot of the junk on youtube these days.

    Thank you!

  • Hey my Dear Peter, I love that version of "When the Saints" I'll check it out on YouTube if there's the full version of it! I'm still loving your videos! I got up extra early this morning to watch as many as I can! Take care my friend! Nnek@ ;o) xxx

  • Oh, you are the "Bees Knees", Peter.

  • I am continually surprised by your musical tastes, Peter! Dr. John?? You just ~rock~ !

  • this is my favorite video you have done!!!!

  • My grandmother used the liquid stockings as well back in the 40's.

  • Gravy paint! Oh my gosh!! Never heard of it. Thanks for sharing I liked it...syd

  • Talking to Mom one time, who was born in 1934, I commented that all 5 of her brothers were heavy smokers. She looked at me like - HUH?? - and said "Of course they did. We were at war and they were all in the Army, silly!" And I haven`t heard "The Bee Knees" since my aunt died!

  • Great story Peter! I think life may be simply backwards, we should be old first, and then become young. The naked lady on the pack of camels, brings back very fond memories. Ciao

  • Amazing that in those days smoking underage was much more relaxed and accepted. Very interesting video Peter. Thank u so much.

  • My mum died a year ago & I talk to her all the time.Nice to know I'm not alone!You're so lovely.My grandfathers both died when I was tiny.If I could choose a grand dad,you'd be it.So kind,so gentle,so wise,so funny.

  • I think it's awesome that a senior like yourself is so creative.Kudos to you!

  • Where did you go? 5 days is too long inbetween videos!

  • Never mind, Peter, you're great!!!

  • man your so borring i mean ffs uve dun like 27 of these !

  • Dear Peter, I've read about your videos in the paper, and this is the first one I've seen - it's brilliant! You are really clever, the way you've put the video together, and it's wonderful to hear you chatting away. I will be looking out for more from you, and will check out your other videos. Well done, keep it up! Jules x

  • Time always wins, but the life modules expended while watching your video blogs is always time well spent. I look forward to your next entry and... might I suggest Tom Waits for your musical consideration...

    Life and laughter,

    Paunch Line

  • Oh, the things we humans do to fit in and look cool! I loved the version of "When the Saints Come Marching In" that you posted at the end. I'm torn between wanting to hear more of the music and wanting to hear more from you. Thanks for giving us a bit of both.

  • Thanks again, man. I'm looking forward to hearing about that camping story! :)

    With Love,

    Jer

  • Anyone seen Peter? Its not like him to not make a video for four days...

  • 6 days now and i am checking all the time. i am a geriatric junkie no doubt.

  • Hi, I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please view my clip of some rare Silent Movie Star cigarette cards, 1924

  • keepem! coming old bean .and as for the nasty responces i think u are wise enough to treat them with the contempt that they deserve

    ps ..really enjoy your vids

  • My older sisters were teens when the war was on, and I remember them talking about liquid stockings, and Lucky Strikes went to war packaged in an Olive Drab Tin. Were you blushing when talking about the girls being "grateful" for receiving stockings from the Yanks?

  • When we see these videos we all hope that if we reach 70-something we'll someday be as old, wise, nice, and what is more "with it" as Pete. I'm 27, and I'm damned sure I haven't been "with it" since 1987!

  • Oh no! That only leaves twenty nine thousand five hundred & forty three

  • Only 29,143? How ever will Peter go on?

  • at first i liked watching your vidios but now you just make too meny, im sorry but i have got unatractive of your vido's i gots to unsubscribe...

  • Learn to spell.

  • im sorry that i dont know how to spell, its not my falt. its just in my Jeans, so please dont say that to people!

  • as always great to see you and great hearing your stories. I remember seeing a little house on the prarie show with the painted stockings lol. It's so sweet you still continue talking to your mom although you always did have a big heart and endless love. Great music! Take care!

  • My grandmother would often tell us of painting stockings during the war. Hadn't heard the one about gravy. I have to wonder if dogs could smell the concoction.

BTW-you are not showing signs of senility. It's great that you still commune with Mum. She probably told you she would always be there for you.

  • I remember the Chesterfield Jingle from the radio; "Hope says it and Crosby too, Como and Godfrey followthru Lester and Allen, they all tell you, Sound off for Chesterfield, sound of, try a pack of chesterfield, do it, today." Man those ciggerette adds were persuasive to remeber them like 60 some odd years after they were made.

  • Well done Peter, My grandfather was a spitfire engineer in Manchester,Not with us now - I enjoy listening to you

  • Peter love your vid as always. BTW as for talking to your mom, that is not a sign of becoming senile. I am a lot younger than you and both my parents died a while ago. I do have a quiet chat with my mom more than my dad. I know that they are both there looking out for me. Take care and great visuals btw in the intro.

    thanks

    gatebee

  • and the people bottling at reading in august weren't?

