A woman walked to the front of the stage, took off one of her shoes and pounded on the stage, demanding that the performance stop. Someone else yelled, "All right, I'll confess!"
I was fortunate enough to travel to New York by Greyhound to see the stateside concerts hinted at by the rehearsals in this show. Seeing Reich and his ensemble do "Drumming" and "Music for 18 Musicians" at Carnegie Hall was something I'll probably never get to do again.
(Seeing Kronos do "Different Trains" and Pat Metheny and his hair do "Electric Counterpoint" was also a treat!)
Huge props to Michael Tilson Thomas for taking the chance and pushing Steve's work. Far too often classical music leaders resist change and fight musical advancement without perceived peer approval.
On the one hand, it's reaffirming that there are people who don't or can't understand because then as a music teacher, I have a job security! (Additionally, it's kind of nice humans all have different "strengths" so that some understand visual art, sports, while others "get" music of different types.) On the other hand, it might have helped if before the concert of say, Four Organs, Reich or Thomas told the audience about the piece they were about to hear. (I wonder if they did?)

@korjeklokismo The Sad thing to me is he through western music right out the window and thinks that he is some GOD of music, he would be nothing creatively without the western works and it's instruments.THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ORIGINAL .
@zionchild83 I don't believe he thinks he's some kind of 'god'. He's honest about what he has and hasn't heard, what he does and doesn't like, and what has influenced him. He's composing what he feels he needs to compose. He doesn't make a big deal about 'phasing' - he even admits he 'discovered' it entirely by accident. Don't confuse self-confidence with arrogance.

There is something completely ecstatic about the repetition in this music. It's incredible. Some people don't get it... that's too bad for them,

Reich has a wicked sense of humor, too! Listen very carefully to 9:13. Peace.

I respect Steve Reich as a musician and composer wanting to push the boundaries and try new things but this music is not fun to study!!

Reich is so intelligent. Haha. It's so sad people don't understand some forms of music.
