@LAWAGO wrote "if he is religious then hes not as smart as I thought."
That was my reaction too. To me, it shows a lack of Critical Thinking. I mean, if faith was a valid form of validation or truth, then why are we wasting money/time trying to prove a medicine's efficacy while people are dying? Why not just rely on faith that it works? And why have trials, where innocent people can get convicted? WHy not flip a coin for the verdict, and have faith that God would only punish the guilty?
@lgbtTV4 This guy is probably as smart as you thought, he didn't give a definition for being very rilgious. He may actually have thought through it very critically. If you think about religious technically and logically, it is an awesome institution, guide, maza and brain teaser. Dig a little deeper with your thought on what "faith" is and not what you have been told what it is. If you think critically about how the Bible defines faith u may see something diffeerent.
@politicalpuppettv Tell me then, how does the bible define "faith"? And why shouldn't we rely on it for judicial purposes? After all, we do say "In God we trust," right?
In metamathematics, we look for internal consistency. And the Bible fails miserably. Not only does it contradict itself, but it also contradicts science (i.e. cosmology), common sense (Noah's Ark) and empirical evidence (the problem of Evil). It is no more convincing or truthful than any book of myths.
@lgbtTV4 u r misin my pnt. I or noone else really should tell you what faith is. you are reding rligion 2literal an nt criticaly, aside from the fct that the bible has been trnslatd roughly. @lgbtTV4 The problem of evil is not a scientific question it is a logical paradox, and proposed solutions to it are not empirical. Do you think Leibniz dunked a compound of "All is for the best in the best possible worlds" in a solution of iodine? Did Voltaire look at the question through a microscope? Its a philosophical problem in a theological setting. In an academic setting its basically still philosophical because evil itself is poorly defined, and uh, no one can ask god what it is
@politicalpuppettv Peter Thiel is a chess master. He has an undergraduate and law degree from stanford. He started paypal and was the first investor in facebook.
I guess it is easy to question someone's analytical abilities on Youtube. But in real life, there is no question he would mop the floor with you.
@spaghettipolicy fine example of close minded there bud. You didn't take time to see that my comment toward Theil was actually the positive one becayse of your preconceived notion about me. A lil Self reflection might be in order.
@spaghettipolicy Yes, there is. Yours is an irrelevant conclusion fallacy. He was also born into wealth. I couldn't care less about how great he is at chess or what buiness he started (especially Paypal, one that has always had enormous custmer service problems.) Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump are fucking simpletons and Bush went to Yale. They accomplished a ton. If anything these resume items show that its not what you know but whom.
@LambChowder1 it is true that rupert, bush, and trump all had prominent fathers. There is no question that this opened the door for them early in their careers. However, it woud have been unreasonable to contribute all of their success only to nepotism and not to their business acumen, interpersonal skills, and intelligence.
In regards to peter thiel, I dont think you can attribute his business success to his family. His family did not tell him to be an angel investor in facebook.
@LambChowder1 You sound like a very angry person who is jealous of the success of others and has lacked success and accomplishment in your own life.
I have known many people who are quick to find fault with successful people. Generally, these people have lacked accomplishment in their own life. The reason that they fail is that they always find a way to blame their failures on others, rather than just trying harder next time.
@lgbtTV4 Are you smarter than god? Do you have an answer for what that first impetus was, the first dominoe? The first molecule that bumped into another one and eventually started creating matter and then life? How could you possibly label someone stupid or ignorant, just because they believe in a god or creator? YOU are the one who's not thinking.
@lgbtTV4 Captalizing "Critical Thinking", the atheist reaction to when the religious capitalize "Him." Talk about zealotry. By the way only Christian scientists and various foolish evangelicals believe that faith cures illnesses. Do you really think there are no religious doctors? Talk about a lack of Critical Thinking
Isaac Newton was extremely religious. Francis Collins, head of the human genome project, is also religious. Blaise Pascal, one of the greatest mathematicians of his time, was religious. Max Plank was religious. I am not saying that the fact that there are smart people of faith proves the validity of their beliefs. I am merely pointing out the fact that, sometimes, very intelligent people believe in supernatural things. Intelligence and Religion need not be mutually exclusive.