  • shut up he's awesome!!!

  • my dad has told me of the drawing of the line down the back of the leg but not the rest of the painting..or the graving browning heh heh

  • he he he liquid stocking... he he he Somehow, I can remember my grandma telling tales of her sister standing on the bed while she used black grease pencil to make the "line" down the legs and then go to a fabulous party. Too funny to think that if it rained the "stockings" would be streaked. Personally, I wonder how many guys would have noticed...

  • Thanks Peter for another great video. keep them coming. Liz, oc, ca

  • You made me love you, I didn't want to do it...and all the time you knew it.

  • great song at the end

  • Great video! ^_^

  • Very nice story dude

I found this by mistake and I like the vids.

  • Peter is the greatest. I just love hearing his stories of life.

It's relaxing sitting down and listening with a cup of coffee or tea and listening to Peter tell of us of his memories :)

  • YEP! I was right! These videos go GREAT with Sunday morning coffee and cake. And a breakfast burrito. And a cigarette. And another cigarette. And another cup of coffee. And another piece of cake...

    A pleasure as always.

  • A lot to have in 10 minutes! ))

  • I know you barely have time to read all the responses, but I am a 50+ writer living in the DC area in US and I am hooked on the beauty and charm of your blogs. Thank You for being there tp brighten my life!

  • I'm in a medical field and have had to look at many dead people. I've seen smokers lungs. If you see lungs from smokers, how black and sooty they are, it would be enuff to stop people from smoking. Your lungs never get "cleaner". They start out pink and just get worse.

  • your a sick twat, why dont you jus go die in a gutter nobody would care!

    Peter you rock

  • Brando, Pacino and De Niro are the best.

  • I also love Humphrey Bogart. The greatest filmstar of all time in my opinion. Nice Video Peter :o)

  • ditto on the expression you used: "BEES KNEES." I'll bet you know a lot of little words that were popular that have fallen out of use. You bring back the past so that we can appreciate where we are, or should be, & have a more solid foundation for the future, Peter.

    "cat"

  • i just subscribed to you peter. i think you blogs are fantastic and love listening to your stories. please keep telling!

  • THIS BLOKE IS CRAP

  • Then why don't you just piss off

  • ha.

i love listening to your stories.

  • "Bee's Knees", that was great...

  • After watching all the amateurish crap on YT its always such a treat to watch G27 a REAL YOUTUBE PROFESSIONAL!!!!

  • I guess every generation has a fixation on nylons and cigarettes at one point in their lives...

  • OI BLAZE, U DIE FIRST U ASSHOLE

  • LOLZ.. i really wouldnt wanna gree with wat u said cos i tink ill go to hell for tat..and when i say this..seriously old dude NO OFFENCE>.seriously!!..its juz a question .. like.. when r u gonna pass? ...erm..sorry!!

  • you make smoking sound cool, I think i'll go buy a pack, and start today

  • hahahahahahahaha good one hahahahahahahahaha everybody smokeeeeee soooo coooool geriatric does it "tobacco's new spokesperson"

  • Excellent....I enjoyed it very much

  • Peter:

I just wanted to say that your videos are great..we can feel your warmth and it really is something refreshing in this site...thanks a lot for everything Peter...we love u =)

  • You are my favouritist person on YouTube....love it so much. You're like the grandpa I never had :D

  • Fantastic Peter. I recognize it as an honor and priviledge to listen to your stories. As a so called young African American limited in his scope of experience and contact with older gentlemen such as yourself. I have a rare opportunity to peer into your genius. It is a pleasure sir!

  • Your commentary is pure pleasure Peter!

  • I just started watching your videos and I am very glad that I found them. I love listening to your stories...they remind me of my grandfather's. You are an inspiration to everybody to show that people aren't limited just because of their age. I hope you continue telling your stories to us. We are lucky to have such intelligence and interesting stories such as yours on YouTube!

  • I wish I hadnt fallen so far behind in watching your videos. Always a pleasure to watch. Thank you Peter.

  • Just got your response Peter - how exciting!!!

Thanks for saying hello. I look foward to seeing your next installment.Just wanted to let you know that I have an MFA in painting and my husband and I are craftspeople handcrafting wood jewelry boxes that we sell all over the US. You are a wonderful human being and we wish you good health.Keep 'em coming!

  • I just recently started to watch his video and they are very intresting.

  • ROFL I am not sure how I'd feel if a G.I. gave me a pair of stockings.

  • Whoa, Lucky Strikes! My dad smoked those.

  • Well, I'm old enough to remember " leg make-up" and the problem was always getting it on evenly. Many is the time I was in floods of tears because itwas streaky. I never put the " seam ". It got all over one's clothes. Lucky Strike changed color during the war as the green dye was needed. The ad was " Lucky Strike green has gone to war, you will

now see Lucky Strike in its new white package , yes, Lucky Strike Green HAS gone to war." I've made possible mistakes here in the exact wording.

