Very powerful ending, I remember seeing this in the movies and we were all waiting to see if they would end the skyline without the Twin Towers, and being glad they kept them in. This scene is the most anticlimatic I've ever viewed, and tells a story in itself.
@NeoConnor1 yeah such a great actor brody he should of won a oscar for predators aswell lmao. In all seriousness The pianist is a great film and Brody was very good in it, BUT no where near as good as DDL as the Butcher! DDL's co stars were scared of him while the camera's stopped rolling because he did not break character! Best actor alive today imho and i think he will prove that by winning his 3rd oscar nxt yr for Lincoln!
@NeoConnor1 Yeah im so glad that Liam Neeson turned down the role, even though he would have been v good but not DDL good lol, watched gangs again last night, quite ironic how he throws a knife at a picture of Lincoln.
This was a great film. This ending segment is my favorite part of the movie. We are only here for a blink of an eye and the World continues to evolve and grow and doesn't seem effected by how great we think we are, or what we've done with our lives. We turn to dust and are eventually forgotten, but the World is still here.
The hands that built America are still at work! It takes the poor but ambitious and those from across the world seeking a better life and uses them as the bricks and mortar to transform this country! These hands will never stop and will continue changing this great nation long after we are all dead and forgotten!
i know what Scorsese was going for with the Twin Towers shot. To me not showing the skyline after 9/11 and ending it with the Twin Towers still in tact was like saying "You dented us severely but you didn't break us."
@bonsekify Scum of Europeans, or Europeans that were curious about the new world and wanted more land or free worship far away from Anglican or Catholic clerics? Sir Walter Raleigh was a protestant aristocrat. Others like him were very well off before leaving for the new world. Not everyone was a street urchin looking for a magic land of "opportunity" to go from rags to riches.
New Amsterdam/New York had a 250-year history before this movie even took place (Civil War times). This movie covers a transitional time that ushered in a period of heavy immigration to the city (pre-Ellis Island). New York history and American history are inseparable in a lot of ways. I've always seen New York as America's true capital. Washington is just a meeting point between the old southern colonies and the northern ones.
I think this is the best movie ending ever (besides titanic cause i love that too) but This ending is more sad then anything else. All those people with hopes, ambitions, full lives, forgotten and the world moves on.
@harvbanger our descendents will just as long as we continue with stories to tell and traditions to pass on to! Awesome ending sad but really well done!
RIP Twin Towers. One of the factors of that attack was probably to do with the insane jealousy they had against the city, one of the most astounding cities ever built by the hands of man. I'd like to see them try and build something as great as this in their little shithole. Excuse my french.
I stayed up late tonight to re-watch this movie on TV. I was mesmerized by this final scene. I must have hit rewind 10 or 12 straight times to view the final 35 seconds of this film. The powerful music combined with the tranistional imagery of the cemetary & NY skyline is fascinating and sad. Who will remember us many years from now...when we're all gone?
This is supposed to be Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn (where many of the characters are actually buried.) This view would not be visible from this location, but rather from the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
۞
What years are these meant to represent?
It would be interesting to see what the next view in this progression would be.

To be honest it kinda of makes me feel sad not only for the people that actually lived during that time period, but for the never-ending passage of *time* as it relates to OUR lives today. Someday WE will be gone too
How shocking would it be if after they showed the shot with the twin towers, then made another transition to the city without them? Bring it up to when the movie was made. 2002.
wow talk about a proud city, now i know why Americans are so cocky look at what they can build. They Turned a series of islands into a vast Metropolis in just 200 short years.
One of my favorite movie scenes. So much history that was important to the participants has disappeared forever and with it the knowledge of how difficult life was in the past.
2 minutes of cinema which encapsulates the unwavering strength of a nation tested time and again throughout its short history, a history it has written for itself... and a powerful testatment to the fact that time, events and people are transient notions, whilst the spirit of a nation borne of strength, will, tenacity, and the notion of freedom, persists long after people, as well as buildings, are gone. (... and I'm not even American.)
@diskostew86 Nationalism is nice and all but it can also brings awful notions too if left unleashed. I count myself as part of the human family before couting myself part of this country, state, city or whatever. The human family is the only social group that does not inherently identify oneself in opposition to a human alterity.