@LAWAGO I don't like Peter Thiel, but if you're going to base your opinion of intelligence based on what they believe, then you're not as smart as you would like to think either.
@LAWAGO Really, your objection with him is that he has a religion and not that he is a fucking nutso retard who believes womens suffrage should end, that democracy is bad, that a libertarian economy would be paradise despite the obvious flaws that anyone who is capable of reasoning could list by the dozens? How about how he spends his spare time: abusing and deceiving urban minorities for a laugh. Youtube is the playground for upper middle class spoiled brats, and he is their messiah.
I gotta agree, after wasting 2 years in college, then learning a degree is pretty much toilet paper in the IT world, I think this is a great idea. I made more money based on certifications I achieved(CCNA then I'm going for my CCNP in January) on my own then I would of made if I wasted more time trying to achieve my bachelors.
@LanPirate wrote "Peter Thiel isn't a republican, hes a libertarian"
He's philosophically Libertarian but in practical terms, he's a conservative Republican -- except on the issue of gay rights. But even then, if he wasn't gay himself, I doubt that he'd necessarily support gay rights. I believe that he's even a member of the GOP (but I may be wrong), and he supports GOP candidates, i.e. Meg Whitman and Ron Paul. Note that when the reporter labels him a Republican, Thiel doesn't correct her.
@lgbtTV4 He supports Ron paul because Ron himself is a Libertarian. A libertarian who wants to end all military operations over seas, decriminalize drugs federally and leave it up to the states whether they should be legal or illegal.
He is not a typical Republican, hence why he is investing money in building a Libertarian Island, with no laws and regulations.
@LanPirate I somewhat agree, especially in IT. Many of the most famous IT entrepreneurs are self-taught and/or college dropouts, as are some of the my best IT colleagues (especially since they demand a lower salary!). If motivated and intelligent, you can definitely learn more on your own. And you won't have to waste money and time on classes like literature, etc. BUT...it's a game, and the fact is, you're less likely to be hired (or even interviewed) without a degree. Unfair, but true..
@LanPirate More or less, you are kinda correct with that.
IMO, I think it's more of the case that the tech world is so damn fast-pace, more and more specialized and competitive that everyone has to keep on getting these certs' and training courses constantly. People with college degrees all have to take these courses too, along with those who never went to school.
The IT world isn't alone. A lot of science degrees, like Chemistry, have similar struggles too.
@LanPirate But I guess you would never get your first job having no BA, even if it seems for you that you have more use from your CCNA than from your BA.
college is a F'n joke. It's sad, it's a racquet. You get no value in return for your money. The college bubble is the next bubble to burst, and it's already bursting, people are realizing how F'n worthless it is.
Is money your only metric? That's so sad. I went to college to gain knowledge, just as I now continue to take classes, and read books and newspapers, to gain knowledge, Does Comparative Religion make me more money? No, but it helps me understand the world. And Ethics makes me a better person.
When I interview similar candidates, I'll hire the one with a better education if only because s/he will likely read and write better, and think more critically.
That's simply wrong. Studies show that today's top economies are based on technology, aka math and science, Just look at the rise of China and India, and the established economies of Japan and South Korea. My field is medical physics. So where exactly are people supposed to learn advanced math and science if not college? From a book? A movie? Tune into CNN his week and watch the Fareed Zakaria special to see how wrong you are.
@lgbtTV4 China & India don't have a broken education system, that's why those countries have risen & the US has declined. I agree w/you 100% that schooling & education is an absolute MUST if u wanna properly learn a field, but the current system is a joke for the most part. Only a small handful of institutions properly educate their students, the rest are just concerned w/boosting their enrollment #s and cashing in. Most of the subjects (not all) they teach u can learn on ur own better & faster
@HollywoodSheen I mostly agree. The system is problematic. And yes, if you're motivated and intelligent, you can be more efficient on your own. I had a friend who taught himself Calculus in 9th grade using his sister's college textbooks. And many tech entrepreneurs are self-taught and/or college dropouts. But if you want to be a well-rounded educated person. college is a must -- even if many of the required classes are useless. And it may be unfair, but employers do look for that degree.
My dad graduated Purdue.