  • Did it ever go back to the original packaging?

  • No, it remained in the package it is now. Before the war, it was a kind of

dark, olivy green. The ad they used was catchy which is why I remember it after all these years.

  • Great stuff - LOVE what you do!

  • Dude you don't have to watch his vids. This is a free country.

  • Thanks for another great video Peter, its really fun listening about what you did during the wartimes...Thankyou:)

  • stop being greedy he has millions of fans just be patient

  • Peter - I keep posting comments but never see my name.

would love it if you could just say"hi"

I've been following all your posts and LOVE you!

I wrote before to tell you I am a mom in upsate NY and my dad was a captian in WW ll

wish he was still alive to hear your stories!

  • Great Peter, loved the Dr John song at the end WOW

  • I talk to my Mom every so often too. She will always be controlling my life as well. Been gone for two years now. Thanks Peter.

  • Brilliant stuff peter- please keep doing what you do.

  • Fantastic as always and that was a very interesting version of The Saints Go Marching In at the end. I very much liked it, thank you for sharing it.

  • Awesome..

But why are you still rushing against time now that you have a Director account? It can be of any length as long as it is under 100MB, which you can get upto 45 minutes @ 320kbps, which should be fine quality for webcam (record video at 256 and voice at 64). Or upto 20~ minutes at 512kbps for more quality.

  • Oh Peter, those painted on stockings were also not waterproof! And can you imagine trying to pencil a line up the back of your own leg, and getting it straight? No easy task! You bring back so very many memories for me. Thank you. Keep 'em coming!

  • Man, I'd never heard of painted-on stockings before.

  • During the war, when stockings were at a premium, so women used to simply draw a line up the back of their legs (stockings had a seam up the back). My Mum was in school and if she got a run or a hole in her black school tights (rather than stockings), she used to used to shoeblack to make it look like there were no hole in them.

  • Just asked Mum about the liquid stocking stuff. Apparently, she tried it once and didn't like it. She got a laugh ovet the idea that some women resorted to using gravy mix!

  • Damn, you'd think women would've preferred to just go without, rather than use gravy mixes. Thanks for sharing what your Mum said...what a tough time for women to be fashionable in.

  • Great music and vlog of course. I think its kind of related to age and blues but remember Chuck Berry has just turned 80yo, I wish he would make a channel on here, telling us his stories as well.

  • Can we see a picture of your wife?

  • Thank you so much for doing these blogs! As you can see, we appreciate it (well, the majority). Love to hear more of your memories, Peter. Keep up the good work.

  • cool larry rivers picture at the start! -i love his work-

  • I talk to people I haven't see n years myself-- even those who've passed on-- it's the only way left to do that.

I never smoked-- I'm allergic to both cigs and alcohol (the strange thing is, I developed the cig allergy shortly after my mother quit smoking).

  • Nice work keep it up

  • Since smoking wasn't yet considered dangerous, were parents okay with knowing that their children smoked?

  • ^ shut up you pillock! You dont have the testicular fortitude to accept you're a sad loser who writes negative remarks to make up for his pathetic little life! I hope you remove his comment geriatric as he is using it as a cheap way to advertise his crappy videos!

  • I saw the post to which you are referring yesterday, but now that it's been deleted, it looks as though you're being rude to a normal poster! It might help to address the poster by name when you're justifiably telling him off! :)

  • u fucking dick, the videos are always great, remove your comment!

  • My God your insulting a 70+ year old man my God your a prick.

  • Video stopped after 51 seconds ! Sabotage ?

  • That happends to me on loads of videos glad to know it isen't just me.

  • Wonderful intro and, as always, wonderful video. Thanks so much. I wonder if the gravy browning you mentioned was similar to the Kitchen Bouquet my mother used. I can't imagine painting my legs with that. Of course, nowadays women, and some men, use spray-on tanning liquids. Not much different, I suppose, but longer lasting.

  • Customarily, New Orleans funeral music has a solemn and slow beat as the procession heads to the grave, and a lively one on the way back. Dr. John's version at the end of your clip is in a pre-burial cadence; the popular lively version would be post-burial.

  • I am so glad that I stumbled across your video! I really enjoyed the stories. This is the stuff you can't find in a book. Thanks! I wish I could get my Grandma to do it.. she talked once about putting her stories all down on tape. Great idea :)

  • Peter- you are adorable! Always love your adventures! Always worth my time.

It's so important for people to learn all aspects of history. You are a living historical document!

    (paint-on stockings?!? gravy brownings?!? LOL!)

    Until next time! XOXOX!

  • Peter! Always a great show. Much insight. A window into the not too distant past. You're like my grandfather who would tell stories to us as children. You serve as a welcome bridge. Keep the stories rolling.

    "cat"

  • Thank you; I'm subscribing.

  • This was something new to me.. very very interesting!

    Two thumbs up (5 stars)

I liked watching this and i must see all the other parts too.

  • Thanks again Peter.

  • Another great Video Peter.

Just out of interest, do you still smoke?

    Cheers.

    Sam

  • Peter, your videos are like another kind of addiction. Not quiet as dangerous as smoking but rather addictive !

To affliate to my previous speakers: THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN !

  • Got a kick out of the cigarette story.

  • When in August?

  • Peter...what everybody else said!! thank you!!

  • Hi Peter

    I am from Denmark

I love your videos, it took a while to catch up, but it was worth it. I feel that I know your history even better than my fathers. I dont know that much about his childhood. I want to change it, thank you for your inspiration. Dan

  • Oh goody. I was so glad to see you today. I've been looking every day to hear from you, I feel like a junkie. I love the nylons part. Great to see you.

  • Very nice, Peter! I lived in New Orleans for several years - and loved the Jazz Festival and late night music gigs.

    Cheers!

  • Keep up the good work Peter, i subscribe to your blog, and think that your blogs are very informative of how times used to be like in the UK

  • nice :D love you buddy :) hehe, don't be afraid to make the video a little longer? anyway i cannot wait until we hear about you and your friend camping :D that should be fun, thanks :)!

  • As always Peter, smashing! Thank you!

  • Thanks again

  • Ah! There you are. I was begining to worry when we didn't see you for a few days. I agree with Biddle22, I could listen to/watch you forever :).

  • thanks for the blog, seems ages since the last one! Nice to have you back!

  • Very good,as always.

    Ad

  • one of the best videos, you seem happy to remember your childhood, great video

  • That was worth waiting for Peter!!!! Great intro and nice editing, it flowed well.

  • absolutely ... there is no difference between the living and the dead.

  • As always, enjoyed your vid. Thanks.

  • Peter, you're great as usual.

  • Excellent blog, sir. Enjoyable to watch as always! Take care.

  • Don't feel like you have to restrict your videos to a time limit, Peter. Honestly, go for as long as you feel like. I'll watch you forever.

  • I like your stories Peter.

    Gravy?! Yikes!!

  • My Dad is about 8 years older than you, and he flew bombers out of England in WWII. I'm sure he would enjoy hearing your stories, but alas, he refuses to touch a computer.

Your story reminded me of one my Grandmother used to tell me about the war days. When stockings were hard to find, she once put "bluing" on her legs to try to simulate hosiery. It was all well and good, but in Texas in the summer it is very hot. And when she began to perspire...well her most embarrassing moment ensued.

  • Peter, you're right that smoking was everywhere then. Our gang smoked Lucky's (starting at age 12) and did tap them out like you said. I guess that style was international! The only good thing about the "paint on" stockings was that those ladies did not have to hassle with the garter belt, altough they probably wore a girdle anyway - as even thin people did then . . .

    Peter

  • Until next time, sir. Goodbye.

  • Thank you once again.

  • Enjoyed this one very much and was delighted to see the smile on your face as you spoke about your mother. Thanks again for sharing with us Peter.

  • Excellent story as always Peter :D

  • Like a lot of people I started smoking when I was a kid but Quit when my partner got pregnant, that was 14 years ago when I was 25 . Did you manage to quit and if so at what age and was it easy for you?

  • Yay Peter rules!

  • "Grateful". :D

  • I love your videos :]

  • Great post as always. I did not know that women painted on nylons that long ago. I thought that was a fairly new fad. Goes to show how much I can learn from your stories. Very insightful, luckily my days of wearing nylons are long gone, I hope! Taking care if two boys does not require that sort of dress. The closest I come is putting on a pair of white socks every once in a while:)

  • xoxox

  • It's amazing how you find a piece of music for every title, good job *thumbs up*

  • Very nice peter

  • nice choice of music. and another great tail.

  • also your moviemaker skills are improving a well put together first bit

  • Peter you continue to amaze me with your great stories and music. I am only 12 years your junior and I am enthralled.

    Hans / a.k.a. hanserd

  • Thank you so much, Peter, for your stories AND the music. It is all very much appreciated!

  • Another great video, Sir! Love the music as always. (you really are good at choosing great music, I'm always impressed). Like the sweater, too. ;-)

Have you stopped smoking? It's hard to stop, I know from my own experience, so I'd love to know more.

You made my day, as usual. Thanks!!!

    nienna from oregon usa

  • Thank you for another great story. It must have been embarrasing indeed for those poor girls ... thank you for telling about it :D Untill next clip ... goodbye!
